We could have been spending the last 19 years designing more and more efficient systems, but instead we've had to put all that effort into doing things more and more privately and in a decentralized way. Every time new technology was developed that did not treat the RIAA like a giant threat, they destroyed it. This is the consequence.

Tribler has done something similar for a while.

It has onion routing for anonymity and keeps score of how much data transfer you contribute with a blockchain.

For many people it is not worth the hassle compared to the alternatives such as paying a few dollars for freeleech on a private torrent site where there are lots of people with seedboxes trying to keep their ratio up and it is very rare for users to get DMCA notices. Or even paying for binary usenet.

I'm not convinced that the overhead of a blockchain is worth it for filesharing, things like I2P anonymous torrents, where nobody gets a DMCA complaint, work fairly well with it.

All the more reason to get this content via tribler.

Naked bittorrent is very trackable. Tribler on the other hand...is a step or two away from that.

Tribler has had a blockchain integrating anonymous bittorrent downloading for quite awhile now. Shame you can only really get it working via microsoft github.

...I actually do torrent linux distros... occasionally virtual machine images.
And I haven't downloaded any movies/music over bit torrent for years now. Most of the time you can find them via http stream or download.

Netflix Hulu Amazon prime if all else fails search video linking sites for a stream be sure to have enough script blockers to keep the malaware away. Don't feel secure doing that use tor as well it will be slower but even less likely to be caught. want it to watch later use a video downloader (or just hard link to the file in your temp directory on nix systems (haven't tried windows) )

If you really must torrent though try using something like tribler and set to use anonymous download(it is a beta feature but probably better than nothing like vanilla bit torrent).

I do wish though that the pirates would all move to something like freenet or i2p or tribler. decentralized anonymous and censorship resistant they would be the perfect tools but no many don't even offer magnet links.

Basically, set up two VMs, the first only gets networking through the second, and the second is configured to run everything through TOR and TOR alone.

Now this has been made easy and "done for us" so to speak (but always, ymmv, everything has bugs, security is a mindset, etc etc etc):

Improved methods of accessing some centralized torrent database (even if one of many)... bleh.

Better is to take the centralized anything out of the equation. Let peers search among each other what's out there. @ That point all you need is a small list of peers to start with, and you're good to go.

If I'm correct that is what Tribler is meant to achieve (plz... can someone get it into Debian repositories! :-). But I'm sure more research & software projects will move in that direction.

Why would you create many centralized points if you can create a decentralized system ?

Yes, there's technical solutions like the upcoming Tor-like anonymized version of tribler that will try to route around the Copyright Crooks-induced Internet Censorship.

Without delving into the Tribble source I would guess the other reply below is correct that a hosts.txt lists some long-lived peers in the network to bootstrap the search from.

Yes, there are 8 superpeers that do the bootstraping.

Well, using a system like Tribler it should be possible to realise a youtube without hosting it, but for something like that even a website wouldn't be needed anymore.

Perhaps it'll be a site where people can upload there torrent files with a description and thumbnail so others can view?
