What we hate is a list that someone else runs, wont reveal, and expects us to use. I want the freedom to turn off my own channels. I don't need someone else to do it for me.

Imagine this:
What if everyone had the ability to create and maintain their own censorware list. What if we had the ability to let it reference other lists dynamicly? What if it was a common standard, like HTML, and supported by open source censorware? What could we do?
Well, let's consider the following commands: (HTML's <> have been changed to [] in order to make typing easier)

Reading these reviews, I can definitely agree with the technical flaws inherent in Mission to Mars. And it's true, the plot was no Pulitzer Prize winner. But it was a fun SF flick.

I've been going to science fiction films semi-religiously for a long time now. I especially like movies involving space travel or exploration in some way, since space is something that I'm fascinated with. I saw Wing Commander. Sure it was bad when you compare it to the games. But I never had a chance to play the games. So it was a fun movie for me.

Mission to Mars was also a fun movie. I have believed for a long time that space exploration is very important, especially exploring colonization options in our own solar system. So, it was nice to see a movie explore colonization of Mars - a very real prospect in 2020. Plus, the visual effects were stunning, despite the physics flaws.

I try not to over-analyze movies until my second viewing of them. The first time I see a movie, I want to enjoy it for what it is. Then I'll go rent it and tear it apart. Try it...you might like it.

My take is that Internet and similar communications technologies offer a lifeline to developing countries. Why? Technology is no substitute for political consciousness - but the brilliance of the net is it's ability to build that consciousness through interaction and communication that breaks down entrenched geographic, social and other barriers.

Opportunity : to leap-frog years of expensive development and install lowest cost equipment available to the vast majority of the population. Think - satellite TV access in India - lowest costs in the world, available to great majority of population.

Dangers : Another Channel to sell western products to developing worlds - another channel to enrol cheap labour while avoiding responsibilty.

Dominance of English. The dominance of english is definately slowing the uptake of the net in developing countries, and restricting it to the wealthy. Free Software (localisations of Linux) is fighting that (See Bytes for all (link below)

There are some very interesting organisations that readers may be interested in.

PanAsiaA group that has assisted in the development of the first ISPs in some 6 asian developing countries - they mainly work with civil society and people's organisations. They are now developing e-commerce applications.

Woah. I think you might be on to something here.

I'm not a crypto guru. I barely understand public key encryption as it is, but here goes:
What if an encryption scheme were devised where the plaintext is encrypted with two or more pivate keys (belonging to one person), plus the other key. The encrypted would decrypt to two or more different texts, depending which key is used.

So, I could encrypt "Meet me at midnight." and "Happy birthday, Ed." With two keys, into one block of encrypted text. Then, if I use my private key A, it returns "Meet me at midnight." and if I use my private key B, it returns "Happy birthday, Ed."

If we could somehow make the number of original plaintexts undetectable, could supply keys to those who demand them, where they would decrypt our code to get "Happy birthday, Ed." when the REAL secret was "Meet me at midnight."

I know I could've worded that better, but is this a possibility? Is it already being done? I know it's a little along the lines of Steganography, where the encrypted text is inserted into a piece of digital media, making it look less like an encrypted message.

Summary:
If we could encode, say, 4 strings into one crypto block, and have it return different unencrypted text for 4 different keys, while keeping the number of original strings undeterminable, the party decyphering the string would never know if they have ALL of they keys, thus they would never know if they have the data that the sending party doesn't want them to see.

But it looks gnarly. Pretty close, better in fact, than my Ultimate Gadget I made last year.

Javascript is useful for lots of stuff. Like check out the link in the middle of this page. You don't even have to click through, yet it will take you to the next page. Think of the ramifications for ad forwarding. Oh wait, that was (d). You're right; javascript is useless.

If you're running Windows (which I wouldn't recommend), then you can run Proxomitron which is a stupidly named yet sublimely wonderful non-caching proxy server (like the Junkbusters one) that you can run on your own client side which will let you strip out all the annoying javascript crap you hate (in addition to filtering out ad banners). You'd actually be able to go to Geocities websites without that stupid branded logo in the corner, that is, if there is anything at Geocities worth seeing. The friend whose computer I set it up on has had only good things to say about it.

This sounds a lot to me a lot like an ad. Especially a banner for a health site, or some such thing. This hit me because a search on AOL's front page for 'Chocolate Chip Cookies' returned this for the 20th result. When I visited, the ad that was up at the time (a close-up of a guy's abs) pointed to eHow.com, touting an article on abs. It's a long way to go to make the point, but you know what I'm saying. Just a thought.

This is my theory and my question.

Mr. Katz is an entity that keeps on writing relativly low tech stories to a bunch of people who arnt mainly interested in these stories, over time they got real frustrated and kept bringing their vengence upon him.

But, he didnt change his style, he just kept on writing in the same tone in the same form. He didnt even try to adjust to the form needed neither did he just give up... Which leads to the assertion that.. Katz might be an AI entity (maybe piped off from Everything ) with a little bit of hacked Mega Hal code.

Thus my question is. Katz, are you human?

I still can't believe there's so much hype and hooplah surrounding the mp3 audio format. I'm surprised that the RIAA isn't more worried about lossless compression formats. You'd think that formats with no generational sound quality loss, or any loss of information for that matter, would really get some panties in a bunch.

Mark this offtopic if you want, but here's some info I've never seen on Slashdot about a lossless compression format called Shorten.

SoftSound, the developer of the format, sells a Windows encoder/decoder. There are also FREE versions available for Windows, Linux, and Mac. The HOWTO for the format is located here. There's also a great guide located here. Shorten for Mac and Linux is over here.

Anyone interested in the lossless compression of audio should definately give this a look-see.

Regarding the letter to the Family Research Council--I honestly wish you the best of luck there.

I also think you will probably have better luck having an in-depth conversation on the merits of Red Hat versus Slackware with the walls of your home than convince the Family Research Council of the fact the software is flawed and even blocks partisan material.

This is largely because the Family Research Council would consider this a feature and not a bug. :P

For those who aren't aware--the Family Research Council is, essentially, the lobbying arm of a group called Focus on the Family. FoF is probably the largest Religious Reich organisation in the US now (yes, even bigger than the Christian Coalition) and basically split off Family Research Council some years back in order to preserve their tax-exempt status. (As an aside, often state FoF branches will operate under different names to hide their affiliation with FoF.)

To be perfectly blunt, FoF and its affiliates have an agenda--to basically get as many raving fundamentalists in office as possible and to get the fundamentalist vote out, in hopes of getting enough people in office to essentially turn the United States into a fundamentalist theocracy. If you want to get a good idea about the "face" politics they support, just look at the political platform of (recently dropped out) presidential candidate Gary Bauer--this is the guy who founded Family Research Council when it was split off of FoF.

To these folks, pushing censorware is just another way of them "saving" us--whether or not we particularly want to be "saved" or not--and making the US into a "nice Christian nation again". (Many of these folks, by the way, also subscribe to "Christian Reconstructionism"--that is, the canard that the Founding Fathers actually meant the US to be a theocracy.) This is also why they tend to run "stealth" candidates (candidates who do not reveal their links to Religious Reich groups until elected) specifically to things like school boards--they want to get them young so they can indoctrinate them young, because they know that if they're gotten young they likely won't walk away. (This is also why they push homeschooling a lot, by the way, as well as vouchers for private schools--it's been the actual stated goal of many Religious Reich groups to get the school system totally dismantled so that kids are forced to go to sectarian schools.)

FoF's president, Bob Dobson, also makes a rather lucrative career selling books on "disciplining your kids"--usually involving a mix of censorship, forcing God down their throats, and liberal amounts of spanking the kids (part of the reason corporal punishment is NOT illegal in the US--or, for that matter, why the US is the only nation besides Somalia which has still not ratified the Convention on the Rights of the Child--is because fundamentalist groups like FRC lobby heavily against such laws, claiming that it'll take away their right to "spare the rod and spoil the child" or to "raise their kids as they see fit". In some cases where it has crossed the line into child abuse, some fundies have even argued in court that the state prohibiting them from beating the living hell out of their kids is a violation of their First Amendment rights to religion and that beating the hell out of their kids is actually a duty of their religion).

I happen to be a walkaway from what may be described as a "bible-based cult", and I can say that a fair percentage of the harder-core membership of many (if not most) Religious Reich groups in the US happen to be from churches that use coercive tactics on their membership. In other words, the ones who are doing the lobbying are more than likely brainwashed, they have probably already mentally defined anyone who isn't on their side and who dares to tell them about "flaws" in the software is directly in league with Satan (most Religious Reich groups, and most bible-based cults, DO have a very "us-versus-them" attitude--many Bible-based cults even go to the point of "deliverance ministry" (even your doubts are caused by demons, and the only cure is to "pray them out" or get an exorcism...rather like some of the nastier mind-control techniques in Scientology, actually)...). It is going to take a considerably larger clue-by-four than that to make them change their minds.

The FRC has a rather long record of lobbying not just for censorship, but for the entire Religious Reich platform. On occasion, this has even gone to slandering folks who speak against them...don't be surprised if you find possibly much of the town turned against you (I've read in previous reports that the town in general is quite conservative and beholden to the Religious Reich).

Ah, but your initial argument was the chance that an "exploiter" would exploit the "big, happy, family", not that two groups would attempt to exploit each other. That is a different case altogether. And besides, even within a group that wouldn't be considered diverse, people will still find ways to divide themselves into subgroups based on, for example, religious beliefs, political viewpoints, etc. Even Nazi Germany's concept of "Volk" only excluded people based on their heritage (yet they still purged German Communists).

Besides, I don't believe in dividing exploitation along "group" boundaries. Exploitation is exploitation regardless of the color of skin, religious beliefs, etc. of the person responsible for it.

Since more people, per capita were taken out by the Trotsky/Lennin/Stalin purges than were taken out of the nations participating in WW II, it is certainly reasonable to declare the Soviet Empire more destructive than Nazi Germany.

If the Nazi party were in power as long as the Soviets, I can guarantee you they would have purged more people per capita (ie. if they had stuck to ethnic cleansing instead of invading their neighbors, thus drawing the attention of the world).

You seem fairly preoccupied with how destructive the Soviet government was, but have you ever investigated the destruction the U.S government/multinational corporations are responsible for? To use examples from South America (an area of the world that doesn't seem to fall under the radar scope of the American media):

The involvement of the American government in the overthrow of democratically elected Brazilian president Salvador Allende, whose government was in turn replaced by the brutal dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet. A list of Pinochet's crimes can be found here. Documentation of the connection between the CIA and DINA (the Chilean secret police -- responsible for carrying out Pinochet's brutality) can be found here. There are literally hundreds of references on this...

The United States involvement (CIA, AID, MILGP) in the creation of military, police, and paramilitary agencies, which in turn were responsible for the torture and death of hundreds of thousands of people in El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Brazil, Chile (as mentioned above), and Bolivia. You can find large lists of MILGP (U.S. Military Group) officers still to this day in these and other countries.

I don't condone destruction of human life caused by anyone, but it is wrong to only selectively look at the sources of it.

DeCSS

It is uncompiled source code. I'm not sure whether they'll be errors if I try to compile it under one particular OS, however, it doesn't matter if there are. It can be used with modifications to generate an executable under any OS which has a C++ compiler.

We all really do know why DeCSS was made, to defeat the playback encryption on DVDs so they can be watched under the OS of choice. Oh, and the DVD CCAs trade secret is gone, it's now "common knowledge."

I've gotta put in a plug for a filter that I'm fond of: The Proxomitron. It is Win32 only (unfortunately; if you use a different platform, Junkbusters is probably the way to go), is much more user-friendly than JunkBusters, and probably just about as configurable. Since it is a proxying filter, it works with all browsers. Hey, it's even skinnable. :)

When I woke up this morning I thought that it would be a good news day, with Kevin being released from prison. But when I went to the 2600 site for an update and saw the first injunction I became depressed.

And now the other shoe drops. It seems to me that today we all get to experience a small amount of the insanity that Kevin has lived through every day for the last five years. We are on the verge of watching a decision made for us by a small group of people who lack the ability to understand the technology involved in the question, much less the ramifications of the final decision.

Hopefully our friends at the EFF can succeed in pulling us through this, by explaining this to a level that even the judges can understand [not a job that I envy]. In the mean time I would like to show my support by leaving up my mirror site.

What qualifies as a groups is very interesting to me. I've long been tempted to set up a pirate radio station playing a mix of music (mostly goth, electronica, industrial, and trance) and commentary...maybe even drama or readings. Now, I've gotten input from a mailing list of local people (most of us work within about 15 - 20 mile radius and the rest aren't much further out). I wonder if we would qualify as a community group.

On a related note, I wonder if this will be increased or decreased pressure on pirate FM stations. Most have a short radius and some are quite good. An excellent example is the Anime Music Network .

Temporary restraining order DENIED!

Thanks to the efforts of the Electronic Frontier Foundation and the organization and support provided by a few of our fellow defendants we are still here! Another hearing is scheduled for January 14th.

We would like to point out to all of the mirror sites with things like "fuck the lawyers" on them that it is because of a generous group of lawyers that we are still here. These lawyers are working for free (or much less than they could get by going over to the Dark Side) and don't deserve this kind of abuse.

We have just been informed that the DVD Copy Control Association is seeking a restraining order against us (named as "Doe 28") for distributing DeCSS and linking to pages that distribute it and linking to pages that link to pages that distribute it.

Section 48 of this request states that we supposedly "have received notice through the MPA and refused to remove the information at issue". This is absolutely false! We have never received any such request (from the MPA or anybody else for that matter) and we obviously were not given the opportunity to refuse! Either Jared Bobrow needs to go back to law school or the DVD CCA needs to get a new firm. This is the kind of sloppy work that could get an important document thrown out.

Explanation on legality of this information

The software (source as well as binaries) offered on this site can be freely redistributed because it was published under the GNU General Public License. The purpose of this software is not illegal copying of DVD disks. It is meant to provide information necessary to be able to program a DVD player for Linux. To do this, the CSS system needs to be incorporated in the player. Recently the (very weak) DVD content scrambling system was deciphered, freeing the way for a Linux DVD player. The CSS system is not a copy protection system, since it does not prevent copying of the disk. Writing information about the way an encryption scheme functions is completely legal. The source code and binaries on this site are completely legal too, since they contain no code from the DVD consortium or its members. The sources and programs on this site were written by third parties using clean-room reverse engineering methods which are (ready?) completly legal.

Attention www.rhythm.cx was hosting a list of mirrors for these files. That list of mirrors has been replaced with a page reading "This site has been taken down for legal reasons." Here's what the maintainer put on the site the day it was shut down:

NOTE (Thu, Nov 11, 12:17pm EST): I've recently been informed that a law firm which is likely to be one that would try get these mirrors taken down has been visiting this mirror site as well as others. With that said, there is a possibility that I may have to remove this site in the near future because like everyone else, I can't afford to go to court to fight it. Luckly, it seems fairly unlikely that any law firm will ever be able to get rid of all these mirrors at this point (there are currently 41 in 8 different countries and this list is growing every day). However, I have only seen very few mirror _lists_ like this one anyplace. If anyone has the resources, it might be wise to mirror this list of mirrors as well so that the right people will still know that these mirrors exist.
