Best Selling and some Linux StatsWell, speaking for ourselves, Tux Games found that the best-selling available game for the month to date for Linux is Descent 3 and its Mission Pack. Jagged Alliance II was the best-selling pre-release game (which unfortunately wont quite make it for the christmas delivery deadline).
We wont reveal exact stats on order levels, but we can say that the majority of purchasers were male, but that the US for the first month since we started trading, comprised less than 50% of our orders. North America was responsible for 52% of our sales, Europe 40%, while the rest lagged well behind with Asia at 3%, Australia 2%, South America 2% and Africa 1% (rounded figures).
The rush is starting to die down now, with people realising that games will now be unlikely to arrive befrore the 25th.

Tux Games will provide out-of-the-box Q3TATux Games will be providing an out-of-the-box Linux version of Quake III Arena. We will be including a Linux installer CD in the box for every copy of the Windows version we sell. Every sale we get, we will report as a Linux sale, to id, in an attempt to show a viable Linux market.
If you wish to show Linux support, either make the purchase from us, or when you buy it, email to quake3@tuxgames.com and tell us that you bought it at a store elsewhere specifically to play it under Linux. We will forward our collected figures to id.
Unfortunately, however, id software have denied us permission to put their Linux binaries on the CD we will include, so we will instead be including an installer that will download the latest correct Linux binaries from the ID site during your installation. This will lead to a fairly slow installation, but is the best we can do to create an out-of-the-box linux game version.

Community Question
At Tux Games we have been debating if we should stock the Indrema and its games. Whilst we are a Linux based games company, the Inderma is a Linux based console for gamers.
What opinions do people have? Should we stock this for completeness of range and support for the community, or would would people prefer we remain purely a company selling games to use on basic mainstream Linux systems? If you have an opinion please drop an email to comments@tuxgames.com -

Linux Port
At Tux Games we had some conversations with people at lionhead. We have been told that there WILL be a Linux port of the game.
This is not just rumour. -
If you want a native version for Linux...
You may want to sign the Tuxg ames petition for the game. There are currently over 2200 signatures for Diablo 2, but the more there are the more chance there could be to convince someone up top at Blizzard to port it.

Linux Games ARE profitableSpeaking as someone that knows. Tux Games has been profitable since its third month of business. In the last 3 months we have seen Linux games sales double. We expect to see them double again in another 3 months.
Obviously a lot of that s due to the word of Tux Games getting out there. A lot of it, however, is the growing Linux gaming market. Some games are not selling very well at all. Card Games and Casino Games are selling very poorly, but Space Games and Strategy Games are selling very well.
All in all, Linux gaming is fairly small, but it IS growing, as long as you appeal to the right people, which is true for any market.

Theocracy for Linux
It is interesting how Slashdot started reporting games that run only on Windows and is ignoring other games. For example, Theocracy for Linux is available for sale from the www.tuxgames.com but I've never seen a post about it on Slashdot.

Re:Bioware is smartAs an anti-social, misanthropic loner, I prefer single player games. I can point you to some good ones.
I'm pretty sure that most Looking Glass studios games are heavily single player (like Thief and System Shock II). There was a rant about the whole multiplayer thing in Next Generation online before it got destroyed and absorbed by the vapid Daily Radar.
Anyway, check into the Looking Glass games, they are attractive and deep (and even though SS2 has a multiplayer mode, it is cooperative... what a concept!).
I've read about success using these with Wine, but I haven't seen it myself. I also signed a petition to get SS2 ported to Linux at Tux Games.
I find Heroes of Might and Magic III to be fun to play single player, too, and it's a native Linux app.

Heavy Gear II available to buy from Tux GamesTux Games is selling Heavy Gear 2 for, as far as we have found, the lowest price. We charge $37 INCLUDING shipping anywhere in the world. This compares to $38 to buy from Loki if you are in the USA, or $46 elsewhere in the world.
If you find a lower price, let us know!

Question 8Just to confirm - Tux Games will not sell an item as a pre-release item unless it is a guarenteed release.
The games we have as pre-release are all definitely on the way

This raises a question about emulationThis does raise a question that Tux Games has been debating for a while now.
Do people think that a company that JUST sells Linux Games should also sell games known to work under emulation, such as WINE, or this virtual playstation?
Sure, we would make more money, but does this hurt the cause of Linux as a gaming platform in itsown right?
We are leaning on the side of 'yes, it hurts the cause and so we will not stock these games', but what do others think?

Linux Game Petition is here ....
While us game developers would love to port our games to Linux, until Management can justify the price of porting versus the number of sales, we're stuck in a Windows world.

It is strange to see you write about the Games on Linux, after ignoring all our requests to post the shadowbane petition. -

Dont rush to download
As of Monday, Tux Games will be offering a CD with all of the Loki demos on it. This will be sold at break-even price (about $7 shipped anywhere in the world). If you are from a country that charges you for local calls, it would probably pay you to hold off on the download and pick up the CD on monday.

We will stock this game
Tux Games will stock this game as soon as it becomes available to us. We pledge to stock any commercial game for Linux that is not of low quality or priced to rip-off Linux users.

Tux Games will also carry these titlesTux Games will also carry these titles, and will be accepting pre orders as soon as prices are announced by Loki.
I invite you to compare Tux Games prices against anyone elses. They will be about the same. But then, Tux Games offers free shipping worldwide. In addition, if you wish to see more of your favorite games ported to Linux, please check out the Tux Games Petitions page, where we are trying to get enough signatures to show the game manufacturers that there really IS a Linux games market
