The Wright Brothers say they flyed three years before Santos Dumont, but they didn't asked for the prize of 50.000 Francs offered by the French Aeroclub. Santos Dumont received the two most important prizes offered by the Federation Aeronautique International with his 14-Bis flight. Just two years later (1908) the Wright Brothers released the photos of their "1903" flight.

Dumont's flight was not just watched by thousands, you can even watch the movie!

I knew this article seemed familiar . . . At the end of June, there was another article about a consumer in Brazil who sued for the same reason. And won. In contrast to this French case, the guy won about $340. Whether that is in addition to legal fees, I don't know. The original Brazilian article referenced is here.

Interestingly, the Brazilian CD which was defective (Tribalistas, featuring Marisa Monte, Arnaldo Antunes, and Carlinhos Brown) was not copy-protected in the US (I was worried after reading this article, but I bought a copy and had no problems reading it on my Mac).

What is the net reaction of a Hydrogen cluster, like H3+ or H9+(H2), with ozone.

Well, since there seems to be some frequent doubts about our voting system, I'll be wrapping up some of the responses from others. I'm Brazilian also, but I won't be voting on these elections.

(i) This is not a new system

This isn't the first time we're voting electronically. We've been doing this for some years now. It started only in the bigger voting places (like São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro), and (I can't remember exaclty when) has been extended to (almost) the whole country since the last (2 years ago,, mayors an senate) or second to last (4 years ago, president, governors and senate, just like this one) elections.

Not all votes are electronic. There are some remote places where I'm not sure if it's already electronic, and also votes from Brazilians that reside out of Brazil are still done using paper ballots (AFAIK) and, thus, counted manually. Those are generally the cause the we do not have the final result until the next day (or 2, sometimes), until all the votes arrive from other countries.

If you want to see what it looks like just go to this site and click on the title (light blue, "Teste seu voto online com candidatos fictícios"). It's a Java applet that looks like the voting device. It's slow as hell, but you can get an idea.

(ii) There is a paper backup system

When you vote, your vote is stored in the memory of the voting device, and also printed and stored in a bag attached to the device. In case there are doubts regarding the device, or if it fails in some way, then votes are counted by hand. But, primarily, all votes are counted electronically.

(iii) Voting is mandatory

Yeah, we are obligated to vote. If we do not vote, we have to say why we didn't. If we still do not say why, we lose many civil rights (as has been already pointed out: we cannot get a job - at least not in public services, etc, etc).

If someone does not live in Brazil (like myself) we have two options: vote in a local Brazilian government building (consulate, embassy, etc) or, when back to Brazil, fill some official forms and show proof that you were not in Brazil during the elections. I'm in the second group, since there are no government agencies that I know of around here in Texas. "Foreigners" are only allowed to vote for president (and not for other local authorities).

Well, I think that's pretty much all for now.

Being Brazilian, I'd like to express my opinion.

Here in Brazil there is a very bad wealth distribution. By pure coincidence, I have recent figures, as a major Brazilian magazine published this week an article regarding the rich guys. It's consent here that one of the major problems is the wealth distribution.

Those who have an annual income of R$ 7.716 (US$ 4.000) are among the 10% richest Brazilians. Those who earn more than R$ 26.400 (US$ 13894) are the 1% richest, and their incoming is greater than the total incoming of the 50% poorest.

Of course, this includes poor rural areas. Big cities, like Sao Paulo, are quite like NYC. Money is mostly concentrated in the capitals (Sao Paulo, Rio, Brasilia, Belo Horizonte, etc). In these big cities, like in Sao Paulo, that's where I live, we have some places with a standard of life similar to more developed countries. Yes, we have ADSL, cable modem, Mc Donald's, HBO, WB TV, and most stuff americans have. There are like 10 million Brazilians w/ Internet access (not sure about this number.).

This said, we can add that there are lots of illiterates and people who can't have access to the Internet.

And let's face it. Most people will simply use it for on-line chatting. Few people will do something useful with it, let alone profit from it. I guess only those with more culture will actually research or do something productive. But if they have some culture, they most probably are not in the 50% poorest group.

This way, the net can cause even more social distortion. This can be bad. On the other way, the net can really bring new opportunities to people who wouldn't have conditions for such.

Knowing how to access the net will soon be one of the pre-requisites of many jobs. Knowing how to use a computer already is. This will make the computer illiterates socially excluded.

So, in my opinion, it'll contribute for some of the poorest people to become even poorer, but will give many new opportunities. It's not necessarily bad or good. It's a change. People call it progress.
