Re:Sim City Stats
I am currently relocating to a new area as well, and actually tried to get crime stats on potential areas I'd be living in (thinking they may have already achieved that ability), they haven't got them yet, but I hope my wish list is not too far away.
If you're moving to the UK, then go take a look at these guys, who have bought CACI's ACORN geodemographic dataset, and combined with publically available datasets on education, crime etc, to produce a view on what that area is like.
Example (where I used to live)
Other than that, you're calling 1-800-CACI and asking for their geodemographic solutions.

Re:Dude, I got marched out of an interview once
I interviewed for the job, and the guy describe something I'd done very successfully on my previous project. I was perfect for the job, and the interview was going well from his point of view, but not from mine. The company was in a crap location, out on a dumpy industrial estate, and I'd done that work before, exactly that work, it was something boring and repetitive to me.
Then, why did you apply for the job in the first place? You could have at least arranged for a telephone
interview to establish what skills the company were looking for. That would have saved everybody some
time. And you also could have used Google-maps or UpMyStreet to check where the company and the nearest tube stations were located.
Of course, there is now the occupational hazard that if you are deemed "a bright graduate", company directors will just say whatever you want to hear in order to get you into the building, then attempt to denegrate your skills and attempt to browbeat you in order to get you to accept a dead-end position.
There is definitely nothing more infuriating than going down to an interview for a company you are told
is "desperately seeking experienced senior software developers..." only to find out that they are actually "desperately seeking experienced senior software developers wanting to move into full-time management...".
Well, duh, if someone can make more money as a contractor and/or the director of their own company, they're not going to want to become a middle manager. -
Re:Staring
I dont know, I live in London and have such a large local area that most of the time I dont know what is where. The Internet has helped out a lot, from casual browsing of online mapping services to see what is just outside the immediate area, to sites like up my street which lets me find any businesses near me. I have learned a lot more about my area from the Internet than I have by just going out and exploring (which I do fairly often as well).

Re:More New Labour thuggery from the Home Office
I couldn't agree more with the parent. Trying not to sound like a Daily Mail reader, but use this and email your MP, they are the buffer between you and the Home Office. Only send it once though or the'll be round for your laptop.....

Re:We live controlled lives, you know...
In a little bit of retrospective research, I'd like to point this area profile out to you.

Property TaxAre people forced to move from their homes due to astronomical property taxes where you are?
Yup, pensioners are - the council tax in many areas of the UK is quite high e.g. a band D house in croydon (68001...88000 pounds - 1 bedroom flat in poor location) would be 1086.47 per year. In a slightly better location a flat in the suburbs (128000 pounds=$223,000) costs 1569.34 in tax per year ($2,734.52 USD)
How much is the property tax in US suburbs?
Of course I find it odd when fully detached houses in e.g. south central los angeles are described as "slums". Such houses cost over $500,000 in croydon.

Re:not all good
I second this.
They do reply, too. I got a personal response from one of my MEPs to an email within half an hour. Not all of them are this clued-up (I'm sure not all of them even have e-mail addresses), but some of them will be.
But you don't have to email them - you can write to them, too.
If you don't know who your MEPs are, or how to contact them, go here and enter your postcode. Look for the "Your Representives" section, and click on the "More information and contact details" link. -
EU Software patents.I second this.
Brits can find out who your MEP is by entering your postcode here. Set aside any personal feeling you may have on the EU, ranting against it is more like to do harm than good.
Some ideas point to raise.
Point out you are a IT professional and you are writing in that capacity as well as a voter.
US companies have been allowed to accumulate large number of software patents for 30 years by a poorly managed US patent system.
European Companies will be forced to pay royalties to US corporations, even ideas they invented, but patented in the US.
European Companies can be prevented from competing in some areas by patents, either by cost or denial of access to certain technology.
Patents prevents fair competition and promote monopolies.
An expansion of the patents system in the EU to cover computer software is extremely damaging to the European IT sector.
Point out that software is about maths and numbers, if you cannot patent algebra B or numbers so why software.
If possible point out a simple example of a patent in your particular field, even better if you can rightly claim it was invented in Europe but patented in the US.

UpMyStreet ConversationsHere. Enter a UK postcode and you can join in coversations with people in your locality.
Sadly, NTK report that they're in receivership.

for the UK...
up my street has something called "conversations" which are basically forums based on your postcode (aka zipcode).
However I'm not too sure how profitable it is..they're for salefor money reasons... -
