Re:Global Higgsing
The US is quite involved in LHC:

And the collider that did most of this work before LHC was the Tevatron, just outside of Chicago.

Re:Why become a scientist?
It's not like that everywhere and it's too bad that's the way North America has gone with recognition. I've heard (anecdotally) that Nobel Prize winners ( except perhaps for Peace) get rock star treatment in most Asian countries.
At U.C. Berkeley, a Nobel gets you a reserved parking space.

Re:Is this indicative of something?
The US is not involved in the LHC, at least not directly.
You might want to read a bit on this page:
The US is involved with more than half a Billion US Dollars and more than a thousand (thousands?) of scientists and engineers. I think more than a quarter of the 2200 members of the ATLAS collaboration (one of the larger experiments at LHC) are from US universities and institutions.

Re:More than scientific learning
(And we're all still alive too!)
Apologies for repeating myself from yesterday's LHC thread:
There will be no doomsday, nor Higgs until the first collisions occur in one to two months.
That's right, you still have time to see the Grand Canyon or have relations with sextuplets before the Earth is devoured by a Strangelet

Re:Not supposed to be dooms day yet.
Mod the above as +10 Informative since most news outlets completely missed this point in their coverage.
The *actual* doomsday will occur when the first collisions occur in one to two months.
Much cooler than a black hole would be Death By Strangelet

Re:Slashdot + page of high res photos
These pics are not particularly high-res. There are probably high-res versions of these same images available somewhere, but I couldn't find them. Here are some similar ones, though, suitable for printed pinups: http://www.uslhc.us/Images
