Texas Instrument 99/4A was my first computer. My father bought one so I could learn to use a computer except I learned to use it for games. I was into Atari 2600 games and arcades (e.g., Pac-Man).

Recently, I finally got TI99/4A to work in MESS emulator. The instructions can be found here in case anyone is interested. Some of those games still rule! :)

Hi. at UWM, we've run into the same problems. If you're not going to be running a domain, use the group policy editor (available on every Windows XP/2000 machine by default).

Start, Run, "gpedit.msc", and hit OK.

This will bring up the group policies for the local computer, which is similar to the domain GPOs. Except, of course, that they won't be over-written by the Domain GPOs because you won't have any.

Some have mentioned the dragon book (Aho, Ullman et all) and the tiger book (Appel's "Modern Compiler Implementation"). Both excellent references.

If you're at all mathematically minded, you should look into a good book on formal languages, such as Harrison's "Introduction to Formal Language Theory", or R. Nigel Horspool's "LR Parsing". (Caution: Don't buy these. Look for them in your local university library.)

Once you have the basics, you should look into the work of Mark Hopkins. The guy is a genius, and understands more of the theory of parsing than anyone I've ever seen, and has invented some techniques which far surpass the "state of the art" of lex and yacc.

I worked for the Omnifest Community Network in Milwaukee WI starting in 1993 and still maintain a rudimentary web site about it.

We offered dial-up service, email, interactive bulletin boards using CIX bulletin board software (developed by Tristate Online in Cincinnati OH) on a DEC workstation housed at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee. In the pilot stage it was only open to local high school teachers, librarians, and UW-Milwaukee alumni, then it was opened to elementary and secondary schools, then the public.

Because there weren't a lot of other ways for non-university people to get onto the internet, the services were much in demand and we had a loyal following. For instance, the text-based interface enabled visually impaired people with screen readers to participate and we had bulletin boards sponsored by the Badger Association for the Blind. Many volunteers moderated bulletin boards and posted community information as well as providing technical support for users. I helped train volunteers and provide phone support and will attest that there was a real spirit of community service.

Operating as a non-profit organization presented problems. In addition to the obvious difficulty getting financial support, I got the idea that a lot of people didn't trust us. While members usually appreciated the low charges, we would get many calls a day asking about the service then get a lecture about how that was no way to run a business! We were charging $25 a year with even lower pricing plans for students who registered through their schools as a deliberate choice to keep the service open to everyone in the community. Libraries and community centers made computers available so that it users didn't even have to own their own computers to participate. It just didn't seem that people could grasp the idea of an organization run by a community for the mutual benefit of the members of the community rather than for profit.

Well, the inevitable happened. Omnifest closed in 1998. I feel we contributed greatly to the popularization of using the Internet in our community only to be set aside when Internet access via the WWW became commercially viable. Much of the demise was due to technological advances too, for instance, the text-based interface worked well with 2400K modems readily available then.

I was about to write the extensive community sponsored by SEFLIN in Florida as an example of a community network which had successfully evolved into a web site, but that appears to be gone too. Sigh...

Do kids have privacy rights or not?

How long before Skyward or some other business, sells the information parents receive through this program? Kids habits and tastes are valuable to marketers, and plenty of schools eagerly seek out corporate funding. Will Skyward sell the information to businesses, or will schools cut out the middle-man and sell it themselves?

How many third parties will get a hold of the information when they aren't supposed to?

Can information collected on state property (schools) be held from the Government, if they demand access?

Currently, our system works like this:
All distance ed. classes have a homepage on our WebCT server. (Dual PIII Xeon, NT 4 - I think there's a *nix version of WebCT, but I'm not in charge of the server) Course web pages are maintained by student employees for professors who aren't that computer literate. The page gets the syllabus, list of projects, an assignment drop box, and a few discussion boards. Professors lecture to a digital camera about once a week. Those tapes are converted to .rm with RealProducer Plus(I have no idea if there's a *nix version) and uploaded to the course page. Every other week or so, each class holds a chat with live video streaming from the professors office (again RealProducer for video, WebCT chat client in Java). WebCT also has a whiteboard feature that can be used with the live chat, but no one has used it yet in my department. Assignments can be completed by either writing in a text box(like writing a /. comment) or uploading a file to the course drop box. Tests/quizzes are available in WebCT, and can have multiple choice, essay, or short answer questions. Professors can provide answers and have the tests/quizzes graded automatically(except for essays) or look at the answers and grade it themselves. Tests can be made available at any time, for as short a time period as an hour, to unlimited amount of time.

So far, this is the best system I've seen for distance ed. I've also worked on a system called Blackboard, which doesn't have as many features, but is slightly more userfriendly for designers (this system also ran on NT, not sure about hardware). I've also used, but never worked on, a system called Web Course in a Box (WCB). That system was older, uglier and most of the campus has stopped using it.

My computer science class (college sophomore level) is writing a mud as a class project. Not only is it fun, but it's amazing to see how simple the code is. The idea of the project was that the professor wrote a _very_ basic mud program. Groups of students were assigned to add features like food & energy, animals, combat, a save game feature, and several others. Some friends and I have plans to keep adding stuff over semester break (month_of_no_classes++). Anyway, just thought I'd show an example of muds used in teaching. Over the past week the Motion Picture Association of America has intensified its efforts to bully and harass individual Internet users by sending out a new series of email threats. Using little more than bluff and bluster they've also managed in recent weeks to shut down countless websites, convince employers to fire employees, and get schools to take disciplinary actions against students for doing little more than taking part in an act of solidarity on their private homepages.

John Young, who maintains the Cryptome, is one of the hundreds of John Doe defendants in the California DVD case. In addition to a copy of DeCSS, Young published a copy of the now-infamous Hoy Declaration, in which the DVD Copy Control Association inadvertently included a copy of the very information they were trying to suppress in public court filings. He was among the first to bear the brunt of a wave of cease and desist letters for posting the source code to DeCSS. The letter reads in part:

The Superior Court of Santa Clara County, California also recently granted a preliminary Injunction against the Internet posting of DeCSS.
If you are bound by an injunction, maintaining the DeCSS utility on your system or network violates the above injunction[s] and risks court sanctions for contempt.

Never mind the fact that the MPAA knows full well that Young, located in New York, is outside the jurisdiction of the California court, nor is he covered by the Southern District of New York's injunction. They neglect to quote the portion of the injunction that specifies just who is covered and who isn't.

Over the past week, we have received numerous reports of this threatening letter being sent to web site owners worldwide. It appears the MPAA is simply going down the list of mirrored sites and sending a letter to everybody.

Geography and national sovereignty are clearly foreign concepts to this multinational corporation. The effects of globalization seem to have impaired their faculties more than previously thought. They proceeded to send similar letters to people all over the world. Tom Vogt, also named as a defendant in the California case, resides in Germany. The letter the MPAA sent him insisting that he comply with the California injunction, refers to the preliminary draft of an unratified convention. That's right, the best they could do was threaten him with an unsigned treaty.

Earlier this month Grant Bayley received a cease and desist letter for hosting DeCSS on his webpage for the Australian 2600 meeting. Both Bayley and the server are located in Australia. As expressed in the meeting guidelines, 2600 meetings are organized on their own, anyone can start one, and they are pretty much autonomous. According to an Australian journalist who spoke with the chief counsel for the MPAA, 2600 Australia is being singled out simply because of its name. Presumably this is also why they chose to go after A.Sleep, operator of the Connecticut 2600 meeting's webpage in his very own federal lawsuit. One can only imagine what the MPAA must be thinking.

In an age where anyone is capable of exercising free speech to mass audiences via the Internet, there is a disturbing trend that this freedom is limited not by the strength of one's convictions nor one's access to technology. Rather it is dependant on the will and resources of one's Internet Service Provider. It is common for ISPs to cancel accounts or remove content at the first hints of any controversy. It didn't take long for big business to figure this out and they've been exploiting lawsuit-fearing ISPs ever since. One can hardly blame the average ISP for bowing to such impressive cease and desist letters. Often they're barely breaking even as it is, and nuking one $10 a month webpage is a simple business decision when being threatened with a million dollar lawsuit.

What's far more troubling is the ease in which traditional safe havens for free expression, like universities and other academic institutions, are willing to sell out their students. Zach Karpinski stands out as one such victim. A student at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Zach was summarily fired from his job of two and a half years at Student Technology Services, an organization he helped build. The letters he and his school received accusing him of using school servers for illegal activities were enough to trample this student's rights and reputation in favor of some perverse idea of political "damage control." They should be more concerned with controlling the damage done to their student's academic freedom and civil liberties than satisfying the whims of Jack Valenti and the MPAA. Sadly, Zach is not alone. A student from California State University at Fresno wrote in to report that he had to take down his school-hosted DeCSS mirror and that the MPAA requested that he be fired from his school employment. (Fortunately, he wasn't fired).

We first took a stand in the DVD battle back in November, when the first cease and desist letters were being sent out. We joined in the mirroring campaign to lend our support to those who had been subjected to hollow threats and harassment from the DVD industry, but were forced into compliance due to circumstances beyond their control. They knew they were right, they knew they could win, but they lacked the resources to stand up for their convictions. As evidenced above, that fight is ongoing. Our modest mirror list has grown substantially and continues to grow, despite mirrors being removed from time to time. The success of the DeCSS mirroring campaign demonstrates the futility of attempts to suppress free speech on the Internet. It is distributed hosting at its most basic and a proven defense from censorship. Make no mistake, DeCSS is out there, it can never be eradicated. Not only will DeCSS be preserved regardless of whether there are any mirrors, the tyrannical actions of the MPAA have ensured that it will live on forever in history, law books, and all the communities it has effected.

I have a fairly simple machine, PII 333 with two 4gig harddrives. I have it dual booted with Linux (Redhat 6.0) and NT 4.0 with LILO being the bootloader.

Here's the interesting part: when I boot under NT I can use VMWare to get at the raw Linux partition, and when I boot under Linux I can use VMWare to get to the raw NT partition. Each OS has a specific configuration depending on whether it's a guest or host (using Hardware Profiles under NT and VMWare's dualconf under Linux).

Then it starts getting complex with host-only networking under VMWare for each environment. I actually have 5 different IPs for my one machine:

192.168.0.2: Native (host) NT or native Linux
192.168.101.1: VMNet Bridge
192.168.101.2: NT host/Linux host
192.168.101.3: Linux guest
192.168.101.4: NT guest

So while I have NT as a host, I can use samba to send files to Linux and then test them out. As far as development goes on NT, I have Visual Studio 6.0, Borland's free compiler, and Cygnus's cygwin (with mingw32 built under cygwin). I also have cross tools under cygwin that target Linux and MSDOS (djgpp).

When I use Linux as a host (99.5% of the time), again I can use samba to send executables to the NT guest and try them out *immediately* after compilation. This is a plus for libraries such as SDL, etc. I use pgcc-2.95.2 targetted to mingw32, cygwin (for the hell of it), ms-dos, and Sony PlayStation.

The main reason I use this setup is for hardware/processor feasibility, I have a TNT2 Ultra that isn't supported in any way under VMWare, therefore booting NT means I get 3DSMax, etc. that takes full advantatge of my hardware. Also, I have an ISA card that talks to my PlayStation, and the majority of dev-tools (with the major exception of psxdev) for the PSX are Win32 only (VMWare can't handle non-standard hardware).

How I set this up:

Install NT on the second harddrive

Configure all drivers, etc. for NT (might want to wait for this step to make creating Hardware Profiles easier)

Install Linux on the first harddrive w/ LILO

Setup VMWare on Linux to talk to NT as a guest (using raw disk partitions)

Boot *NATIVELY* into NT and copy your existing profile into a new Hardware Profile (System Control Panel)

Disable any devices in your new profile (call it "Virtual Machine") that VMWare doesn't support (Devices Control Panel)

At this point if you want you can setup VMWare for NT to access Linux as a raw partition

Boot into Linux and test your NT under VMWare, if some drivers fail, disable them under the Devices Control Panel

If you installed VMWare for NT, tweak your Linux dualconf configuration (I had to manually add a condition for switching the links to the X server)

Setup Host-only networking, samba, etc.

I know I didn't go into any detail, I don't have the time to write everything out and I'm not at my machine so I might have missed something. I'll post a couple articles at my site, etc. when I have some time (this weekend?).
