Examined movies?
The researchers examined 285 movies from P2P networks and used the quality of the file to determine whether it was some guy with a video camera or not.
Why? They could just have checked VCDQuality and saved alot of time/bandwidth. -
Re:Uh, the video IS out. ;-)
The quality is shit.

metal detectors and night-vision goggles?!
Hrm, a lot of good that did considering Finding Nemo was available YESTERDAY, a day before the opening. True the ending is cut off, but it's still out there. They don't seem to get that a number of these pre-releases and the really good ones are made by people who work at the movie theater, not people that sneek in. The holy grail for these is a Telesync which uses audio from the RCA jack on the projector instead of a microphone.
-
Re:These people are idiots.
THis article talks about a high quality rip of Matrix Reloaded. That sure as hell didn't come from a theater-goer with a sony..
Actually, it did. The group Centropy has been releasing incredibly high quality Telesync SVCD copies of films for a few months (Centropy has been around for years, but only started the beautiful TS copies recently.)
They have obviously mounted a camera way up in the rafters (the angle is close to perfect) and have some talented post production people making TS copies look like Screeners.
I never would watch any cammed movie till these guys started putting out these awesome SVCDs. Now, in my DVD player connected to a big projection screen, it is not unlike the DVD experience. -
Movie Already On the Internet
Finding Nemo is already available via the internet through a crappy cam recording released by WAREZ group FTF.

Re:Does Anyone Really Want a Crappy Bootleg?
it's still a telesync, just a VERY GOOD one (and svcd, divx/xvid or even dvd-r (yep, matrix was the first maybe...) are used in stead of the crappy vcd format that is usual for telesyncs...)

Re:DestinyShmuck... you lie. The screeners are fake.
I'll be reported first here when it is finally leeched.
Heck, it would probably be a freaking slashdot story.
Stop the rumors...

Re:This just in...
Just because the MPAA dosnt release it until it would make them the most money does not mean the dvds don't exist.
The.Lord.Of.The.Rings.The.Two.Towers.2DVDR-REiGN released on 2003-01-11 17:34:30 -
Re:Lies
Those are fakes. There's been no release that I've seen, and the places I see are the ones responsobile for supplying channels on IRC networks.
One easy way to check on these pirated releases is through VCDQuality. They post the NFOs (text documents containing information on the group who released the movie) and JPEG samples of the releases. It's very rare that any decent release of a movie doesn't get posted to the site (usually within 2-60 minutes of the initial upload/release/spread of the movie). With something as huge as The Two Towers, if it were released, you'd better believe the group who brings it to the community first will want to be known for it. -
Re:just a camI'll add to that for the uninformed around here, if you don't mind.
- The resolution is 352x240 letterboxed. Meaning there is a black border top and bottom.
- The quality isn't that bad.
- People don't watch them on 15 inch monitors with 2 inch speakers. They burn them as VCDs to play on DVD players, as the pirates intended.
-
Re:And the Quality?
Errr. It seems they have anti-leeching on their images. Try this.

And the Quality?
Over at VCDQuality there are screencaps up. A little too bright, but not bad. The quality seems to be improving since I've last seen a VCD Release.
The VCD Community is growing larger and larger everyday. It's common now at school to watch in-theatre movies on "Movie Days" because students bring the DVD's to school. (I've witnessed around 10 kids huddled around a PC in amazement on how some "l33t schoolmate" obtained the movie)
Though, a problem with the VCD Community is they release over IRC. They should do it over Gnutella2, eDonkey or another good P2P Network where each downloader also uploads to other users using Partial File Sharing. Releases can get out waaay faster on P2P than IRC. -

No big deal...does piracy hurt film anyway?
The release of Harry Potter is a crappy cam, and won't affect Theatrical revenue. It's almost unwatchable.
The bigger question is, does film piracy affect revenue at all? A film is not like music: Nevermind and Sticky Fingers will be just as valuable to me in ten years, and I'll listen to them a lot as a soundtrack to whatever else I'm doing. A film takes 100% of my concentration, (well most of it anyway) and you can't watch a film while you do something else..so film and music piracy are vastly different things.
Let's look at a few examples: In the Theatrical Window, Spiderman both broke box office and piracy records, hitting tens of thousands of copies a day at its peak.
In the Home Video window, the Spiderman DVD was released on pirate channels more than a month early and yet it still is going to break all sales records. 28 MILLION in preorders, which blows away anything before it.
The exact same thing happened with Shrek last year..most pirated film - most pirated DVD - best selling DVD.
While it would be difficult to quantify, it's possible that piracy acts simply as promotion when it comes to film: it certainly didn't cause the films above to fail on any scale, and probably won't affect Harry Potter either.
The million dollar question: could the use of piracy channels as a promotional venue actually increase film revenue?
Everyone assumes Valenti and Rosen are right: that piracy is damaging the film and music businesses. But Valenti was dead wrong about VCRs in the 70's and I suggest he's wrong about digital delivery and piracy in the 21st Century. -
Re:You'll only screw yourselves...
Actually the last LOTR movie looked mighty nice on my big screen tv...the wide screen SVCD screener that was released to the net a week after the theatre release was mighty nice.
Of course you're not going to find SVCD screeners on some gay p2p network.
But that's good, the shitty little encodes made by AOL kiddies on p2p will distract the studios from the real good quality SVCDs done by people with a clue.
Heh heh.
And no two towers ain't out yet, whoever wrote that story has no clue how the VCD scene works and is full of shiat. -
Re:Bootlegs are a Way of Life in Asia
This is not exactly the case of someone sneaking a Sony HandyCam into a theater and taping among the audience. According to VCD Quality, the FTF release of AToC is a TELESYNC, which basically means that it's a high-end camera pointed at a screen, with audio recorded from the source (to eliminate audience noise). So it's better than most Cam recordings that you're alluding to. Check here for definitions of how movies are bootlegged.
That said, it's still a pretty crappy release in terms of quality. I'm sure that within a week, they'll have at least SVCD screeners or workprints available for downloads. -
Link to quality of bootlegIt looks like the article got the Drudge Report got their screen capture images from VCD Quality, a website that reports release news for pirated movies in VCD, SVCD, and DivX formats. Drudge even snipped out VCD Quality's URL from the image... Pretty shady reporting.
But from the reviews, it looks like this bootleg of ATOC isn't worth your download time. It's currently polling at 5.7 out of 10 for image quality, and 6.2 out of 10 for sound. Even for a VCD, that's pretty low. And of course, the JPG screen cap looks like a blurry mess. However bad the quality is, it is impressive that FTF was able to release SW Ep2 so early. Check out the comments forum to see what people (well, if you consider "5kR1p7 k1DDi3z" to be actual people) are saying about this bootleg.

Re:Prove it ... Where is it ...
Look here. It's real, but crappy, like you'd expect it to be.
-
It's already online...
Of course, for those who don't want to wait 7 more days, you could download the movie.
A screener is circulating (bootlegged at a press screening event) of the entire movie.
You can find details here.
