Who is right now?
I seem to remember a bunch of non believers trying to insult me when I said the 3rd of August was the date. I said come on, I run the Texas Gaming Festival, I go to E3 every year for AMDZone, and my brother writes for Voodoo. Perhaps you should listen to what I had said. You guys didn't. I'm awaiting your apologies. Anyway, this opens us up to have our Doom III tourney as we had planned at TXGF Summer 2004 Dallas the weekend before Quakecon. Sweet.

Re:doom3 release date?
Sorry, it isn't. did you go to E3? I did. I do every year, and I just happen to run the Texas Gaming Festival. And oh, my brother just happens to write for Voodooextreme. So yeah, I probably don't know what I'm talking about. I mean come on, living in Austin, there are no game developers here on anything. You are on fire!

Ringworld?
Does Halo take place on a Ringworld? Looks that way in the screenshots, but they got the perspective all wrong. By the time the curvature of ringworld brings the arc into view over the horizon, it should appear MUCH more narrow and farther away than it does in those screenshots.
This ringworld looks to be maybe a couple hundred miles in diameter and perhaps 50 miles in width, Niven's Ringworld was 180 million miles in diameter, and 1 million miles wide. The walls at the edge were 1000 miles high.
This screenshot also seem to show that the sun is offset from the center of the ring. I am having a hard time accounting for the shadow on the visible part of the ring, given the position of the sun. -
Re:Good to see
To see if PS2 can compete, just check out the same site's review of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3. PS2 is the console that I've chosen, and I'm happy based on THPS3 alone. After a lackluster first year (only game of note was SSX), Sony's catching up with Devil May Cry, Silent Hill 2, Metal Gear Solid 2, and THPS3.

This review is two weeks old...
On the cutting edge again I see...follow this link to the preview dated 10/25/01 - which is almost exactly the same article as the review. The review has a bit better writing and imagery...Talk about recycling editorial!

Actual, unretouched screenshots? This "halo effect" sure looks like a Photoshop filter the guys in our design team use.
But, then again, I'm just a developer...

Re:But can I get paid? For some good commentary from people in the industry, check out VoodooExtreme, and more specifically their Ask Devs articles. Many of them deal with getting a job in games programming.
As for what skills you will probably need:
- Math! Learn linear algebra, basic newtonian physics, some more math, taylor series, euler integration, etc.
- Learn either D3D or OpenGL. Learn how the 3D rendering path works. While you may not need this directly for a job (i.e. you are working mainly on physics or animation code), it is always beneficial.
- Experience
... write lots of sample code in your spare time. The only way to get good at it is to do it.
If you do pick up on all the above, just remember: The typical games programmer doesn't make a killing with paychecks (of course, this can vary wildly) and work 80+ hour weeks (many would call this conservative). Be warned! ;)
