Double-edged sword is a metaphor meaning use for an intended purpose or its opposite. Yes, you could do plenty of damage with a single-edge, or an icepick for that matter. :) And I meant to equate gov't and tech in the sense that you can't just say, "Oh, we trust technology to save the day." Humans are in charge, and deserve credit or blame.

I agree that America has a legally superior system, which is why I added a little about how factual deficiencies and corruption can creep in anyway. In the Cruz case, the system did work ... but in a limping way that not many would endorse.

America does do extrajudicial killings, particularly now that the Presidential ban on assassinations has been eased. An example is the recent Predator attack in Yemen, not a war zone, and which killed 6 including an American citizen. Yes, yes, these were presumably bad people, but so much for checks and balances. This is novel.

The scientists collaborating on the project believe that the database of your life could hold a vast array of items that are automatically catalogued and as easy to search as Google.

Not to mention how much easier it would make for Pentagon/Homeland Security Office to rummage through your personal information in even a more effective way.

This is now old news, it was a part of the Homeland Security bill which just passed.

In the past two weeks there has been talk of this in the New York Times (registration blah blah blah), The Washington Post and
Harper's weekly review, to name a few. NPR's All Things Considered had a commentary on this (RealAudio) the other night.

This you hold up against murder-suicide bombers in the children's areas of restaurants, and murderers who break into homes and shoot children as they hear their bedtime stories.

And if you haven't noticed, area A includes 97% of the west bank -- look it up for yourself. As to `citizenship' of those in the west bank, they are citizens -- of the PA. That Arafat does not give them any rights is hardly Israel's fault, now is it? Or are you saying that they should be citizens of Israel? I thought you wanted two seperate nations?

Do you really think that the US is after Hussein because of his past or because he has any "weapons of mass destruction"? The US, as you may know, actually aided Iraq in the Iran-Iraq War. You have to step back from the war propaganda that's currently abound in the US media. The current administration wants this war simply because of oil. The fact of whether Iraq has any has weapons what so ever is really irrelevant to the administration's plans.

Leaving aside that you make these absurd claims without providing any evidence to back them up, your allegations don't even make sense on their own terms. If, in fact, Bush's goal is to make money on oil, the last thing he would want to do is take action against Saddam Hussein -- you see, regime change in Iraq means an end to the UN sanctions against Iraq, which means a massive drop in the price of oil.

Once again you need to remember that the pro-Israel media in the US distorts the facts. The IDF has killed roughly 3 times as many Palestinians, 85% of which are civilians, than Israelis killed by suicide bombers. What do you know, as stated in this article 3 or 4 times, China does have the capability of hitting the US, and by hitting the US they mean Los Angeles, not Alaska (though a hit on the pipeline would definitely hurt us a lot). Let me quote the article.

The flaw in your dangerously outdated argument against ABM is that you base your conclusion (which you have stated twice now)on the idea that the system would never be able to destroy a full launch by the former Soviet Union. I hate to burst your bubble, but the Soviet Union no longer exists and Russia is a bit more friendly to the US. The likely culprits in a nuclear launch against the US and its allies are China, North Korea, and assorted terrorists (the terrorists having had to seize control of a silo or two in Russia or the aforementioned states). So, max, right now, we are looking at having to deal with 20 to 30 ICBMs, and maybe as much again SLBMs. Well a decent ABM system should easily be able to deal with 30 incoming ICBMs, even if that means we have to launch 10 kill vehicles per warhead. Considering the cost of losing a city, we still come out ahead. The key to stopping SLBM's is a combination of ABM (perhaps like the new Arrow missile or newer laser systems) and a pro-active defense with newer, faster attack subs co-ordinating with satellite and air based observation. We are not dealing with MAD anymore, they cannot destroy us completely (though we can destroy them). The greatest threat is the rogue launch of a missile or two, or a submarine going off on its own. These are easily taken care of if we only develop the technology. Its idiots like you who are going to cost the US and its allies millions of lives due to your blind adherence to a policy that ceased being relevant in 1991.

Of course we're not against law enforcement monitoring communications between individuals who are under investigation so long as they show just cause to a judge and receive the appropriate warrents. The main problem I have with this is that what you read is very close to what you think. I don't believe that our government has the right to tell us which books are ok, nor do I believe they have the right to judge what we read or think. It's absolutely impossible that reading something can lead to imminent danger for yourself or others. You might use knowledge gained from a book to do harm to yourself or others, but that's a decision not affected by what you've read. If you believe it's ok for the government to look into what you read, what do you think about the government surveilling your thoughts as well? Think that's silly? NASA doesn't seem to think so.

Quite alright, I'll provide the much-anticipated evidence. The FBI began its campaign of illegal monitoring and other abuses back in the 1960's during the civil rights movements. Organizations such as SNCC were routinely infiltrated by FBI agents while many of the leaders were being bugged and had their phones tapped; most of it without even so much as a warrant. The abuses continued until the 1970's when major restrictions were put in place on the FBI's domestic spying capabilities. The culmination of these efforts was the 1974 Privacy Act. (back then, the names of laws weren't usually misleading like they are now). What's been going on lately? Well, just recently, the FISA court (secretive court created to deal with foreign intelligence gathering on US soil), in an unprecidented move, blasted the FBI publicly for abuse of the FISA act, lying to the FISA court about evidence and such, and a whole host of other things. They even barred one agent from ever again appearing before the court due to his consistantly inaccurate depositions and testimony before the court.

What's my point? The FBI has, for the last 40 some-odd years shown a constant disregard for laws and civil liberties, as well as the Constitutionally-protected rights of citizens; especially with regard to matters of free speech. The evidence against the FBI is very damning, and the FISA court's anger with the FBI clearly shows they have no intention of staying within the limits of the law, even now. Now, we're giving the FBI more powers of surveillance? The USA PATRIOT act basically removed all the restrictions placed upon the FBI in the 1970's, and gave them a whole host of new powers. Did you know they can now look through your financial and banking information without so much as a visit to a courthouse? The book-bugging escapade appears as though it'll require judges to get rubber stamps made up just for the occasion. The fact that the entire process is secretive is even more frightening. As was said in a recent court ruling, "democracies die behind closed doors." But like I said, I don't think they should be able to monitor what you or I read anyway, so this is all moot.

While this is correct, we also assume that when law enforcement takes an action, especially one which has the potential for massive abuse, there's going to be some kind of oversight. The USA PATRIOT act removes virtually all oversight, granting the FBI unprecidented free reign to spy on Americans.

If anyone's interested in a little honesty-in-politics, we should rename the "war on terrorism" to "The War on Freedom and the Average Citizen", and then we should rename the USA PATRIOT act to the "Dividing and Frightening America by Providing Inappropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Freedom Act". A great many people have the (very) mistaken idea that stalking, domestic violence and murder is something that men do to women, like only whites can be racists to blacks or hispanic. The "official" numbers are lower (possibly far lower) than reality because many workers have grown discouraged and dropped out of the labor market.

It's time to move in before the situation gets worse. We can opt for x casualties now or possibly x^y casualties later in a nuclear war. It is not in our power to say "Yes war" or "No war." War is here. The question before us is: Will we defend ourselves or be conquered?

(Like Microsoft is opposed by the Anything But Microsoft coalition: Oracle, Netscape, Sun, IBM, AOL.) They are different, but they have a common opponent. This unites them. They do have solidarity in this respect. Muslims have declared their intent to turn Great Britain into an Islamic country. In recent days, they've declared their intent to terrorize Australia. They want to destroy America and Israel. They're not even satisfied with "moderate" Muslim countries like Indonesia. No non-Islamic/Wahabi country is safe. They're out for world domination.

The enemy's definition of peace is our destruction. Therefore, we have no choice but to make our definition of peace their destruction. To them, terrorism is worship, and jihad is the highest sanctification of life. (See the "Jihad for Kids" video I linked to in my previous post.)

I agree with this post. If you're handicapped, that's your own problem, and it's obvious that people with no hands are gonna have trouble typing on a keyboard, or that blind people are going to have problems using a vision-centric service, such as a commercial web site. The answer is to make a reasonable effort to offer equal opportunity to procure the services. In this case, the guy could probably have made a phone call, spoken to a manager about how he'd like the Web discount but he can't get to it cause he's blind, and the manager would authorize it. I'm glad the judge didn't make a hastey decision or try to establish such a far reaching extension of the ADA specs.

This is slander, pure and simple, for two reasons. First off, no one `moved into' the region at all -- at the time of the foundation of Israel in 1948, the area which became Israel was 85% Jewish, and had been for centuries. Second, no one was `kicked out', either -- those Palestinians who chose to become citizens of the new state of Israel have all of the rights of any other Israeli citizen, and indeed there were 17 Palestinian members of Israel's parliament (the Knesset) last I checked. This is a marked contrast to the Arab states, almost all of which expelled their entire Jewish populations when Israel was founded.

At Jenin, for example, only 53 died, by Arafat's own numbers, and almost all of those were combatants. Hamas' report of the fighting at Jenin, as told to the Egyptian weekly al-Ahram confirms that those who were killed by the Israelis were combatants who died in battle.

You can explain this in a number of ways that don't directly involve god, but, as usual, if you could prove that it directly involved god then you could also prove that god exists, which is rather difficult :). Also, I'll admit that it's a stretch to say that these are the surveys you're looking for, but I would challenge you to consider an appropriate survey and do a search to see if someone has, in fact, already attempted such a survey.

Regarding Iraq, I haven't seen a credible report of Iraqi involvement in 911, and if there has been such a report, the US Administration is doing an alarmingly nice job of keeping it quiet, which seems to be completely contrary to the desire to get some of our allies to support an invasion. The meetings with Atta have not been confirmed, and US officials don't even seem to believe them. About the WMD stuff, yeah, Iraq wants WMD, but the evidence of a real nuclear threat is severely lacking. But even if they were pursuing nukes -- get real. Iraq has as much right as any regime to pursue whatever policy its statecraft dictates. Why would we feel threatened by Iraqi nukes? They could never develop a capability that could seriously threaten American interests, not even indirectly; as self-aggrandizingly cruel as Saddam Hussein is, he is neither suicidal nor stupid. Keep in mind too his regime is secular - he has about as much reason to fear the al Qaeda types as we do; more in fact, since the Iraqi citizens are far more likely to take up his call to overthrow their government than American muslims, Chicago gangbangers and Marin county white kids included.

Finally, I don't know why you want to let Mr. binLaden dictate the terms of our conflict with him. Of course he says it's a "clash of civilizations" - but we don't have to buy into that; it only helps him. If we want to defeat him and his kind we need to make sure the rest of the Arab Muslim world doesn't believe it's a clash of civilizations. We won't be able to do that by bombing them to kingdom come.

Job security IS great. I've worked at a university for a number of years and the fact is, if someone should be fired, they won't be. I have never seen it happen.

You don't even have to do your work. It is so difficult to fire anyone that they'll just hire someone else to do the work you were supposed to do.
The hours are great too: its strictly 9:30 am to 3:30 pm. You also get plenty of time-off. Where I'm at its 8 hours leave every two weeks = over 5 weeks off per year. You might have to tell them you have a tummy ache to get 2.5 of those weeks off.

I live within half a day drive of about 11 (quick count) major rivers that were devastated to that point. 6/22/02 was the 33rd anniversary of the Cuyahoga River catching on fire. The river burned like it was gasoline. I'd call that a dead river. Luckily a 33 year combination of declining industry and major watershed restoration efforts has restored it at least to a habitable shadow of its former self. Unfortunately major increases in population, energy production, and heavy commercial livestock production are gradually hammering the Cuyahoga and many other fragile watersheds back to their industrial state, albeit with a different concoction of toxins.

Food may be cheap now, but there has to be a balance in the world between farming and biodiversity. You can't turn the whole world into a farm, nor even half of it, with no fresh water for anyone but humans with filters. It's just not sustainable. (FYI 'sustainable' doesn't mean we can feed all the people, 'sustainable' means trees and bugs and beavers and bunny rabbits and little soil mites are necessary for our survival.)

And unlike Israel, which has gone out of its way to avoid harming non-combatants, and which even Arafat now admits has not killed any great number of civilians, and those only by accident in pitched battle with Palestinian gunmen who disguise themselves as civilians and hide in residential areas, the murder suicide bombers seek to kill as many civilians as they can.

As for `fascists', here we find ourself observing a conflict between Israel, a free democracy seeking to defend itself against terrorism, and Arafat, a totalitarian dictator who has repeatedly called for the destruction of Israel and the murder of Jews. Just which side are you calling `fascist' here?

You seem to think that after the Oslo agreement pulled out of palestinian areas, this is not the case. They left a few areas they chose alone, in yet other areas they have started israeli settlements, presumedly to have a "right" to that land if there ever is international intervention

This is simply untrue. fully 98% of the West Bank has been under full PA control since Oslo. The remaining 2% are pre-existing settlements which Israel has indicated a willingness to hand over to PA control if the PA would provide police protection for the citizenship. In the current climate, where the PA police forces are the ones attacking the settlements, this is not feasible. Or are you arguing that the Palestinians have a right to ban Jews from living in their territory? In South Africa this was practiced against blacks and was called apartheid. In Germany, this was called Judenrein. Why would this be okay for the Palestinians? And do I need to remind you that in marked contrast to this Palestinians who live in Israel proper have all of the rights of Israeli citizens? Indeed, the last time I checked there were 17 Palestinian Arab members of the Israeli parliament (the Knesset).

Arafat is the leader of the al-Aqsa brigades, Fatah, and Tanzim, the three groups responsible for the vast majority of the murder-suicide bombings committed over the last two years. He still to this day repeatedly calls for such bombings when speaking in Arabic, even while making overtures to the west in English.

The difference is that while Palestinians terrorists go out of their way to maximize civilian casualties, the Israeli army has gone way out of their way to avoid civilian casualties, such as fighting house-by-house instead of fighting from the air. In addition, despite wild claims made by the Palestinians earlier, even Arafat himself, in his official report of the fighting at Jenin confirms that only 53 Palestinians were killed in total in the fighting there, and all but one or two were combatants. Hamas, in their account of the fighting at Jenin confirms that those Palestinians who died there were combatants who died in battle.

This is simply slander. The Israelis have again and again offered the Palestinians all of their demands (most recently in 2000), only to have the Palestinians come back with a new round of demands and a new wave of attacks on civilians.

The fact is, Palestinian school textbooks show Palestine as encompassing all of what is now Israel, and speak of Jews as `pigs and monkeys' who must be slaughtered. Palestinian leaders (including Arafat) repeatedly promise their own people the whole region and the destruction of Israel. The matter thus comes down to a simple choice: If the Palestinians stop the murder-suicide bombings, Israel will leave them alone, and there will be peace. If Israel stops defending itself, the Palestinians will commit genocide, and you Europeans won't care. Which do you think is the road to peace?

The common human can manage the 1 1/2 foot distance of a keyboard fairly well as evidenced by the number of God awful personal web pages on Geocities. Even though I use the most "gooey" Graphical User Interface, Apple's Mac OS X [apple.com], if I want to manage data, files, etc., I jump to the "Terminal" and do it through the Command Line Interface. Even with Mac OS X's speech control and IBM's Via Voice software, I can still type faster than I can talk -- in an intelligible manner.

I always find it funny in "near future" films how complicated the input interfaces are. They are dancing their hands in a virtual space acting like data had a form that you could grab and move. What a waste of effort. If you have to flail your arms around for 8 hours, you are going to be exhausted...but at least you will only have to buy one ticket to fly Southwest [washtimes.com]. The amount of effort required to manipulate the 100+ keys of a standard QWERTY keyboard is minimal. Though I have never had problems, I am sure the keyboard design can be improved to prevent repetitive injuries to certain users. We are all different shapes and sizes in various regions of our anatomy. Its hard to pick the "average human being" for a generic device.

The keyboard is a powerful input device. Even with the 130 year-old QWERTY keyboard [earthlink.net], human kind has been able to create wonders -- without it, we would have never made it to the moon. Compared to the original 1872 keyboard layout by C. L. Sholes, my clear plastic keyboard that came with my Dual G4 is not much different. The common human can manage the 1 1/2 foot distance of a keyboard fairly well as evidenced by the number of God awful personal web pages on Geocities. Even though I use the most "gooey" Graphical User Interface, Apple's Mac OS X, if I want to manage data, files, etc., I jump to the "Terminal" and do it through the Command Line Interface. Even with Mac OS X's speech control and IBM's Via Voice software, I can still type faster than I can talk -- in an intelligible manner.

I always find it funny in "near future" films how complicated the input interfaces are. They are dancing their hands in a virtual space acting like data had a form that you could grab and move. What a waste of effort. If you have to flail your arms around for 8 hours, you are going to be exhausted...but at least you will only have to buy one ticket to fly Southwest. The amount of effort required to manipulate the 100+ keys of a standard QWERTY keyboard is minimal. Though I have never had problems, I am sure the keyboard design can be improved to prevent repetitive injuries to certain users. We are all different shapes and sizes in various regions of our anatomy. Its hard to pick the "average human being" for a generic device.

The keyboard is a powerful input device. Even with the 130 year-old QWERTY keyboard, human kind has been able to create wonders -- without it, we would have never made it to the moon. Compared to the original 1872 keyboard layout by C. L. Sholes, my clear plastic keyboard that came with my Dual G4 is not much different. I know it so well, I don't think I will ever use the Dvorak keyboard but my future kids might.

I'm a child of the 80s, and every time we had a lecture on petroleum in grade school we were always going to run dry by 2012. When I debated in high school, we were at most going to have enough oil to last until 2020. Now I see that the date has been pushed back yet again -- these sorts of games do not rally confidence to the cause. Now that oil fields are being refilled, perhaps they'll have to re-hash their guesses yet again?

Now, I'm all for real, workable renewable resources -- and the best bet right now is with nuclear and crop-derivated oils -- but when a doomsday case is misstated repeatedly it does the cause no good at all.

On April 16, Newsday, the Long Island newspaper, published a startling report that old oil fields in the Gulf of Mexico were somehow being refilled. That is, new oil was being discovered in fields where it previously had not existed.
Scientists, led by Mahlon Kennicutt of Texas A&M University, speculate that the new oil is surging upward from deposits well below those currently in production. "Very light oil and gas were being injected from below, even as the producing was going on," he said.
Although it is not yet known whether this is a worldwide phenomenon or commercially important, the new discovery suggests there may be far more oil and gas within the Earth's core than previously thought.
Mr. Kennicutt is not the first to suggest that vast hydrocarbon deposits may lie well below those currently known. In 1995, the New York Times reported that geochemist Jean Whelan of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts had also found evidence that oil was moving upward into reservoirs from somewhere far deeper.
With growing improvements in technology that are making possible oil drilling at greater and greater depths, it may soon be economically feasible to explore and produce oil from these deep deposits.
The existence of oil much farther below the surface than it was previously thought to exist raises new questions about the origins of oil and natural gas. It has commonly been thought they are the decayed remains of long dead plants and animals. However, as hydrocarbons are found at extreme depths, this explanation becomes increasingly implausible.
Astronomer Thomas Gold of Cornell University has long been dissatisfied with the dead dinosaur theory of oil's origins. He argues that oil and gas are in fact the remains of methane left over from the Earth's origin. Methane, he points out, is one of the most common minerals in the universe. When the stars and planets were formed eons ago, it was one of the central building blocks from which matter formed.
If Mr. Gold's theory is true, it makes sense we would continue to find hydrocarbons everywhere within the Earth's core, and not just at the surface, where plants and animals exist. Thus the new research is at least consistent with Mr. Gold's theory, even if it still remains to be proven.
The new scientific evidence that energy supplies may be vastly greater than previously imagined is only the latest blow to the doomsayers. Such people have been around for 200 years, preaching that mankind has reached the limit to growth because we have found all the oil there is to be found. For at least a century, for example, the U.S. Geological Survey has consistently reported that America had only about 10 years worth of oil left.
In defense of the Geological Survey, it was referring only to proven reserves. These are fields that have been explored, and where estimates have been made regarding their size and production potential. But of course, exploration is a continuing process, so that new reserves are discovered all the time.
Economist Julian Simon long made the point that the size of proven reserves cannot be divorced from the price of oil. At current price levels, only about 40 percent of oil can be extracted from existing fields. The remaining 60 percent, which is known to exist, cannot be produced economically and is therefore not included in proven reserve estimates. However, higher prices and advanced technology can easily make it profitable to expand production in existing fields.
Higher prices also encourage exploration into areas that geologists strongly suspect to have oil, but where drilling costs are too high at present. Only a small portion of the Earth's surface has ever been explored for oil, and there is no reason to believe there are not many large deposits yet to be discovered.
If oil were really becoming more scarce, we would expect to see prices rising over time. But in fact, the real price of oil, adjusted for inflation, has been remarkably stable at around $15 per barrel. Temporary price spikes by OPEC have not proved sustainable because they brought forth new supplies, encouraged substitution of oil with coal or gas, and stimulated conservation by consumers and businesses.
In short, even if the new scientific evidence about oil is wrong, one can still say the world will never run out of it. Higher prices will always bring new supplies to market. As Bjorn Lomberg points out in his new book, "The Skeptical Environmentalist" (Cambridge University Press), $40 per barrel oil will immediately increase world reserves from a 40 years supply to 250 years because vast known oil shale deposits will become economically viable.
Of all the things we have to worry about in this day and age, running out of oil should not be one of them.

Well, as they say on tv, `we report, you decide'. I would argue that there is a strong liberal bias to much of the moderation which goes on here, you seem to feel that there is not. I dare say the readers of our posts can decide that for themselves, taking this thread and others as their guide.

As to your bit about intolerance, I would argue that it misses a key point. Modern `I feel your pain' liberalism, with its morass of identity politics, anti-Americanism, and subjectivist morality, has little use for rational argument and the respect for civil discourse which was a proud tradition of the liberalism of the past. From our college campuses, to our network news, liberals increasingly see labels and smears as a replacement for reason. Conservatism, with its central emphasis on reason and on individual rights, is less guilty of this.

Hint: when was the last time you saw a small group of conservative protesters use insults, violence or threats of violence to shut down a liberal speech, event, or newspaper? It happens to conservatives all the time -- see here, or here, or here or here or here.

The technology is improving.
Most of the people didn't have equipment to copy LPs, and then tapes came along. And nothing changed really (although I bet there was legal battle, as I remember the one with VHS)

Now, CDs are digital equivalent of LPs :)
They were hard to copy originaly.
But it happened.

Same happens with radio.
AM, then FM and now satellite radio (that uses digitally encoded signal BTW).
The fact that streamripper separates songs is just technological advantage, same as perfect CD copies. You can't stop progress.
