Piquepaille: please stop your SPAM & BLOG WHO
Must you spam and blog whore
/. and all the other public blog sites? Are you being paid to post press releases everywhere and call them technology trends?
Please stop double-posting links to your blog (and failing to identify it as your blog
... NOT 'more details and references in this overview' as you so fondly like to obfuscate and trick people into generating more clickthroughs for your advertising). I won't even address the fact that you rarely (if ever) provide any details or references that aren't in a press release or news article that you've ripped off. Please stop, Roland Piquepaille , SPAM and BLOG WHORE behavior is highly discourteous and dishonest to readers.
Be up front, and tell them that you are directing them to your blog, so you can earn more money from advertising.
Otherwise it's a form of bait and switch.

Re:a patent for the wheel
well, the most nafarious patent of them all was when an ozzie man decided he wanted to patent the wheel, and actually succeded..... i would rather convert my car to square wheels before paying any damn royalites on a wheel...
Is this you by chance? -
Roland Piquepaille is a spammer
Piquepaille == spammer. Instead of using email to spam, he spams sites like Slashdot (and many others) using his blog.
Roland Piquepaille steals content and simply posts it on his blog without permission, how would you feel if someone took your hard work and just reposted it making them cash and you nothing ? call it what it is theft
Here is a direct quote from Piquepaille's Blogads advertising entry:
My stories are often mentioned by Slashdot, BoingBoing or Nanodot.
Smart Mobs and Mindjack Daily Relay are also sites where I put
summaries of my stories, giving this blog a traffic of 150,000 visits
per month. So if you have an interesting technology to promote, put
your ads on this blog.
Why doesn't he just say "So if you want to associate yourself with a spammer, give me your money."?
Ignore the fact that he has no "stories" of his own, offers no original content and zero insight.
Like most spammers, he has no incentive to stop because it's profitable for him to spam Slashdot and other sites.
Make it unprofitable. Stop visiting his weblog. Express your
displeasure to the editors. Express your displeasure to Radio Userland
(they are a quiet participant in his spamming
[weblogs.com] since Userland has a small ad on the blog). Express your
displeasure to the advertisers. Let them know you won't buy products
they advertise there. Last of all, express your displeasure about his spam to Piquepaille himself.
You make Piquepaille's continued spamming possible with your traffic.
(As for all the spam references in this post, some might call it poetic justice. Maybe Google will pick it up and let everyone know.)br

Re:I think I'll donate 1,000 bucks toFirst, how to verify that the creator of a giftfile is the "owner" of a work?
A couple years ago I participated in some online discussions of Tipster, which was an attempt to come up with a protocol for easy payments to musicians. We just wanted a button on our music player software, hit the button and donate a quarter or whatever to the band. We got stuck on exactly this issue. Several primary solutions were discussed:
1) Tuneprint servers. There are a couple proprietary algorithms out there, "Tuneprint" being one, which are supposed to reliably identify pieces of music. The record industry is attempting to use one for filtering out pirated work on P2P networks. We wanted to use it to reliably identify works for the purpose of paying the band. Unfortunately I don't think there are any open algorithms so you'd have to get one of the proprietary companies to sign on, and I think they're all trying to get in bed with the music industry. Plus, you're stuck with one giant database that gets hit every time somebody wants to make a micropayment...you have central databases with Giftfile as well, but the file tells you what server to hit, so you don't have a single chokepoint. (On the other hand, tuneprint would work on all the files that are already out there.)
2) Digital signatures. Nice in theory because it doesn't rely on a centralized infrastructure. It does not stop you from taking credit for someone else's work, but if someone does falsely sign a file, the cryptography verifies that only the key owner could have done it, and you can sue him for fraud. I was in favor of this until I read a Bruce Schneier article, warning against suing people based on what they supposedly digitally signed. Too easy to steal most peoples' keys. You don't want to end up in court because you didn't properly secure your box, and some joker felt like causing havoc.
3) Some kind of certification authority, which verifies authorship and then puts its own cryptographic stamp of approval on released files. This would probably work well with Giftfile, since you've already got nonprofits set up that could do this sort of thing...but so far as I've seen in their descriptions, they're not doing this, just letting people sign files themselves and upload keys to an automated server, as in solution 2.

No VB.NET supportI develop ASP.NET applications using VB.NET, and it's disappointing that the VB.NET development seems to be at a complete standstill. I've been tracking the mbas (Mono Basic) project since the beginning of the Mono project, and there's been virtually no activity on it. It appears to be the work of a single hacker in his non-existant spare time.
Although the official reason that GnomeBasic was dropped was because of "stagnation", the real reason that it died was because Mono was supposed to take it's place.
If that happened, I've seen no evidence of it.
While you can write Mono code in Java, PHP, Logo, Oberon, Pascal, Forth and Lisp, VB is still unavailable.
It's a pity such a popular language appears to be entirely ignored.

One of the purposes of Longhorn is to destroy the web as we know it.
It reminds me of this quote from Scoble's weblog:But, being afraid of Microsoft and making up conspiracy theories is always more fun than what'll really happen. I think we should start a new marketing campaign: "who can make up the most outrageous thing about Longhorn and get it printed in an industry magazine or pointed to by Slashdot?"
He spends part of that entry urging Mozilla coders to add functionality that ties in with XAML and Avalon, because he uses FireFox himself. And he's a Microsoft-employed Microsoft zealot. -

The main overview in one of the two installation examples in the article seems to consist of the weather channel, CNN headline news, two giant corporate logos, some sort of other generic news/bloomberg channel, and two big empty white placholder boxes. All of that trash together seems to be well over fity or sixty percent of the total screen area. And there's no way those folks are able to read what's left. Seems like a ridiculuous waste of money if you ask me. I would have just put a couple cheap seven inch lcds in everybody's cubicle if somebody had succeeded in convincing me those infotainment channels were somehow fundamentally integral to the operation of williams corp.

As much as I am a fan of everything mozilla, and can't stand IE, the next version of IE will come out in Windows XP SP2. Lets get our facts straight.
What's new? Apparently a pop-up blocker, and extensions. (That sounds familiar.) Also they locked down the "default zone" so that if (when) a security breach occurs, a virus won't be running in a privileged security mode.
This all comes at a cost. Some old plug-ins don't work. At least that'll back the people off from bitching when Firefox 0.9 comes out and everybody has to fix their extensions. -
13.3 vs 13.5, correcting numbers?
According to the comparison Webb is able to see 13.5 billion light years back in time, not 13.7. And Hubble able to see 13.3 not 13.5.
