The point is not to make the software run on the same hardware for 200 years. But to make software that still serves its purpose for a long time.

Take accounting: They still use the system they started with. A telnet(or ssh) client connecting to a console or menu based server running the database, the server itself is about 1/10th to 1/20th of the physical size it was first, and the client machines has been upgraded and replaced.
But the old system is still in use because of the speed and usability.

Same with libraries with large databases of their books, they cannot change database and update every year or third for that sake.. It would cost a lot of time and money.. and there is no real point in it. It works!

First I have to say: In the beginning I hated the spatial file mangaer, but then I got realy fast used to it. And if I intend to browse alot I placed a shortcut with the --browser (or whatever) argument.

Metaphors: The article speeks about real-life metaphors such as books and drawers. I can understand why this was nesecarry in the early life of computers to make things more understandable, but now computers is as much used as drawers and books, if not more.. and there shouldn't be any reason to try to be like those.

It is a physical thing and should have its own design.

    Justice to the computers!

  19. Re:Learning curve? on Buy Lindows, Get Fedora and Mandrake Too? · · Score: 1

Fedora may very well have some problems, but then i use it for experimenting. And I like it.. people have always liked different distros for different reasons.

Don't realy see why RPM is a broken system.
It is a good way to handle dependencies, however it is so advanced that a package manager is useful. like yum/apt-get. or a GUI like the great ones mandrake provide.

advanced doesn't mean difficult as you said. i didn't mean the distros were difficult for advaced users, then it is just an advantage when you can configure performance and services as you want them.
But i guess you can do that with every distro since they still got a command line.. :)

  20. Learning curve? on Buy Lindows, Get Fedora and Mandrake Too? · · Score: 2, Interesting

To me it seems like three diffrent levels of distros in userfrendlyness, to the new linux user.

    - Lindows for the newbie
    - Mandrake for the more novice
    - Fedora for the more expreienced and experimenting

This could be the package for people new to linux wanting to try it out.. And ready to blow their machine up some times.

Lindows is indeed a soft switch for those migrating to linux from windows. But somewhat locked into that position.

This would perhaps mean that the user buys at least one CnR license, then realizes he doesn't realy have to pay anything and switches to the one with the cutest penguin(mandrake?).

Perhaps better for Linux in general than for the Lindows distro.
