Re:Not true.
It wouldn't be shocking to see an appeals court hold this up and I could see it going all the way to the state Supreme Court, if not higher. The problem for the proponents of this case is that they are strongly outnumbered, and not just by speeders. Today a group of area lawmakers are unveiling their legislation to make the cameras illegal in Ohio. But I could see judges siding with the cameras on this, especially if the company that operates the cameras gives decides to give a nice donation to the judges re-election campaign. Welcome to our new democracy, that is much more like an auction than ever before.

Re:It was on a boat
Worse, this is the second time a NASA barge has hit a bridge in a little over four months. The first time knocked a section of the bridge down, and they just got a new section installed about a week ago.
I'm beginning to think that NASA needs to seriously improve the rigorousness of their training/selection process for barge captains. Just saying.

Re:This seems...
New Madrid is also primarily under Missouri. Its effects in Ohio consist of influencing other faults and (in the 1812 earthquake you mentioned) causing residents in a town to leave their homes. For comparison, note that California has had significant earthquakes roughly every year along the San Andreas fault. What's actually in Ohio is far smaller and even less active than the main New Madrid area.

Re:Nothing to surprising
"Balance"? BS. What you end up is that 10% owns 80% of the wealth and the tendency is increasing.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wealth_inequality_in_the_United_StatesHumans are neither greedy bastards nor selfless angels. Humans are all different and are motivated by a very wide range of things, some are motivated by wealth, some are motivated by doing a useful job and some just want do science or math.
But in the "free market capitalism" only the people who are greedy bastards are going to win. Also as the decline of the American economy is showing, it's not a good thing for everyone. All the people which are motivated by other things (like doing a useful job, helping others, science, math, philosophy, etc.) are now expect to pay off the debts of the greedy bastards (the big banks).
That is why such "pure" models like capitalism and communism just don't work. China tried the communism route, now they are pretty much free market. The USA is going down the capitalism route, now the banks own everything and people dying because of bad tooth (yes that is in the USA 24-Year-Old Dad Dies Of Tooth Infection, and you think you live in a first world country?).

Violent Crime is Condoned in U.S.
The scariest thing about that story is the legal consequences of their actions:
Hill and Holt pleaded guilty. It's expected they'll be fined and sentenced to supervised diversion.
Clearly, in the U.S. violent crime is tolerated and condoned, but victimless crime (like crimes that involve "sex" and "drugs") often involve many years in a penitentiary.

Re:What about the presumption of innocence?
I think this article encapsulates the difference nicely. Cincinnati Police pulled over a black man for a traffic infraction, and tased his (black, female) passenger for no reason. The story would have ended there, except it turns out she was the daughter of a city councilman! Whoops! Even then, there was no "lawsuit lottery," however.
They also (of course) defensively charged her with an open container violation and obstruction.
The FOP claims it was justified. (Legally impotent) Chief Tom Streicher tells us that the officer was already fired for similar incidents, but they can't actually fire officers in Cincinnati, because the FOP controls the arbitration. This is nothing new; in 2001 the shooting of an unarmed (black) suspect spurred the Cincinnati Race Riots. Yeeehaw! They actually declared a curfew (for white people too--not that you could find any downtown--theater attendance was suffering already). In particular, read about the results of the lawsuit against the police, and then consider the current situation.
I'm not saying that legal action is futile, just that I think the situation is a little more complex than you are crediting. Also, are you seriously defending the Arizona law? The whole reason that it is so objectionable is that evidence of some crime is not required. -
Re:"Innocent until proven guilty"The difference is intent. People choose to drink, they don't choose to be diabetic. Do you really need to be told something so obvious? Falling asleep at the wheel isn't the same as driving drunk either; the punishment would never be the same. Intent absolutely can and does matter in the eyes of the law and in real ethics. I'm a bit annoyed that I have to bother to point this out.
Furthermore, if you are unsafe to drive, you can pull over. Yet if you are drunk, you still get charged. So if you are drunk, the law actually encourages you NOT to pull over and keep driving. And if you are diabetic, an attack can set upon you quite suddenly. But if you pull over, they'll treat you like a drunk. (example(s) below)
And it doesn't take much googling to find that having a clear breathalyzer doesn't automatically free you of harassment:

... http://www.phoenixnewtimes.com/content/printVersion/733637 ... Oh wait, this guy was pulled over! NOT driving. Still treated the same. ... and sometimes they lie .But hey, if I can pull up those examples in 1 minute, you can bet there are 1000s more.
And really, are you incapable of googling "Without breathalyzer"? At least spend 10 seconds before you say "I think what you said sounds fishy". You waste both our time, and mislead the public. People are also charged when blowing below the limit. You might have to dig down in those results some, but what you are looking for is available without needing me around to show it to you.
Please. Understand that reality sucks more than you think it does

When was the last time you saw a right-wing group marching?
Today. There's also another one coming up this month. :) -
Re:Great idea
Just out of curiousity, is there any precedence for parents being charged with parental negligence in this type of situation?
In Michigan a father let an adult male who was dating his under the age of consent daughter live in their house for some time. The father presented no particular objections to the relationship, and, as I recall, bought the daughter condoms for the express purpose of sex with the adult male.
Relationships between everyone concerned soured to the point that the father reported his daughter's boyfriend to police for violation AOC statutes, and it ended up that the father became charged with acting as an accessory to that violation. (
As you can see, prosecutors avoid these issues. It sets up horrible precedence that gets very complex. The fact that the father bought condoms was a key fact in charging him with the crime. If that's the case, then handing out condoms to 15 year olds might very well bring on the same obligations/liabilities.
It's the closest thing I can think of. Article here. -
