Ben & Jerry's was way too accommodating in their reply. They should have told PETA to fuck off. They'd only have lost like 1 or 2 customers.

I'm not too worried about Comcast. The things they do (especially this and the whole guy-sleeping-on-the-job thing) would only serve to either get people moving to other (non-cable?) ISPs (if any) or revolting for fair cable-company laws; it's all shooting themselves in the foot to me.

I am far, far more sickened by my favorite evil Northeast US company, Cablevision; they do seem to provide good service (my parents get cable and my siblings get their Triple Play; I've seen no problems with service, but the "Caller ID on iO TV" spooks me a bit), at the expense of basketball teams worth rooting for (FYI, Garden owners: free food does not make up for team negligence...not that you'd care with the money you make with that Triple Play and its associated annoying ads), competing stadiums (granted, Verizon is no innocent company by any means), competing ISPs, new subway/train stations, and maybe even commuter security (Cablevision suggests otherwise, but their words are hard for me to take as told).

To answer parent comment's question, I suppose people subscribe because...well, when you get email, Colbert, VoIP and such powerful, important abilities like the ability to RickRoll others and Digg the result (ugh *vomits*), who cares about silly things like fair and lawful treatment of consumers, sports fans, and competing ISPs?

Me, I'll use DSL (Verizon, which hasn't given me much, if any, throttling problems) until there's a good free wireless network or whatever, and I've already subscribed to a different TV provider that offers HD free (I don't care that much for Olbermann). To those far from good antenna coverage: good luck, and ditch cable anyway.

Not being from New York I didn't know much about the man, so I checked, and it turns out he's a Democrat. So ever since yesterday I've been wondering if this was an attempt to bring down the Democratic Governor of a key state, like they did in Alabama. I'll be curious to see how much media complacency there is in the New York case.

Uh, maybe you weren't aware, but that is pretty much exactly what the NYPD have started doing themselves lately.

That said, I know because I asked that the preparers have to go through a several week course, and pass a final test with at least 80-85% competency or they wash out of the program.

I think my experience trumps yours here. I took the H&R Block course. There were quite a few incompetent people taking it with me. And not a single one of them failed.

Some are also trained as Financial Advisors or Loan Advisors for Block subsidiaries, so they can sometimes point out methods of saving additional tax $ based on good investments, mortgage refinancing, etc..

And the vast majority aren't, and are specifically informed that they "are not auditors" and therefore are not supposed to advise their clients on any tax issues. They are merely supposed to ask the proper questions (which appear on their computer screen) and type them into the computer.

As for their offer to check past returns, you should realize that the people doing that checking essentially aren't getting paid by H&R Block to do it. See there is a minimal hourly salary, but it is drawn against a commission structure. All but the most incompetent employees earn more off commissions, so they aren't paid anything when there aren't any customers, so Block gives them some busy work during the slow hours checking other people's returns.

Obviously if you double check a lot of returns, you're going to come up with a lot of mistakes. I've come up with thousand dollar mistakes checking H&R Block returns from previous years, so it's not like H&R Block is special there.

Those who can do. Those who can't work for H&R Block.

Main thing for me as a small consulting company owner is that you know you're not dealing with an Enron-esque company -- their ethics and credibility are top notch.

Ha! H&R Block has been sued over and over again by the IRS for ripping off their customers. And that's just things that the company itself was responsible for. The employees pull even bigger scams.
