Re:Idea!
Actually, it looks like there's a http://www.com/ as well.
I think someone already thought of this. You're going to have a heck of a time in court. I would suggest incorporating "W", and then just sue everyone three times over.

Ignorant
This article is pretty ignorant.
To be fair, two things are true. One, Second Life has a woefully steep learning curve. Two, it's hard to find the things you'd really want to find in Second Life. Two is connected to One.... There are lots of people doing lots of creative and interesting things in Second Life, but it takes a fair bit of experience, or somebody leading you around, to know how to find them.
The writer of this sloppy piece did a quick dash and look, almost willfully avoiding putting in the most minimal effort it would take to really find out what's there. It would be like somebody "trying to figure out what this web thing is all about" by starting at http://www.com/ without knowing about sites like Google. Again, yes, the web is more mature and as such it's far easier to find what you're looking for... but that is how distorted the picture this article paints is.
Yes, the sorts of things you're interested in will often not be easily or readily found. But once you start figuring out how to find them, there's all kinds of great stuff going on.
Two things I'm involved with-- which, thus, are the sorts of things I'm interested in-- are science and theater. My theater group is at http://www.avreptheater.com/ , and my science group is at http://www.mica-vw.org./ If you want to see evidence of a whole bunch of people showing up at once at something that at least I consider interesting (although I'm extremely biased), check this out: http://www.pookymediafilms.com/2009/05/dr-knop-talks-astronomy.html

scuttlemonkey
it's a freaking pain in the b-hind reading scuttlemonkeys items when he insists on linking every second f'ing word. do you want people to be able to read your blurtings or not? people writing like you are a curse on the internet that spells REALLY BAD AND ANNOYING NAVIGATION.
that harmless rant aside, nice stuff! -

Re:Maybe Yahoo is changing for a reasonI don't envy google. Their own popularity is killing their usefulness as a search for retail products. For actual information, such as the governmental structure of Canada, I've found they're still the best engine though.
Exactly. Have you checked out www.com? It bills itself as "where the web begins", but its search engine is entirely ads. Google, OTOH, has been struggling under the mighty weight of unscrupulous morons who prefer to ruin the internet than to make dollars honestly, but their information searches are still very good.

Re:Where advertising should really go
Sounds like Dan's Data.
:)
But you also need random links, too. -
Re:If slashdotted...
I don't think CNET is going to become slashdotted. Go to www.com. Who owns it? CNET. Karma whore?

Re:I've surfed it all!
Yeah, but www.com is Where the Web Begins!

Re:I know!I'll start a company called "www" or maybe "com"...
WWW.COM, Inc. already thought of it. Good thing they're not suing anybody.

Re:Do it to it
Countries can do whatever they like with their TLDs. That doesn't explain why we should "open up a few more"....
That's exactly what i'm talking about. Countries can do whatever they want, but they really shouldn't. the entire purpose of the TLDs are to seperate the internet into categories. I know someone already mentioned that people get .net's because the .com is already taken. I still think that unless you run your business out of tonga, you shouldn't register a .to. This is EXACTLY why we need more TLDs because .com is too broad, along with and since .org and .net are filling up fast, we need more TLDs to work better. a .gnu would be more that just kr4d 1337. it would make an easy way to get to what you want. www.gnu could have a nice little index page of the free software out there. I think we need to tighten up the domain registration thing. I mean, what would you expect at www.whitehouse.com Certainly not what's there. Same thing with www.com. shouldn't that be something like an official WWW page or an index of Companies online or something? nope, it's the "worlds biggest online music provider." that makes a lot of sense. People try to fool users with misleading domain names, and i think that more TLDs would help curb this practice.

Already a stand up comedy chanel
If you try www.com it's got a stand up channel and it's free (Real Audio required). Quite good too, Dennis Leary etc.

they're all taken. All of 'em
Dilbert_ writes "Since most dot com domains of the form www.[common english word].com are taken today, you could theoretically surf around using just a dictionary. Now you can search the web from a page that will will automatically generate a fresh load of links, based on a dictionnary. " For some reason this amuses me greatly.
