NZ Police (email) porn scandal!
Well seems like the slashdot crowd havent heard about the recent NZ police porn scandal (which has been a huge deal in the media!)

"A police audit has found that about 20 percent of email capacity was taken up with pornographic images, and 300 officers are under investigation for having pornography on work computers. "
now, perhaps monitoring software could have at least prevented the email exchange of porn, would have made it a whole lot less embarrassing for the police! -
It *is* still vaporwareIt sounds like it's more advanced vaporware than in the past, but it's still vaporware. One of the news articles has a bit more information: "Wisconsin communications company Sanswire unveiled its almost-finished prototype of a hard-framed, unmanned airship designed to fly in the stratosphere 21 km above the earth and send broadband and mobile phone signals to an area the size of Texas." and quotes them discussing FAA certification as "We don't have a test date, but we're hoping for midsummer," "But we're still years ahead of any other program doing anything like this."
They've been hyping this for years, and while the telecom crash of the early 2000s kicked the chair out from under their business plans, they'd still be really really cool if they ever deployed the bloody things.
By the way, their PR mockup picture of the Stratellite looks amazingly like the whale in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

That strategy can have some nasty reprocusions, you might consider a different one.

Re:local leftism is the way to save America?
Europeans also have MUCH higher tax rates, higher unemployment, and lower economic growth rates.
I can't speak for Europe, but I can speak for New Zealand. New Zealand has Universal Healthcare (as well as a parallel private system if you're willing to pay), long unemployment benefits, and many of the other features attributed to western european countries.
New Zealand has an unemployment rate of 3.6% which is very respectable, and a decent economic growth rate.
And as for taxes - I can give a good comparison there: For a time I was working in New Zealand and my brother was working in the US. We were earning the same salary in local currency. After tax (including social security payments, state taxes, and all the rest) I had more cash in hand than my rother. In practical terms New Zealand had a lower tax rate than the US.
New Zealand is far from perfect (it has many problems in fact), but it is an example that universal healthcare and unemplyment benefits needn't result in Europe's tax, unemployment and growth rates.
Please note that I am neither advocating for or against either the US or European style of doing things here, merely pointing out that your correlation doesn't always hold up.

Re:The problems of British industry
Don't fret. It's not an English invention but actually another (along with powered flight) New Zealand invention.

NZ didn't spend that much to win/retain the cupNew Zealand's win of the 'America's Cup' certainly wasn't on the same budget as the American attempts at defence & even our defence last time round wasn't that well funded.
Money helps but it also comes down to ideas and being a nation of sailors.
Get your red socks on -
Re:About as boring as Formula One is now...I went to school with Dean Barker who is Team New Zealands Skipper.
You can hardly say that it is just technology that wins. This guy has been sailing Optimists and P Classes since he was a young lad. You can hardly call a 1947 and a 1923 desgined boat state of the art. The optimist is a complete pig to sail and he still won in that, even though all the boats were one design
What makes him a good sailor is years of skill, practice and a city where sailing is part of your school ciriculum from when you are 10 years old.
Also technology is making the sport a lot better to watch check out the Virtual Spectator software. cool.
Rock on Team New Zealand and hope we can keep the cup again!
