Maths is free as in freedom, not necessarily free as in beer..
We can still communicate, replicate, use mathematic concepts freely, but i guess at some point maths blends with programing and computing which doesnt share the same freedom. it's a dangerous trend seeing genes and what not being patented..
i hope we dont one day loose the ability to freely express mathematical concepts..

We are probably never going to have an (earth based) computer that is able to compute 10^60 diffierent possibilities, given that the earth has less atoms and electrons than that (http://pages.prodigy.net/jhonig/bignum/qaearth.html). Assuming that each of the computed possibilities is expressed(stored/presisted) by at least 1 electron. Its probably at least a few orders of magnitude more now..
"A police audit has found that about 20 percent of email capacity was taken up with pornographic images, and 300 officers are under investigation for having pornography on work computers. "
now, perhaps monitoring software could have at least prevented the email exchange of porn, would have made it a whole lot less embarrassing for the police!
so does "scientists and researchers only" include GNU/linux repositories? traditionally universities tend to have contributors to linux and often host mirrors.
Imagine, a new distro, once uploaded on one university site, could spread across the country in literally no time at all!
For people who genuinely enjoy their work, games are just going to be distraction..
This preliminary study being conducted at a Insurance firm, may infact be bringing out the fact that the workers were bored... and (therefore) easily entertained by simple games.
Besides they havent really mentioned how productivity was measured, the fact that people 'feel better' about their job, although important, doesnt corelate with productivity/bottom line stuff.
IBM's server-based IP telephony platform will run on Linux and provide gateways for connection to the public switched telephone network (PSTN)
If the IBM software is affordable/GPLd, this could mean another jump in the popularity of GNU/linux! oh.. n that VoIP thing too..
During my medical training when I was doing time at the neonatology unit at one of the hospitals. I was suprised/shocked to see that one of the ventilators was running a version of windows. Ok, I figured must be a specially designed cut down, more stable version, but then I looked carefully.. and beside the start button was the quick launch tool bar with an icon for internet explorer and media player - that is just plain scarry! would you trust MS with your neonates life?
Thankfully, for the few weeks i was there I never came across anyone complaining bout it. I cant seem to find it on the web, I might have to go back and see what the model and brand was...
The excel tool looks pretty cool so i opened it up under openoffice and tried the following values:
Intenal desktop: 20 Home desktop: 1 users: 20 Sites: 1 Years of propriety upgrade: 3
Cost of propietory works out to be: 48,364 for the fist year. Cost of FOSS (1st yr): 40,462
Now the shocking big: Total cost of migration for the first year: 4,095,925 (thats 4 million euros!!) for 20 computers! [hardware:10,925; Software: 2480000, People:160500]
re implanted heparin, well if the person had a haemorrhagic stroke or ended up somehow bleeding (eg. accident/injury) things will be a lot harder to control. Especially, if the impact of an accident dislodges and damages this device causing an unintentional infusion - making 'em bleed further.
btw, what would you choose, a pill you need to take regularly or have an injection with a reasonable sized needle.. humm.. maybe i'm just needle phobic
n yeah, the use of the microchip is poorly explained, wonder if it can alter the dosage delivered or even better monitor the coagulability (APTT) of the patients blood and accordingly alter the dosage - that would be cool!
As long as you got an ISA slot your sweet. I think it must be coming upto almost 10 years, and to think that the 16bit, stereo audio at 44khz is still all i need!
Well, The beta cant be downloaded cause it says that the beta program is full (FAQ).
The LiveCD - do you have the link to where you can download it from? I cant find anywhere on the sunsite.
re Crippled: To quote the guy who wrote the article
The functionality of the system is somewhat limited because it is a demo... The only problem I have with the Live CD is that I cannot install the Star Office 7 product to demo it (it takes more space than is allocated for the install in demo mode)
If they wanted some serious market penetration, they should have released it under a similar license to the 'Free Solaris Binary License' which allowed free downloads of the x86 Solaris 8 isos. That would instantly make them a serious desktop OS contender.
While it is good to see Sun embracing linux, isnt it still trying to run things using, what seems like a closed source model?
I mean whats with the crippled liveCD? is even the Live CD going to be available for free public download?
This makes me wonder about how much of the CD is actually GPL? All of the additional bits that sun has added probably arent opensource. How long before we see unofficial ISOs of the GPL'd portion?
With wine slllloooowly maturing, i wonder if we'r going to start seeing more of the windows viruses affecting linux computers? And as someone else has pointed out.. loosing the ~ directory is bad enough..
This sorta stuff has got to be a good indicator of how well wine works: http://appdb.codeweavers.com/appview.php?appId=277

Perhaps quantum computing may change that?

when has popular opinion counted for anything..
Linux usage is bound to rise irrespective of the popular opinion, mostly because it only ever seems to get better..

yeah, i've encountered this name and wondered how to pronounce it.. I tend to pronounce it 'ning' (rhyming with 'ping')..
So Ng is pronounced like 'ngg', how exactly is that pronounced? is it similar to 'Negh', cause thats how i would pronounce ngg?
please enlighten me!

Either way its the lazy sys-admin, who didnt apply the patch that results in the system being affected,.
How often does a system get compromised, between the time that the vulnerability is publicised and a patch is released?
