I see a noticable lack of the one true comic(tm)

Re:HELLO GENTLEMAN
It sounded to me like something that could've originated from Pokey the Penguin (http://www.yellow5.com/pokey/), but evidently it isn't.

No-Resources Entertainment
Lots of entertainment media (and other "information" creation fields) have come to the point where people can create and publish their work with almost no cost (other than their time).
More and more, I'm finding that I prefer the "freeware" work of these hobbyists more than the commercial stuff. cf. linux, thousands of artists at mp3.com, etc....!
Comics, in particular, need almost no capital to produce. So why do we think we need a way for comic artists to get paid? If the author doesn't think his work and the happiness it creates is worth his time (without the money), why should we think it's worthwhile either? Therefore, I'm ok with letting them die along with lots of other old media. As for me, I'll stick with pokey the penguin and untitled.gif

POKEY HAS NOT BEEN GONE!While it's true that THE AUTHORS haven't been updating their page as regularly as they used to, there have still been semiregular updates of the strip for the year or so I've been following it.
There has, however, been a major restructuring of the site, including moving archives and images to seperate servers under the
.yellow5.com domain, and the addition of an ad banner, about which I'm ambivalent. While I think THE AUTHORS deserve to be rewarded for their hard work, it's annoying to have to look at animated banners, even on pages you support (so everyone buy shirts). Also, several new Pokey-related projects are in the works:
New POKEY SHIRTS! A POKEY COMPUTER GAME, called Mutton Kombat. Unfortunately, being developed only for Mac at the current time, but ports are under discussion. If you're up to it, check out some of my personal favorites:

Time to invest...in Rambus, and then donate your new wealth to the EFF...
after buying a new car
;)
But seriously, why don't more people take advantage of an opportunity to invest in companies that do well financially, and then turn around and donate the wealth to causes that fight them? What a way to stick it to the less-socially-conscious shareholders, eh?

Re:So? They got what they deserved>I think your elitist vision of a net only accessible to the privileged educated few would be quite horrible
Why? Because we can have quality websites filled with stuff that we can appreciate?
Well, for one, nobody's forcing you to look at the low-quality websites (such as this one). Secondly, the low-quality websites may be sucking bandwidth, but if it wasn't for the
... umm... "unwashed masses" using the Internet, we wouldn't have telcos drooling to drop in new optic fiber and speed it up! Honestly man, take a step back and look at yourself. You're talking like a stereotypical technological elitist.Because rather than having to pander to corporate whims we can design the web to suit us?
Who is 'us'? You can design your web to suit yourself, just don't follow any link to a site you haven't checked for 'Nostalgia Compliance' (tm)
What about this fills you with such fear?
Well, the thought of someone as closed-minded as you dictating what should and shouldn't be on the web.
Hehe... or I could have skipped the rebuttal and just called you a Fascist. On second thought -
Fascist!

Pokey
I hope this is a deliberate reference to Pokey the Penguin.
-
The WinchipActually, the Winchip was an all-purpose X86 chip that gives decent performance for its cost. And it runs incredibly cool - you don't even really need a fan (I use one just to be extra-safe)
...Winchips have found a home in the I-Opener, as some others have mentioned, but also in the hearts of those of us who'd otherwise buy Cyrix (another decent brand if you're willing to trade performance for money...)
It's a Winchip that's currently powering fojar, hatelife, and yellow5.

Re:Minus One... FlameFor one site where this doesn't seem to be the case, check out hatelife.org. A lot of the journals are an entertaining read- most people's lives are so comically tragic, you can't help but chuckle at their woes.
I check it pretty regularly now, just for people like chickenfinger and frippy. It's funny. (better than a lame-ass user-made comic strip, anyway.. you should see what people send THE AUTHORS if you want to see real crap.)

Horray for Pokey!

Twisted sense of humourFrom the article:
Programmers live for the "aha" insights that produce breakthrough design solutions. I think this is one reason that software developers' affinity for Monty Python makes more sense than it might at first appear. Monty Python flouts social conventions using extremely unorthodox juxtapositions of elements of time and culture. The same independent, out-of-the-box thinking that gives rise to Monty Python's scripts can also give rise to the innovative technical design solutions that programmers strive for.
I wonder if this could explain the fact that programmers like Pokey the Penguin's twisted sense of humour. Nothing can be more unorthodox in juxtaposing elements of time and culture. The unexpected absurd situation seems to play an important role here.Great designers aren't satisfied merely to learn facts; they feel compelled to apply what they have learned to real-world situations. To the great designer, not applying knowledge is tantamount to not having obtained the knowledge in the first place.
This can also be related to the ability of easily cross-reference scenes and situations in movies and TV shows. For instance, I love the references in Futurama, especially the most obscure (e.g. to Ed Wood's "Bride of the Monster" in the anchovies episode :)). -

So here it is: A mirror of Slashdot (as of a week or so ago). It exists now for testing: So feel free to post comments and help test the new load balancer. For the curious, the new system has 3 http machines (P2s) and one mysql box (a dual P2) with a load balancer trying to keep everyone all equally busy. And its about time: the old setup has been really stressed out trying to keep up with everyone. Anyway, don't get to attached to any of your comments here, when we're satisfied that the new setup is stable, I'm gonna mirror over Slashdot and make the final switcheroo.( Read More... | 335 of 335 comments )

My Horrible Tale
I once was not an internet addict. I once only checked my e-mail, maybe did some ICQing, and was done for the day. But then, one spendous day, I discovered THE WONDER THAT IS POKEY THE PENGUIN. HOORAY FOR POKEY. HOORAY.
-
Bah
Personally, I put UserFriendly on the same level of humor as I do Dilbert and Doonsbury. Both are humorous, perhaps, 10% of the time. But thats
just me. Pokey had VERY STRANGE HUMOR.
User Friendly / Sluggy Freelance / Goats / etc. are entirely different from Pokey. Pokey didn't try to be a newspaper-worthy daily strip, and it never tried too hard. I can't say the same for UF or Goats, where you can tell a convoluted storyline coming a mile away.
Also, Pokey didn't feature twentysomething geeks living with talking animals/weird things. That right there set it apart from the current crop of
web comics.
I shall miss Pokey, whose insights made me laugh, cry, and, every now and then, taught me something about myself.
I'd even bookmarked my favorite Pokey cartoon. -
FreeBSD != MacOSALSO, READ MY COMIC STRIP!!!!
It is all good fun after all:) -
NUTTYX-2.2.0
I know I will probally sound like a complete fool, but what the heck is NUTTYX-2.2.0 and which 2.2pre whatever was it derived from? Other than changes to the documentation and some measures to fool uname, it would seem to be the linux kernel version 2.2 or so. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, information (well, very little) is at http://www.yellow5.com/nuttyx/. And yes, it does seem to have something to do with the ever popular Pokey the Penguin.
It compiles and runs just fine, BTW... -
Handheld players
So, does this open the handheld player market further by providing pre-built MP3 chipsets?
I'm guessing that with a bit more development, the chipset could possibly be merged with a portable CD player and become a *very* big player in the market.
I'd love to drop all the CDs I own onto a half-dozer or so CD-R's. You can't argue with convenience like that. Any comments? POKEY NOW
