That's fair. I've heard that meth labs can create powerful explosions if things go wrong and I've heard that many of the chemicals are not safe to be around and can cause serious damage to humans who are exposed to them. No idea if that's the case here (if it were exactly that you'd think they'd have said it was a meth lab, but I suppose it could be some other kind of drug) but there may be other explanations beyond bomb-making.

It is entirely possible to produce explosive compounds recreationally, without making them into anything that could be considered a bomb.

A lot of people make fireworks, not always professionally, and fireworks both require explosives and a reasonable level of competence in chemistry. They are also typically not considered bombs, and the same goes for any chemically-powered model rockets even though the chemicals involved are most definitely explosives.

Oh, and then there's dust. That explodes too...

The part that should be questioned is how anybody with a college degree in chemistry did not get taught better than to experiment with explosive chemicals in their own living space. This falls pretty firmly under the heading of things you do in a purpose-built building.

From bulk of available data, completely new, formerly unavailable data can be extracted. Correlations, statistics, trends - stuff "hidden in plain sight". Use geolocation and racial background and you can reliably predict credit capacity. Analyze shopping patterns and you can find hobbies. Finding political preferences, in particular "hesitant, open to suggestion" is definitely possible following history of likes on various articles, and sites frequented.

Of course the excuse of "misusing" here is total bullshit. Facebook constantly misuses personal information. Their app listens in while your phone is in sleep mode, to fine tune their ad suggestions,

The problem here is that most Communist revolutions end in authoritarianism. You can say they're not necessary, but you still have to explain why *most* Communist revolutions end up that way. You might want to watch this for a review of how this keeps happening over and over.

Even supposed good examples of Communism like Venezuela turned authoritarian when the oil money dried up and corruption stole the rest. Then the government learned that you can print more paper money, but you can't eat it. Yes, some of them adopt market reforms to survive with varying degrees of success, it's interesting how this gets blamed for the decline rather than people realizing that it's the government trying to figure out how to put their finger in the dike after it's already crumbling.

It's weird how a political theory that people should be made more equal consistently ends up becoming authoritarian, but it makes sense when you look at your own analogy--flies (authoritarians) are attracted to corpses (communism) and you realize that people who have stuff don't like having it taken away by governmental force, so they pretty much have to set up a strong authoritarian government to pull off their revolution.

We have to look at this from a reasonable position. It's less free as Bert64 says. But, is it really so bad? It sounds pretty awesome to me. And, as for this absurd idea that he's boycotting Bali, they're giving him advanced notice. It's not like they're going to have a surprise reflection period. If he's suggesting that because they had a planned, routine cutting of the networks that they'll be more likely to do so without advanced notice (for example to silence political opponents), that's dubious. Certainly, Indonesia would be more likely to do something like that than the USA. You don't need this event to tell you that; just common sense. I think Bert64 needs to limit his travel to a lot less places than just everywhere but Bali if an absolute guarantee of emergency contact is that vital to him.
