Okay, I can't shut up. He's the other half.
Mike is a smart guy. I like him. But watch him blow his own foot off and gnaw upon the bloodied remains starting at about 7m50 into the following presentation:
Text By the Bay 2015: Mike Tung, Turning the Web into a Structured Database
"What about this frontal lobe?"
He wants to tackle this "next" project by some loose, unspecified analogy with recent surprising progress in computer vision and computer robotics.
Of course, how could the frontal lobe be different than dedicated perceptual and motor lobes?
If this is the standard—and this is by no means unusual among even the smartest people in the field—accurate prediction of forward progress will continue to be a cheque in the mail until the end of freaking time.

Re:I miss software that works.
In between 5.25" and 3.5" floppies - I had both in my machine when I decided to migrate my data to 3.5". No problem - after all my 5.25" floppies were copied over, I retired the lot. Programs were in BASIC to begin with - which was directly translatable (as long as you weren't poking and peeking memory locations - in which case you also had to do a bit of integration/modification work to make it edible by the new hardware). As the years moved on, and DOS and Windows, and then other binary formats took hold - the strategy turned to emulators or virtual machines as the solution. I have VMs running Windows and DOS that I use to run binaries for those old applications and games.
As for data, early on I decided that I wanted to keep critical files in a common format that I knew would be readable in the future. I started off with ASCII - and had no problems moving files from one machine to the next in that format, then I moved to
.RTF format. Today I've taken that a step further and new files are kept in XML format. In any case, I have files from my early years still readable today.Vint Cerf has been championing the idea of 'Digital Vellum' - technologies to preserve our software and data for the future so data doesn't loose meaning because there is no machine to run its program on - what he refers to as the Digital Dark Age. Here is Mr. Cerf talking about it on youtube, and here is a document and abstract on the concept.

Re:Hey GM, how about that EV1?
Indeed, Elon talked about building-out customer support infrastructure in the recent quarterly "investor call." This is one of the reasons why they won't be paying any stock dividends in the foreseeable future. They need those revenues to build-out the infrastructure you describe.
My point is, they seem to be aware of the challenges you raise, and are devoting significant resources toward meeting them.
PS: I like your
.sig.. it looks vaguely familiar. ;-) -
Re:Hey GM, how about that EV1?
Yep. Eventually we will go all electric - or electric in some form from some kind of energy cell.
The adoption of EVs may go faster than most of us expect. I recommend folks take a look at Clean Disruption by Tony Seba. (Watch his lecture here if you prefer video.) He begins with a photo of 5th Avenue in NYC, Easter Sunday, 1900. The street is packed with horse drawn vehicles, but there is one "horseless carriage" visible (if you squint really hard). Next he shows a photo of the same spot, same day, in 1913. The street is packed with Model-T Fords, with only one horse visible (if you squint even harder).
Then he shows some data on the falling price of battery storage, solar PV panels, computing power, etc., and predicts where these secular trends will lead in the next several years. Though the book was published in 2014, his prediction that mid-range, "affordale" EVs ($35k) would come to market around 2017-18 has already come true, ahead of schedule. He then predicts that low-range ($20k) EVs will become available by 2022. At that point, there is no economic reason to buy a gasoline car. (EVs are a fraction of the cost per mile, and their "regular maintenance" is little more than fresh tires and wiper blades.)
In a nutshell, he says the current energy and transportation system will be obsolete by 2030.
Tesla doesn't make a profit and hasn't.
Tesla earns a 25% markup on every car they sell. The only reason they don't "make a profit" is because they reinvest all that revenue into new infrastructure. When CNBC talking heads whine about Tesla not posting profits, what they really mean is that Tesla is not paying dividends yet.
Well, boo-hoo... If you want a stock that pays good dividends, there are plenty on the market. Go buy some. If you want to make a long-term investment in the future, and are not looking for a quick ROI, then Tesla makes more sense.

Re:We need more H1B's* to fill the gaps
So global statistics show population growth is slowing even though we're still growing population faster than ever because population won't really stop growing until it stops growing?
No. Global statistics show that the annual total number of births has been steadily declining since the late 80s. Population is growing only because the global population skews young, and we're in the process of filling out the age groups. Hans Rosling explained it very well in this TED talk: https://www.youtube.com/watch?...

Re:Racism is something different
As an anecdote to #3, I heard news articles saying that the local Imam in Florida was calling for death to gays before the nightclub attack. Are such overt calls for violence protected as free speech or freedom of religion, or should we make certain exceptions?
So it's ok if a Christian preacher does the same thing, but if an Imam does it it's bad?
If a white Christian says something vile, it's just them exercising their right to free speech. If a brown Muslim does the same, the world is ending.

1) Does anyone have strong statistical evidence that the problem is Islam, and not a different common feature?
2) Would it make sense to bar entry to the US from certain world areas?
3) Would it make sense to put Muslims under enhanced scrutiny domestically?

And political correctness is not defined as everything that disagrees with the right. There is plenty of political correctness (aka. political dogma that cannot be questioned) on the right wing as well. Now, see how I managed to get that point across without screaming?

Re:BASIC
Kids today don't seem to appreciate 8-bit machines quite like previous generations.
Actually, watching that video, I think that the kids are reacting the same way that we reacted in the 1980's. Did you notice the part in the video where they type their names just to see them printed on the screen? That's exacly what we did back in the 1980's. From there, we would progress to filling the entire screen with characters to create ASCII art. And from there, we would begin writing small programs...

Re:something to think about
No, it just goes to show that when you align yourself with either party, you're not going to get any real change in your politics. You're the one that just made it a binary choice. I pointed out that both parties do it because they're the ones in power and they know people like you will continue with the same pattern.
Nope, its a classic diversion tactic, used to good effect by Kellyanne Conway. Anytime asked a question she deflects it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?... without answering the question.
I don't give a fuck if the Democrats used the tactic. I don't care if they installed a supreme court justice that mandated abortions for all. Perhaps this is it backfiring on them Maybe, maybe not. But what I am saying is that it will indeed backfire on the Republican party. Do you deny this? Are teh Democrats just going to roll over and play dead? Or are you one of those people like Republican moral leader Trent Lott, who is the architect of the permanent Republican majority> Times change, and the Republicans like to remind us tht they are the party of the moral high ground. It's too bad that they decided to railroad a nominee through that had solid opposition.
Now I'm certain you will claim this is fake news, but the party of the moral high ground did have an issue with the Kenyan terror baby's appointments.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...
Now tell me how many the Evil demoncrats wrested judicial appointments from the Republicans. I would imagine you can prove that all of them were installed by the democrats. I gave you a citation, Now give me the citations that the Democrats used the nuclear option or other malfeasance on Republican nominees.
In other words, show me that the democrats did the same thing. You said they did, I'm certain you have the evidence to prove it. In 2016 there was a 10 percent vacancy rate in federal judge vacancies, I dunno, you figure that the Democrats didnt name any? They were blocked.
Is it a good idea to block appointments then fill them with your own parties hand picked? when you have the chance to railroad them through? Hard to imagine when you have the moral high ground that you would need to do that.

Re:BASIC
Kids today don't seem to appreciate 8-bit machines quite like previous generations. I learned to program a Sinclair ZX81 in assembler because I could read BASIC faster than its interpreter. I got it to count to 65536 in less than a second which was so amazing that I was bragging to all the other kids. They thought I was lying.

Re:Maybe not what it seems...
They probably aren't on the internet; most of these sirens are radio-activated. If you have a big enough transmitter and know what to send, you're good to go. Much like the Emergency Alert System, security is being retro-fitted as an afterthought in the form of signed control messages. But the rest of your point is on target, the designers unfortunately decided to rely on obscurity (the frequency, the message format and contents, etc.) to secure these things. Until they've all been upgraded, we'll have to put up with the occasional zombie warning or tornado sirens going off at random.

Re:On Slashdot 15 Years Ago...
Good one! I have never heard about this ETC3 Global Alliance company, but apparently they are closely related to Hyperloop. In July 2013, Elon promised to invest in their prototype and, one month later, "the outline of the original Hyperloop concept was made public"! Isn't this curious?
Their site is still up and contains lots of information which some people might want to read like history/expectations and licenses (they sell you the right to participate in the development of their intellectual property!).
Without even coming into the technical aspects of Hyperloop, its feasibility and motivation/expectations (as highlighted in one of my previous comments here, this video summarises quite well my ideas on this front), the exact relationship between this company and Hyperloop is interestingly unclear. -

Do you really need to get to full vacuum or even close to it ?
They need to get to 1/1000 atm which is a pretty significant vacuum. Here is a video of ~1/10 atm. Notice it took ten minutes to get down to that higher pressure.
-
Re:Houston-New Orleans-Austin
How hard of a vacuum do you think they're trying to pull?
1/1000th atm is pretty significant vacuum. Take a look at how long it takes to pump out a volume to the same pressure comparable to a what a hyper loop air lock would need. Remember this video is sped up. Also the presence of the pod will lower the conductance of the air significantly.

X-33 was going to use an Aerospike engine
The Lockheed X-33 Single Stage to Orbit Vehicle Skunk Works team was making identical claims back in the mid 90's.
They blew through $1 Billion before grinding to a halt when their carbon fiber oxygen tank delaminated during testing. Their budget was so tight, that a single setback like that one killed the project. They considered ditching CF in favor of an aluminum oxygen tank but the added weight didn't leave enough for any significant payload.
Perhaps this group has better carbon fiber manufacturing skills than Lockheed's Skunk works did back then and they'l be able to make good or perhaps it's just a "let's find some rubes and fleece them" scheme.
Time will tell.
Side story. I took a group of middle school students to Palmdale to see the X-33 chassis that was then under construction. It was the first time any of us had seen anything made with Carbon Fiber. The engineer giving us the tour handed us a CF strut to pass around and said "Carbon fiber is very light and much stronger than steel. It'll take a lot of abuse." When the strut was handed to this one particular kid, he started banging on it to see how much abuse it would take. The kid's mother freaked out while the engineer laughed it off and said "send him to work for us when he graduates. We need his kind of thinking."
The strut survived the kid's abuse.

Re:Revolutionary Rocket aka aerospike engine
After watching a video of this engine fire, I kept looking for some kind of variable geometry component and didn't see it. It turns out there isn't one. The thrust pattern itself changes shape as a function of altitude to achieve the extra efficiency. This promotional video from Rocketdyne shows how it works.

End the secrecy, problem goes away
Wage disparity would end almost overnight if we got rid of this ridiculous notion that wages should be a secret. If you knew what everyone else was being paid you'd immediately know if you were getting the short end of the stick. It would be obvious if there was any systemic bias in wages.
Really, why wouldn't you want your peers to know what you make? The only reasons I can only think of are, "I might be getting paid too little and they'd all think less of me if they knew", or "I might be getting paid too much and they'd take it away from me to make it fair".
Keeping it a secret only benefits unscrupulous employers. The ones who will give you a low starting offer and low raises on the grounds that you'll never really know how much better you could be doing if you went elsewhere.
