It is just bizarre that studios would put so much money into the making and marketing of these movies without ensuring that they follow basic fundamentals of narratives / characterization in cinema. Zack Snyder is definitely obsessed with visuals over storytelling.
Somewhere in the writing process they forgot to make the protagonist likable. This analysis (one of the best that I've watched) points out how we don't connect with the heroes because they don't have believable motivations and they do not make any choices that show them to be interesting heroes.
Another analysis by the same reviewer pointed out how those movies are lacking in compelling villains. -

The maybe best solution ever I've seen in Austria. Here is a quick comparison between US vs. Austrian traffic lights.
It should be noted that Austrian drivers are far better trained and disciplined than their American counterparts.
The problem isn't the light sequences, the problem is the mentality that thinks "yellow light means gun it" and "fuck anyone else as long as I get through".Basically, their lights flash green 5 times before they go to yellow, giving you ample time to know that the green period ends. Also, before switching to green, it shows red and yellow for about a second or two to give you an idea that you should put your car into gear and prepare to accelerate, thus improving the reaction time of people and improving the usage of the green phase.
All in all, a WAY better solution. Of course their law also says that there is ZERO grace period for entering with a red light. You have ample time to know it's going red. Actually, I don't even know whether there isn't already some kind of provision that you're supposed to not enter when it goes yellow.
The thing is, whether this works depends entirely on the attitude of the driver.
In Thailand traffic lights often have counters that indicate the time to the next change (no amber lights on these intersections). However the local mentality is that you can go for the first 3-5 seconds of Red and you can start to proceed on the last 3-5 seconds on red. This kind of attitude means that 24,000 people die on Thai roads a year or 36.2 per 100,000 pop, almost 3.5 times the United states with 10.6 per 100,000 pop and over 12 times the UK numbers at 2.9 per 100,000 pop (Austria is 5.4).
The lights here in the UK flash amber before green, this is a sign to most motorists to put the vehicle in gear and prepare to move off and by and large works quite well. However I'm originally from Australia and with the attitude of Australian drivers the UK system would only increase traffic accidents as you get two types of drivers at a traffic light, the one that misses it because they're on their phone and the one that's on their horn exactly 0.00001 second after it turns green.
Point in short, to make the Austrian or UK system work, you need disciplined and responsible drivers like you get in Austria or the UK. -

Exactly. Its a situation where the weather is pretty good, lots of sunshine, OK soil, but not much water. Then we have the river diversion issues. Already the Colorado no longer reaches the sea. Most impressive to stop that river.
If I had a say in how water use in California is handled, I'd say you start with the Sunshine. That's not likely to go away any time soon. So that's good. But the next issue is that water. It has to be used better, and more efficiently. I'm seeing a lot of farming under glass, so to speak. If you are going to use water, you have to meter it out and limit evaporation. If you are going to ship water from another state, you need to keep the damn stuff covered. Interesting that she did note the observed effect of "devaluation" (as more women move into the field, both the wage discrepancy *AND* the wages decrease). Presumably this is similar to the effect of right-to-work law changes on union jobs strongholds, right? Which is not really that different than the H1b discussion.
I'm not trying justifying discrimination, but just observing that apparently the laws of economics don't give a rats ass about what basis discrimination occurs. Discrimination will help some and hurts others, but if the goal is to end discrimination, then to help others, you must hurt some. The net economic result may be higher, but probably not high enough so in the end somebody has to lose... Generally, some of those won't want to lose, so expect friction. Hopefully this is obvious.

Kung Fury review and movie. If a single person with a small budget from Kickstarter can do that, then Hollywood should be orders of magnitude better. As it is, I found this more entertaining than the latest Iron Man or other Marvel stuff. I may just have questionable taste, but while this is a cheap and cheesy feature, it also quite clever--the whole thing is a parody of movie tropes, doesn't take itself seriously, and ticks a large number of boxes.

I blame the low-brow entirely formulaic dross that Hollywood continues to churn out.
I don't think that logic works. That would make sense if we were talking about older audiences who have basically seen all these movies before. But the young people who haven't already been exposed to all the plots and archetypes might still want to go see them.
I am not interested in movies (I watch few of them even at home) because they are all the same old shit I've seen before. Most of them are literally just remakes of the same old films, often with the same old title. A new director with essentially the same script. Why would I want to see that? At least make some different books into movies.
Hollywood is going down the toilet. They are still huge so it will take a long time unless LA falls into the ocean, but I've been keeping my fingers crossed for that one for a long time and it still hasn't happened. They will be able to hang on with superhero movies for a while yet, but their dominance is shaking.

One of the things about QM is that it is such a horribly complicated mess, mathematically - GR, relatively speaking, is simple: it's just differential geometry, give or take a few bits (not that it isn't hard enough, though). QM is so full of things that have the look and feel of rules-of-thumb or patches to repair holes in the theory, and the maths is still running to catch up. Just to be clear, only a small fringe of the scientific community thought global cooling was happening _quickly_, at least by human standards.
Many more will agree that we are in an inter-glacial period and that if things continue as they are (which seems increasingly unlikely) we will enter another ice age... in 25,000 - 50,000 years. Which is fairly soon on a geologic scale but not exactly an immediate concern on a human scale.

Seems to me that you must be unaware of Godel's Incompleteness Theorem. Without checking the references I am aware that around 1931 he proved that no logical system of sufficient complexity can actually capture the notion of "truth". Gross oversimplification, but I'd recommend Godel, Escher, Bach if you're sincerely interested in the topic. Or even Godel's original paper.
