Re:Doesn't matter
The standoff that happened in Nevada between people and federal agents could be used as an example. We had a senate majority leader who used his platform to call these angered and disenfranchised Americans 'domestic terrorists' even as a fenced pen labeled '1st amendment zone' was erected in the middle of the desert. The hateful and vitriolic sentiments coming from both sides was astonishing.
Now, with President Trump it is another attempt at 'Hope and Change'. Once it becomes clear that peaceful revolution is impossible, all bets are off. -

Yes, Prof. Peterson's got some seriously flawed views on gender. He's also got some great knowledge on social psychology, fascism, the role of speech and violence in society, and the harm of excessive compassion. He's got some great thoughts on how the current social policies towards gender actually can exacerbate the problems facing LBGTQ people and send society into authoritarianism, fascism, and violence.
Prof. Peterson says that the point of free speech is to get the boneheaded ideas and opinions out in the open so they can be corrected through dialogue and conversation. But his opponents boycott debate and play noise during a rally about free speech:

When this attitude is taken towards a large group of people, most go into the closet. Their views simmer and become anger. And then, they go out and vote--and everyone wonders where the "crazy Trump supporters" came from.
By being so sure that we're right and harassing those who disagree with us (see: Brendan Eich), you activate authoritarianism:

You don't want authoritarian leaders. It can get very ugly very fast. Stop persecuting those who disagree with you, even if you know they're wrong. Engage them in conversation and show them how they're wrong. Don't silence them. Don't harass them. Haven't we learned anything from Martin Luther King Jr.?
Personally, I agree with the parent. The definition of bigot is "a person who is intolerant toward those holding different opinions." When I watch the rallies between Prof. Peterson (trying to engage in conversation) and those who oppose him (silencing him and working to get him fired)... it's pretty clear who is intolerant.

Re:Do Or Do Not

Re:You can't
Is it really the end goal of the US government to prevent people from voting?
Yes. It is fairly well established the more people vote the more likely it is an incumbent will not be re-elected. In fact, one of the founders of the Heritage Foundation has stated he doesn't want everyone to vote.
If you have followed U.S. politics in the last decade you will have noticed a concerted effort by Republicans to make it more difficult for people to vote. The excuse is there's rampant voter fraud going on yet with the exception of a few isolated cases, they have never shown this "rampant" fraud.
Which brings us full circle to the issue at hand. In my area the Republican-led districts have gone ahead with these electronic voting machines which have no way to verify votes are being correctly recorded. When asked about this issue their response has been, more or less, "Computers don't make mistakes".
Which is funny because if they're claiming voter fraud how do they know it's going on if one can't verify the vote being cast? -
Re:Why won't Democrats support the outcome?
It has been proven. It just gets ignored because voter fraud, en masse, generally goes in favor of Democrats. That's because Democratic personnel literally take part in doing it (literally a video of one admitting to it while being secretly filmed; no charges brought). My area alone went from supporting Obama 59%, to Hillary 65% -- with greater turnout -- in an election where Hillary got noticeably less support; worse, my area heavily caters to defense spending, which makes it even less likely that there would be significant increase in Hillary support (given her transgressions with classified material that would land ordinary citizens in jail; this is actually recognized by those of us in the community as a big deal).
At my own voting station, I literally passed a bus bringing people to vote. The nice part of me says: that's nice that people are not being disenfranchised, but at the same time, I wonder how many people are on the bus because they want to be versus they were offered something to be on there.
Voting is a chore, but it's one you're supposed to want to do because if you cannot be bothered to do it, then there's not much reason to listen to you (and it's unlikely that you're informed). But, for some reason, it's okay to literally bribe and push people to vote, so long as they're Democrats. It's actually for this reason that I think it's too easy to vote early as well; if you cannot be bothered to vote on the day, with some hardships excepted (like working, schooling, or deploying in a different state/country during the election), there really shouldn't be many reasons that you can vote early.

Re:Careful?
Frankly, I'd say if you trust the ingredients list "at face value" for almost any product, you're likely to be deceived.
Where I live, the ingredients list is legally required to contain the ingredients listed on the packet... in order of quantity, largest to smallest.
Yes, companies have been fined before for ignoring this law, in fact there are government organisations set up for the express purpose of finding companies who are lying on their packaging. This is how we found the Tesco horse meat scandal.
If the situation is different in your country, that's your problem to deal with.Sorry to be the cynic here, but it wouldn't surprise me if many "natural" products are slightly diluted versions of the same chemical crap sold for a much different price,
Here I agree.
However not much can be done as it's not dangerous or even that deceptive. The same as "Organic". Because natural and organic have very vague definitions, there are no requirements for government certification with these labels. "Organic" is any product containing organic molecules, likewise in Australia, for products, the legal definition of "natural" is any product made using natural processes (yes, the definition of the word references itself). As it's not dangerous, it's not really any of the governments business though.
So absolutely terms like "natural" and "organic" are abused to market more expensive products, absolutely are many of these "natural" and "organic" products are the same as their unbranded counterparts and absolutely the only difference is that the "natural" one costs a few $ more...
But it's an exercise of caveat emptor, not under-regulation.

Maybe someone presented climate change to him as a jihadist terror plot. I can't wait to hear him repeat the phrase "radical Islamic climate change"
;)I am reminded of a uhf clip.
Seriously I know I should try to understand the Americans that voted for bombastic monkey child, but I just can't. The five year con for the racist fringe was a disqualifier right then and there and there were so many others.
People need to get the hell off of facebook and fact free zones and actually try to do what is good for the country the next election. Good grief we did this twice now. Sure Gore was boring, but guess what you put in Bush and got 9/11, partly because they weren't on the ball. Gore may have been boring, but he was competent. It was the same with Clinton.
Let's think about this:
Clinton/Bush
Bush2/Gore
Bush2/Kerry
Obama/Mccain
Obama/Romney
Trump/ClintonIn the first you have I think similar competance, but clinton wins on charisma. In the second you have bush 2 likely winning on the you can drink a bear with/down to earth versus actual competence. That applies to Bush2/Kerry as well. Then you have Obama McCain. I think if McCain had chosen a different running mate, and if the economy wasn't cratering that could have gone either way, though it should have probably gone to McCain for experience. Next up is Obama/Romney. Obama's extra 4 years probably brings them up to the requisite experience, but Obama wins on charisma. Finally you have Trump/Clinton. Trump has charisma in spades. He has no morals whatsoever I can see, and will say anything to win, including fishing for racist votes, which is what that whole birther thing seems to have been a long term plan for. He also doesn't seem to have the right experience, but he wins, if barely over someone with decades of the right experience and a perfect resume.
It's like saying, um we have a PhD here with a long track record at doing very similar jobs well, but let's instead go hire the orange bombastic monkey child.
Seriously is America capable of choosing competence over boring? It doesn't seem to be possible.

Agree. On top of that, in Australia we often are charged more for digital content than other countries. It's insane to be overcharged when in the Aus iTunes store when you can grab a US account and get the same content for cheaper. The next big thing on smart phones.
I recently wrote an App for a company that's building AI models of organic and non-organic substances.
The App works over bluetooth with a pocket sized, battery powered, NIR spectrum analyser made by Texas Instruments.
TI DLP® NIRscan NanoThis technology will be the next big thing on smart phones which are crying out for something new to revitalise the market.
Pick a time frame. I'd go for 5->7 years from now that right next to the camera on all smart phones we'll see an NIR scanner.Imagine being able to scan anything and get a report of it's contents and make up?
Fake, or out of date pharmaceuticals, will be a thing of the past.
Nut allergy? Scan the meal you've just be served before eating it.
Consumer products like Aloe Vera Gel not containing Aloe Vera? Your phone can tell you that it's a fraud.
The list of applications is endless. Here's a demo video of the App identifying real and fake viagra pills.

But why bother?
I know I am an extreme case, probably, but I reallly can't imagine why I would want to pay for a thing like Netflix in any form. I think it has been years since I watched any entertainment programme and enjoyed it - actually, that isn't true, there is something called "Have I got news for you" on BBC, which is occasionally intelligently witty, but it's been a while since I watched it. But if people around here really are interested in sciency/techy stuff, there are several good collections on youtube, such as:

Both are very entertaining, and the latter is the gentlest introduction to tensor calculus I have ever come across. Really nice, far better than "Batman - The Dark Tosser Returns" or whatever.

Re:WTF?!?!?
A good chunk of the exclusion zone is to the southeast of the reactor. The winds on the day of the accident were primarily to the northwest. Radiation levels in the southern portion of the zone are only slightly higher than natural background, and about the same as some of the more naturally radioactive cities on Earth. Most people don't realize that Ukraine's capitol of Kiev is only about 100 km southeast of Chernobyl.
Some elderly people have been allowed to move back into this portion of the zone, but it's still kept part of the exclusion zone out of an abundance of caution. I think it should be kept undeveloped because this is a great experiment on the long-term effects of a nuclear accident on wildlife (both flora and fauna), and the results could be very insightful for determining the effects of radiation on humans. There's very little data on long-term exposure to low levels of radiation. Right now we simply take the effects of high doses of radiation on people, and extrapolate it as a straight line down to zero assuming that if a lot is bad, then a little is also bad. The early research coming out of the Chernobyl exclusion zone seems to contradict this. Slightly elevated levels of radiation actually seem to make animals healthier than normal background radiation (though it could just be that they're not bothered by people). (source) -
Re:Looking in the mirror are you?
America is doing just fine thanks. Trump just released a video saying what he will be doing, so you don't have to wonder or believe what a bunch of media guys who detest him CLAIM he will do.
Among them:
TPP cancelled. Enjoy whatever country you are in joining that!
Maybe a good thing, maybe a bad thing. Depends what takes its place.
More shale production - vast reduction in CO2. We are doing our part, how about your nation?
Natural gas is fine but shale oil isn't exactly environmentally friendly, if I recall it takes a lot of processing to turn into usable oil.
And it's funny how you left out the "clean coal" part just after that. Trump is going to try to bring back coal, the worst energy source we have for CO2, it doesn't mean he'll succeed but he'll try.
Two regulations have to be removed for every new one created - while you strangle as regulations pile up.
And if you don't have enough you get the 2008 financial crisis. If you do it well sure that's good, but that sounds a bit like a spin on the classic "I'll reduce government waste!" promise, it ignores the factors that created that waste in the first place.
Ethics reform - five year ban on administration officials becoming lobbyists, can never lobby for foreign nations. I wonder how cozy corporations are to YOUR government...
Sounds good, but Trump's transition team is already loaded with lobbyists and corporate bigwigs, so I'm skeptical of its sincerity.
Investigation of visa program abuses (read: companies bringing in lots of foreign programmers and then severely underpaying them as they hold the green card over them).
Sounds good.
Energy grid to be hardened against attacks. As your countries power grid fails over the coming decade you can think back on this as you are sitting in the cold with a flashlight...
A good idea... but why would you assume no one else is hardening their energy and network infrastructure?
The funny thing is many of these items (like TPP being cancelled, or visa abuse) were once darlings of the Slashdot liberals. But now that Trump supports them... well I guess they decided fascism is better than Trump? Oh well.
He's not being criticized for the things he said above, hell, half the things he said above are pretty much things he's emphasizing for the first time.
The problem is all of the things he said and promised on the campaign trail. The problem is all the alt-right figures he's bringing into the white house that have literal white nationalists rejoicing. The problem is the fact that he's already using his position as president-elect to increase his personal wealth.

4k on 2560x1440 and 1080p monitors
4k looks night and day different on a 1080p monitor compared to a normal 1080p blueray. When downsampled, the picture looks more detailed.
There are some 4k nature demos on youtube, using chrome you can test multiple resolutions, 4k/2k/1080 on your monitor and test for yourself the difference.
4k sampled down, I can see higher detail in the water compared to a 2k resampled. Check out the Nature Relaxation channel to check out its demo videos, they are watermarked, but make great test videos.I saw a video blog that said the reason that 4k on a 1080p looks so well, is the 4 pixel blocks downsampled are no longer sharing chroma, but each pixel is independent, so the higher detail. (I'm recalling from memory, so forgive me if I'm wrong).
I have a 2560x1400, and 4k looks great even it. So people who say you can see a difference, really need to try some of those 4k youtube videos on chrome.

Can I have a cookie?
No, you can't.Oops, "can't" apparently means "no, legally I can not" according to you.
It could just be that Obama meant: "I can't (in good conscience) pardon somebody who hasn't gone before a court and presented themselves, so that's not something that I would comment on at this point."
This is how we ended up with a guy who tried to claim that a certain argument depended on the definition of the word "is".

Not sure what you are referring to, but feel free to watch the testimony of James Comey before congress. He basically lays out all of the facts around Hillary Clinton's criminal acts, and then ascribes a requirement to the law governing classified material (namely intent) where there is no such requirement. After laying out a very damning case, Comey says that no prosecutor would take the case. There are hundreds if not thousands of prosecutors in this country who have said they could easily get a conviction based on the evidence found by Comey.

Re:Finalize with a dealer, screw that
Can anyone explain to a foreigner why is it such a pain to buy a car in the US?
Because of history, really.
A car dealership is supposed to be like a store for cars. You know, like you used to visit the grocery store for groceries, you go to the car dealership for cars. And this was how it was in the late 19th and early 20th century.
Then what happened is the car manufacturers decide to try direct sales, which put a lot of dealerships out of business because they cut out the middleman. Since this put people out of work, politicians enacted laws preventing such sales as being predatory.
Nowadays, those laws have been modified to ensure that dealerships MUST be involved in every new car transaction, given the relative power (dealerships are rich, and they have shoveled a lot of money at politicians.
And in this modern era, well, you know. The following YouTube video really details the dirty details.

Re:Self-brainwashing versus censorship?
Well, there isn't any such thing as unbiased news. There's just news that wears its bias on its sleeve. I just today started watching Alex Jones and Infowars. I always thought he was a crank weirdo, but if they're trying to ban him, then WTF? Obviously he is saying something they want to suppress, something harmful to globalism. I've got to find out for myself what the big deal is.
I've just scratched the surface but Elites Panic As Trump Begins To Deliver was an eye-opener. Big megabanks are tax-exempt? I had no idea. Hearing him tell big city liberals "What anti-human nasties, you really are." 100% true. But the kicker, what you'll never hear anyone in the liberal media say: "Find out yourself, and learn what they're doing to you and your family!" DAMN that's some powerful stuff.
It's an exciting new world. Watch that one video I linked above and see what it does for you. IF - and this is a big IF - Trump makes sustainable improvements to the inner cities, the Democratic Party is dead.ï Good luck in your quest for truth, and always remember if the MSM tells you not to listen to someone, then always do the exact opposite!
