Re:Meh. Take the Trump approach.
Many parts of Hillary's evil have been well documented. She's a nasty person devoid of scruples, dedicated primarily to the acquisition of money and power. Trump is awful, Hillary is vile.
Okay, just for fun, name the worst thing Hillary has done that has been documented and proven?
The worst one that comes to mind to me is staying with Bill, likely for political purposes, and defending Bill also likely for political purposes. (The bad thing is she attacked others to defend Bill, when I suspect, on some level she probably knew Bill was cheating on her. I can't prove that of course, but she is a smart woman.) The republicans at the time had Newt doing the same thing, which isn't a defense. I'm certainly not going to defend anyone for having an affair, nor for lying under oath, though I also would not defend the whole partisan impeachment mess. I do think she is, well, a pretty standard politician, and that is not really a complement save that skill might help her get something done, though I doubt it. The only way she could get anything done is probably to get a democratic controlled congress, since I can't think the republicans would actually work with her. They have spread too much hate, and would get replaced if they did.
She is, however, the best choice we have that can win the upcoming election. (I'd almost think the damage Trump would likely do worth it, if we could get something better than first pass the post voting, but that won't happen regardless, at least not this year.)
I still half wish Bernie had won. Most of his history appears guided by a set of consistent beliefs. He got a bit desperate towards the end of the campaign and some of that was just not really appropriate, but was tame compared to all this. Elizabeth Warren might have been a better choice as well. Hell, you know who I would love to have in the oval office. I'd love to have Jon Stewart in there. He knows the issues and seemed to give a damn and despite his liberal leanings, he would call out anyone if the situation called for it. He has the intelligence for the job. Sadly I'm not convinced he has the resolve for it even if by some miracle he could get enough votes.

Re:not what i expect
There are devices with a headphone socket that is sealed and waterproof
... this is not usually the entry point for water on most devices ...You mean like the not-so-water-resistant-after-all [consumerreports.org] Galaxy S7?
More like the Moto G 2015 (video), which runs $400 less.
Not bulletproof, but if the back cover is properly fastened, it's rated for IPX7. So it isn't likely to survive pressurized water, but it should survive a dunking.

Re:Joy
If we double the price of coal (or coal burning plants) and we sell at the same commission-permitted margin, we make twice the real income!
Actually yes, how about we do double the price of coal and other fossil fuels and see how much the % of energy generated from solar and wind changes?
But then there is the pesky problem of the fact that we have a lot of coal, enough to fuel the US for what, a few centuries at least? Hard to create the illusion of scarcity in that kind of marketplace.
The world coal association claims "There are an estimated 892 billion tonnes of proven coal reserves worldwide. This means that there is enough coal to last us around 110 years at current rates of production".
Notice that important stipulation at the bottom there? at current rates of production? Do you know what happens to that when you add a modest year on year increase in consumption? Please do explain how we can continue to sustain growing energy needs using fossil fuels.
Portraying greedy energy companies as being knee jerk opposed to solar or wind is absurd.
What do you mean "knee jerk"? This has been going on for decades, have you not been paying attention for the last 20 years?

Re:Two more problems with Venus
Terraforming Venus was shown back in the old Cosmos series. We humans made it rain or some such thing. Hurray! We are on our way to making another home!
The rains fell on Venus and out of the rocks emerged some sort of worm-like life form, which was promptly killed off by our helpful rain. The point the show was trying to make was that we don't understand all the consequences of doing things like that.
Actually the series was called "The Universe & I" The episode was called "Mind-Slaughter". I found it again not too long ago on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVj2mgrTtU8
It's about 20 minutes long and was certainly nostalgic to see it again.

Re:Considering that people play music
Considering that people play music with floppy drives then the ability to transfer information acoustically with hard drives isn't really different.
I wasn't aware of that, thank you for the link. I find things like that fascinating even if they aren't particularly useful.
A much bigger issue with this: if you can get this program onto the air-gapped machine in the first place, haven't you already compromised it? If I could load say, a flash drive, into the air-gapped system to run this program, why can't I just copy whatever data I was after?
Unrelated side issue: you know what's really broken about Slashdot? An AC post containing GNAA or the N-word or something like that gets downmodded in seconds (which is desirable), but lots of sincere and really informative AC posts never get modded up (which is a loss for everyone). Why the double standard? Editors have infinite mod points, so why not use them constructively? After all, I can see how someone using a work computer really wouldn't want to browse at -1. An easily offended coworker walking by and seeing a GNAA post would be really hard to explain to HR. It's a classic "guilty unless proven innocent, and even then probably still guilty" situation.

This is really the first step (pun!) towards the creation of human tanks, the next VR program will end up with people being able to control wheels, then tracks, then turrets, then the brains will be removed and added to machines....
Wait, you mean I can roll around on tank treads instead of using my own two legs like a sucker? Sign me up! Being one of the bosses from Super Smash T.V. is step #435 on my plan for world domination.
VR is about control of the populace, they will improve it to the point that we don't know whether we are in it or not and then they can start making us do what they want.
There is no spoon. Just keep taking that blue pill.
Exoskeletons are the first step towards Terminator robots - SkyNet is here, something something Singularity.
We're in luck. Stephen Colbert is already on the case there. Though I say I have to agree with one of this threatdowns. #5 is robots, #4 is bears, #3 is robots, #2 is bears and the number one threat to our nation is robot bears.

Blame the public
We used to have a much freer and diverse web until about 7 years ago. We had separate social media platforms for everything from blogging to photo sharing to music. And we had (still have) the open RSS standard to combine feeds from various sources.
And yet people voted for a monolithic, closed web with Facebook and Twitter. 2 easy chokepoints that can be shut down at a whim, as seen in Turkey with the recent coup. Even if Slashdotters personally don't use these services, the vast majority of people do, and no online business/marketing strategy is complete without involving either or both of them.
Today Facebook is a single point of failure for the average user, one place where their entire online history and interaction is available for scrutiny if the account gets hacked. The internet is fast turning into a monoculture -

The Eternal Struggle
Any public communication platform will, sooner or later, find itself at a crossroads where it must decide exactly how committed to free speech it is. A quick perusal over on Usenet or the Retroshare forums will yield plenty of generally-undesirable content, from bomb making instructions and targeted verbal abuse to racism and anti-semitism. A forum that allows truly free speech - as those networks do - will unfortunately attract those kinds of users. Twitter is stuck deciding whether it's better to start moving the line of acceptability as to limit speech 'for the greater good' (a case reasonably made for death threats and verbal abuse), but then be in charge of constantly deciding what falls on either side of that line, a task from which they will never be able to free themselves thereafter.
Users expect Twitter to filter undesirable speech. Twitter expects users to do their own filtering. Back in the Usenet and IRC days, only the latter was technologically possible, and today it is only technologically possible for Twitter to perform the filtering because they've opted to be the repository of the content - a model that can make them money, but in doing so leaves them stuck trying to decide who's being thin-skinned, who's being genuinely threatening, who's exercising their freedom of speech, and who's costing them the good will of their userbase.
This is how you deal with things you don't like on the internet. Twitter users have forgotten this.

"Things" huh? So why is it that when I look at YouTube news clips, I can see both the terribly stupid, harmful things Trump is saying, along with his defense of those things?
Barack Obama founded ISIS, and Hillary Clinton co-founded it.
"Russia, if you're listening, I hope you're able to find the 30,000 emails that missing."
"With the terrorists, you have to take out their families."
Not to mention this disgraceful interview.
How could those clips possibly be taken out of context? In each one, Trumps message is appallingly clear. With stuff like this, what could the media possibly make up that is worse?

Re:Can we stop repeating the anti-Trump memes?..
Now, before I write the rest of this, let me point out this comment I made earlier. I know full well that people, especially the media, lie about Trump and what he says a lot. They do misrepresent what he says. My dislike of him is - as far as I know - not based on those lies.
Wanting to ban Muslims from entering the country simply on the basis of their religion is pretty awful. That's listed on his website, so I hope you find that an acceptable source. It actually helps ISIS by giving them extra recruiting material - they love seeing blanket anti-Muslim statements, it gets them fighters and support. We can and should reject Islamism, but we should do it without blaming all Muslims, as well as without claiming it has nothing to do with Islam - Maajid Nawaz has an excellent article here.
His stance on NAFTA and free trade in general is not supported by most economists. He has no coherent economic worldview. He, for some reason, thinks a trade deficit is automatically a bad thing (see previous link to his website). On this page he claims he can "Reclaim millions of American jobs and reviving American manufacturing by putting an end to China’s illegal export subsidies and lax labor and environmental standards." How, exactly, he is going to change China's environmental standards is left to the reader. His plan to lower the corporate tax rate to 15% is potentially bad; it depends on how that's implemented.
Not something I find "particularly disagreeable", but merely baffling - "Crime— Homicides last year increased by 17 percent in America’s fifty largest cities. That’s the largest increase in 25 years. More than 2,000 have been shot in Chicago since January of this year alone. Donald Trump is the law and order candidate in this Presidential race." (under Section 5, titled "Other Reforms") - how does he plan on reforming "crime", in general?
And, of course, there's his ridiculous wall idea. Seizing the remittances earned by people working here is very disagreeable to me; that's effectively a large tax on people who are, generally, low income. That combined with the fact that a wall is unlikely to meaningfully impact illegal immigration make it a really bad idea.
Oh, and how could we forget that he wants to kill the families of terrorists. Killing someone just because they're related to someone else is never okay, especially if you intentionally make a policy out of it.
He wants to put ground troops in Syria to fight ISIS. America does not need another ground war, especially one that is so politically risky.

Re:Islam is the problem, not encryption
Well said.
ANY belief that teaches mass genocide is evil / satanic / definitely NOT holy.
Jesus taught compassion first, repentance later. "Your sins are forgiven. Go and sin no more."
He **never** attempted to convert anyone.
Radical Muslims seem to forget one KEY verse: "all who draw the sword will die by the sword."
However, the REAL problem is not the radicals; it is the silent majority who do NOTHING to stop this evil of intolerance.
