Re:So what?

I'm guessing you're recalling this semi-famous crash. Reports varied, but it was likely going 120 mph, and it only rolled once -- more like flipped over, skid upside down for 100 yards, then flipped back when it was stopped and the roof was torn off. It was a Mercedes SL, and was a hard-top convertible. The hard top was tough, but not 3 roll accident tough. The weight and momentum of the car would have crushed that top if it had rolled 3 times.

Re:This is why Trump is popular.
I don't know if the Donald is being genuine or just opportunistic, but his messages about loss of American jobs, unfair trade agreements, and corporate behavior is why so many people will put up with his other flaws.
Donald Trump uses slave labor.
Trump is building a giant condo–hotel–golf courses development in Dubai. They, like all Dubai developments, use what is effectively indentured servitude – turned into slavery by not upholding the agreement.
When asked by reporters, Trump said that he does not engage in such employment practices. Well, technically, he doesn't. There are a couple of shell companies that Donald Trump contracts-out the work to, and those companies import the (usually Bangladeshi) laborers using false agreements.
Their Passports are confiscated upon arrival.
They end up owing twice what they had agreed to.
They earn half of what they were promised.A Vice documentary piece exposed this three years ago—They re-visited, and just released an update – Season 4, Episode 10.
The original expose on slaves in Dubai.
The recent update, but you have to have HBO GO, as its so new.

Re:Pew Pew Pew
can the beam be held on a spot long enough to matter may be the trick
Yes it's hard to believe they can aim that quickly and precisely - but then, it's such an obvious and fundamental problem that the answer must surely be, "Yes"; otherwise why even bother? Based on the capabilities of the cancelled (but successfully tested) THEL project, I think this problem has been solved since the early 2000s, if not earlier.
If the target has to keep jinking to avoid laser lock, he's not going to be able to use guns or lock missiles.
It's quite plausible that the main battlefield impact of early laser weapons will simply be to force tactical changes on the enemy: fight in cloudy/foggy/smoky conditions whenever possible, always attack in sufficient numbers (of vehicles, or of individual missiles/shells/etc.) to overwhelm the capacity of the laser defences, etc.
However, I expect that if the early laser weapons are at all successful, research and development of higher power levels will be a high priority. At some point, the only effective strategic defence will be to have your own laser weapons. When the enemy has (for example) 10 MW orbital lasers, the only effective defence will be to have a laser of your own to shoot back with.
I don't expect lasers to actually replace or obsolete missiles and guns, but everyone will need "laser fire support" to be able to maintain the tactical conditions necessary to effectively employ missiles and guns - kind of like the way aircraft haven't replaced ground vehicles, but your ground vehicles probably won't last very long if the other guy has air support, and you don't.

Re:The real reason?
The issue is that it can be perfectly healthy to eat around 900,000 calories a year, but if you eat just around 15,000 calorie per year too much, people gain 5 pound a year. That is less than 2% over target, but a weight gain of 5 pound per year, will easily cause significant issues in the long term. 15,000 calories a year is just 41 calories a day or about an half an apple every day.
Exactly. But given this, what's weird is that we don't all become fat and obesity is a recent problem. Nobody regulates their caloric to within a couple of percent. Even if you tried and read all the food labels, you couldn't do it because you can't measure with sufficient accuracy how much you burn (unless you live in one of those calorimeter rooms). I have been 61 kg +/- 2 kg for the last 15 years and I don't monitor what I eat or live by the scale. Clearly something is buffering my food intake to maintain this or it wouldn't be possible. It might be at the appetite level or it might be after that (more likely, I'm a fast eater). Either way, for many people it's the case that they are remarkably good at maintaining weight. Much better than they should be given the numbers you quote (which sound correct).
The BBC did a documentary on this topic a while ago. They tried to get thin people to put on weight and the results were slightly surprising: not all of them did, despite increasing their calorie intake greatly. Also, most or all lost the weight they put on after the experiment without any effort.

And yet micro-targeting no longer is all that effective because it's not resulting in more user actions - they're going down, not up. So it's your claim that is demonstrably false. Re: We should never expect or accept tracking
"How much information?" If you have been here for years, then you would have only had to give a nickname and an email - same as I did back when I had a 5-digit uid to when I switched to this account. Sure, now they ask for a job title, but "I prefer not to say" is an option, company size has "Unspecified/Not applicable", and the second option for country is also "I prefer not to say."
So, a nickname and email address are "too much information?"

Re:Peter Parker says
That page is tedious. The author provides no real description of his language other than to say it 'has a basic lexicon, syntax, and semantics' and 'is like the machine language of the universe. Any system you choose to analyze and model can be described in this language!' He asserts that his 'systemese' is based upon the way the human brain models systems. He reaches further at points to try to tie in the notion of sapience (read 'wisdom').
My instinct as a programmer tells me that once one actually tries to compile/interpret and run this 'systemese' the edge-cases take over and everything goes to hell
In order for it to work it would have to have a physics engine and extremely advanced.... Oh no! It can't be! It COULDN'T BE!

Why do you hate capitalism?
Why the fuck would anyone create yet another disposable anything? Is there a widespread contagion of viruses caused by unsanitary lasers shared by groups of people?
We live in a closed system with limited ressources, stop wasting them and turning them into garbage!

Re:What?
Without any knowledge of this case, I would guess that it's "trade sanctions".
The US typically walks in and tells everyone how it's going to go down, or else trade sanctions.
The US is a nation of bullies, just look at Cuba, an independent nation doing THEIR OWN THING and the US has just given them shit for decades. And before you go all ape shit at me over the "Missile Crisis" just have a bit of perspective: the US has missiles and other military forces stationed all over Europe and Asia, very close to Russia. Most people, reading a factual account of the USA-USSR cold war will interpret the USA to be the aggressors. Don't flame me, just think about it.
I recommend the BBC documentary The Cold War as a great starting point. Yes, it's almost 24 hours long, but it's an excellent independent portrayal of the entire Cold War and has some excellent interviews with world leaders from the time.

Re: Pirate party
So, the Holocaust was just propaganda?
Pretty much. (documentary) Amazing what you'll find when you do a little fact checking. (photo gallery showing proof of Holocaust propaganda). The US had concentration camps too, big deal. Jews were deported from Spain, England, and 40+ other countries, but Germany did it last and so it's a big deal (who owns the media?) There was a Typhus epidemic in WWII and that's why German concentration camps had those interred shaved and washed, to save lives. Hitler believed that everyone should have a homeland and was going to deport Jews to the Galapagos since no one, not US nor Brittan or French would take the Jews (they had deported them before). When the allies were bombing they destroyed civilian and military targets, this caused starvation by disrupting supply lines. This allowed Typuhs to run rampant. The crematoriums found at the concentration camps were small and used to cremate the infected dead to keep from spreading deadly Typhus. Typhus makes you look like those "malnourished" photos of "holocaust victims", many of which weren't even taken in Germany, or were edited by propagandists.
Seriously though, you should do some fact checking. Just listen to anyone who actually fought, even US war heroes:
"Enemy troops are fair game: A driver in a jeep - zap him. A soldier running through the snow - zap him.
But we weren't always scrupulous about our target
Atrocities were committed by both sides. That fall our fighter group received orders from the Eighth Air Force to stage a maximum effort. Our seventy-five Mustangs were assigned an area of fifty miles by fifty miles inside Germany and ordered to strafe anything that moved. The objective was to demoralize the German population.
Noboby asked our opinion about whether we were actually demoralizing the survivors or maybe enraging them to stage their own maximum effort in behalf of the Nazi war effort. We weren't asked how we felt zapping people. It was a miserable, dirty mission, but we all took off on time and did it. If it occurred to anyone to refuse to participate (nobody refused, I recall) that person would have probably been court-martialed.
I remember sitting next to B[..] at a briefing and whispered to him: 'If we're gonna do things like this, we sure as hell better make sure we're on the winning side." That's still my view'"
(quote from: Yeager, Chuck & Janos, Leo: "Yeager - An Autobiography" (1985), pp. 62-63)
Yes, That Chuck Yeager... Or, who would know better than General Patton himself?
At a press conference in Regensburg, Germany, on May 8, 1945, immediately after Germany's surrender, Patton was asked whether he planned to treat captured SS troops differently from other German POW's. His answer was:
"No. SS means no more in Germany than being a Democrat in America -- that is not to be quoted. I mean by that that initially the SS people were special sons of bitches, but as the war progressed they ran out of sons of bitches and then they put anybody in there. Some of the top SS men will be treated as criminals, but there is no reason for trying someone who was drafted into this outfit . .
."
-"Berlin gave me the blues. We have destroyed what could have been a good race, and we are about to replace them with Mongolian savages. And all Europe will be communist. It's said that for the first week after they took it (Berlin), all women who ran were shot and those who did not were raped. I could have taken it (instead of the Soviets) had I been allowed."
"Actually, the Germans are the only decent people left in Europe. it's a choice between them and the Russians. I prefer the Germans." And on September 2: "What we are doing is to destroy the only semi-modern state in Europe, so that Russia can swallow the whole."
