    Technically you can: N-PENTADECANE

    There's a DEFCON 21 talk on this topic. The punchline is: wax motors are high-force/high-latency/low-displacement change buoyancy engines that are extremely energy inefficient. The speaker ended up going the opposite direction(IE. shallow depth but low power) using medical syringes and pager motors to compress small gas pockets. This has a nice side benefit of avoiding enthalpy losses, or insulation concerns associated with using a heat engine. Other forms of air-independent propulsion do exist though... (Some are even low-cost. )

    The topic is interesting but the presentation was inadequately rehearsed and the speaker misspoke several times(10 degrees C is the thermocline / N-Pentadecane phase transition, and 60 degrees C is the approximate melting temperature of paraffin).

    If I could give it over again, I would have done more pool testing before the conference and brought some video footage of a glide test on stage with me. The yaw instability resulting from the lack of a stabilizer is noticeable if you watch closely. I never generated any drag data, but the surface finish would need to be vapor polished to achieve the desired laminar flow.

    Gushing about how much money I squandered on this project is the main thing I find embarrassing about it... I try not to think too much about the presentation quality and I hope it will still impress me as informative(despite its warts) once I'm finished with my education.

    Maybe it's different on desktop Macs, but on a Macbook, most gestures are on by default.

    Mealworms are the larvae of darkling beetles. They have legs. Darkling beetles are those black elongated things, kind of like a cockroach only not as flattened and with harder and darker wing covers.

    Watched this with my wife, who, while also in tech, never worked at a workplace that used Scrum. She cracked up and thought it was the funniest thing she'd ever seen. I sat next to her, stone-cold silent. She asked why I wasn't laughing, and I said, "Dude, that's MY LIFE." All that's needed to parody Scrum is... an accurate description of Scrum.

    Of course, in that episode was that Scrum actually worked for them (it probably helped that all the devs worked in the same office)

    The following is part of the title from the video:

    President Obama promotes the myth that everyone must go to college. That if you don't go, your life will be ruined -- that you will end up waiting tables, or trapped in some other mundane occupation. The truth is, even with a college degree, you may still end up waiting tables, you'll just begin your "career" four or five years later, tens of thousands of dollars in debt.

    Here is an example of some of the plumb jobs college grads were able to land during the Obama administration. Not just liberal arts majors mind you, but graduates with degrees in mathematics, robotics, neuroscience, engineering, accounting, business administration, economics, biology, communications, graphic design, marketing, and linguistics.

    Of course when it comes to education, it's not just the Obama administration that deserves a failing grade. For years, politicians of both parties have pandered to students by promising more aid in the form of direct or subsidized student loans. As a result, colleges and universities are freed from competitive forces that would otherwise keep tuition low. Easy access to cheap credit enables students to bid up tuition, benefiting the educational establishment at their expense. Politicians secure student's votes by promising relief from skyrocketing tuition by providing even more loans. Ironically, the loans themselves are the very reason tuition is so high in the first place.

    Before the Federal Government got involved, college degrees were much more affordable, and ambitious students from poorer families could easily work their way through. In addition, as fewer high school graduates actually went on to college, not only were college degrees much less expensive to obtain, they were far more valuable to have. With so many high school grads now going on to college, a college degree is actually less valuable in today's job market, despite its inflated price tag, than was a high school diploma in the 1950s. The only solution is to get the Federal Government completely out of higher education, and let the free market fix what the government broke!

    For those of you who feel a college degree is essential to financial success consider John D Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie and Cornelius Vanderbilt. Rockefeller dropped out of high school and began working full-time at age 16. Carnegie didn't even go to high school and began working full-time at age 13. Vanderbilt dropped out of school at age 11, and by age 16 had started his own ferry business. All three were born poor and became self-made billionaires, who attained estimated net worths (in today's dollars) of approximately $670, $300. and $175 billion respectively. To put those numbers into perspective, the richest living American, Bill Gates, who dropped out of Harvard during his sophomore year, has an estimated net worth of just $65 billion.

    You do know that a small aircraft can actually lift off the ground while parked when the wind is high enough, right? Weight on the gear at that point is 0 :).

    And even a sufficiently stripped 747 will lift off the ground with no engines.

    The technology for robots in space is immediately useful on Earth. Self driving cars, remote geographical exploration, space weather (you certainly wouldn't put people in a solar polar orbit to take pictures of the sun), remote mineral sensing.

    Freeman Dyson gave an interesting talk a couple of years ago, speculating about the next few centuries of exploration and settlement. He envisions colonies in the Kuiper Belt in a couple hundred years, but not much beyond Mars for the next 50 or so. And he anticipates an "island hopping" model of interstellar expansion, similar to the Polynesian settlement of the Pacific. Anyway, it's an interesting talk. (34 min)

    I, the poster of the nigger jokes above, hereby certify that I agree with the stand-up comic Chris Rock, in that I "Love black people, but hate me some niggers!" I have met and and truly enjoyed knowing some really fine, intelligent, wise, motivated, hard-working folks who happened to be of African descent. But not just any half - the way I cut my apple determines which half you get. If there is a bruise, it will be either on my half or on your half. Putting the halves together gives us exactly the apple that we appeared to have before it was sliced.

    In quantum terms, it is much as the video above describes the double slit experiment - the photon or electron goes through both slits, so it is in 2 places at once. That is how we both appear to have the same apple in the beginning. Slice the apple, same as measuring the photon, and it collapses into the two halves.

    We can create photons that are not entangled, and they do not behave the same way. What happens at detector 0 in the second video is inexplicable, currently, but that's entanglement.
