Goddammitsomuch
I've been seeing this nonsense a lot lately. The right wing claim that socialism and fascism are the same thing, make a few snide comments about Venezuela (but skip over the Soviet Union since they're friends with Putin) and use their media apparatus (Fox News, CNN, even MSNBC and Politico have gotten into the act) to hammer the point home .
I keep saying this, but this is all a classic tactic devised by the Soviets and perfected by Karl Rove during the Reagan years; to wit: Whatever faults you yourself have your relentlessly accuse the other side of. So we have a GOP president who is the defacto head of the American right wing and praised Chinese President Xi for seizing power for life, we have a GOP that let the water situation in Flint, Mi happen to save a buck, and we've got the right wing to thank for our $600 billion/yr Military Industrial Complex and somehow it's the folks who want to give people healthcare that are the real oppressors....
I wish I knew what to do about it. Talk radio's a major problem. You've got millions of people who get a 60-90 minute dose of propaganda everyday. I don't know how to counter that. I'd say more education, but the right wing's figured that one out too.
On the plus side I come from a short lived family and probably got 15-20 years left tops. Less if this stress gets any worse... -

Re:Translation
It is not the Autistic people that are causing the issue. Autistic people lack social skills and tend to be looked upon as lacking empathy, this is not true but it appears that way. What they are good at is working with objective systems on objective data.
Technology as they are referring to is all computer based, computers are Mathematics engines, Mathematics engines are purely objective working on purely objective principles. Yet feminist humanities crowd keep trying to push subjective principle into STEM all of it, said principles are incompatible, or irrelevant by definition yet these idiots have been at it for years.

Talking points for people who need them
After my initial submission to parliament I've continued to analyze this Bill. My friends are interested in this however many of them didn't know what they could do, so I wrote this for them, detailing progress so far. I hope this helps anyone else trying to fight this really bad law.
Greetings Friends,
Thank you all for your good will and support in replying to my first email. Thank you for tolerating a mass email. Considering some of the question I got back I thought I would update you all about how this bad law is progressing. I'll attempt to answer your questions so that everyone is kept informed.Questions
One friend suggested that he left the Communist states to escape this kind of surveillance.
Where it differs is that the Stasi only had capability to monitor 40 phone calls at a time. With modern technology it is quite easy to monitor every person by adapting the apps on our phones we use, when we talk to an AI (like Siri) or, friends on them.Another friend pointed out that our Attorney General is making representations to the UK,US,NZ and Canadian Governments to pass these laws.
The issue for us is that corporate information technology has no interest in investing in countries that can potentially interfere with their operations. This is a direct attack on employment opportunities in Australia and will drive a lot of investment in Australia's economy to Singapore. This is a direct attack on employment opportunities in Australia.https://www.zdnet.com/article/...
What can these guys do with this law?
Well I haven't completed all of the analysis however this is what I've learned so far. Your phone, computer, tablet, home router and any vehicle computers can all be utilised to gather data on an individual. The telecommunications providers, the companies behind the websites you use can all be compelled to spy on you. Everything you do can be monitored. These are Front Door security holes, intended and by design. This law also exposes Australian citizens to the laws from other countries, I've still getting my head around to how far it goes.
How will this affect my business?
Your business can be compelled to cooperate with the government to monitor individual. If you take a position where you protect privacy of your clients you are exposed to the liability for the government's actions. The govt can compel you to alter project deployments and comply with in a deadline. They can alter scope at will and your business is responsible for maintaining govt infrastructure until they no longer need it. Penalties exceed $250,000 per instance in addition to liability. Is anyone else involved in this?
Yes, to my relief more and more people and organisations are becoming aware of this. Privacy focused organisations have started shifting their attention, which attracted the attention of some companies like Google and Apple. To my surprise Telstra, the NBN joined in the fight so that gives you some idea about the level of interference they anticipate. Some State government departments also starting to raise objections. I was in among the other private citizens that wrote objections to this bill. We need all the help we can get. What can I do?
I think the best description is with Digital Rights Watch:https://digitalrightswatch.org...
They provide a short script on how you can interact with Labor Senators and voice your concerns. Feel free to use any of the information I've provided.

Commentaries can definitely be a mixed bag. As you mention, some of Breaking Bad is great, but some episodes they're just jerking each other off for an hour about how great they all are and don't actually talk about the motivation behind what's on the screen and what not. Still, it was a shame for all us film nerds that commentaries almost disappeared, because when they're good, there can be some really fascinating insight in them.

Re:No.
What an incredibly stupid idea.
Donating to Wikipedia is fine, but at the end of the day their a charity making a public resource. Are we running out of things to criticize Amazon for now that they've been shamed into paying living wages?
Unethical companies will do the minimum required without going to jail, and may risk that. So, they aren't going to give back. In short they leech whatever they can.
Somewhat ethical companies will do what they can, but won't risk profits in a large way. They may donate back, and may even try to make it a positive for good PR.
Highly ethical companies are fairly likely to be driven out of business by the first two. Basically if you want to see company ethics increase you have to change the rules, but of course that will only affect your country unless you penalize imports from other countries who do not obey your rules, and that is hardly easy, though possible I think. Note this is different than Trump's "winning", as their is an ethical stance behind it. If you have similar rules to protect basic ethics the environment/etc you would have no tariffs.

>Change won't come from establishment politicians - we need to be willing to elect some nutjobs who promise to overturn Citizen's United.
Absolutely agree with that. Although they don't have to be "nutjobs", there are some really bright and sound people that would do well to work outside the two major parties. Plus, new parties could form that really aren't crazy, they just differ from the main R and D stances in important ways.
>"I would LOVE that. But first people need to go out and vote in the primaries AND/OR vote third party
There is the problem. Voting so-called "third party" is almost always a 100% mistake. This is due to the "spoiler effect", which is not only real, but it is pretty bad. Essentially, due to our current system, voting outside the main R/D means your vote will actually hurt you- not only can you not win, but the vote will take away a vote from the candidate closest to who you would have voted for had you voted for one of the two main! It really, really sucks. You might have seen this stuff before, but check out:

Re:These aborts are dangerous
It sounds like the escape tower was not used here. The American narrator explicitly said the escape tower had been jettisoned before any mention of the failure, it looks like the escape tower gets jettisoned when the first stage separates based on the video. Based on the weightless feeling, it sounds like it just didn't have the power for whatever reason to reach orbit and started descending, and the negative G-forces of the descent made them feel weightless. So it sounds like the capsule was already descending before they triggered the actual abort.
There's a video here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?...
Once you hear the translator start talking about a booster failure the American narrator quiets down and you can hear the translator trying to keep up.

Re:This is why everyone is going back to capsules
The Space Shuttle was originally proposed in the 1960s, and designed in the 1970s. Back then, spy satellites used film. After a full roll was shot, it was ejected, re-entered the Earth's atmosphere, and an elaborate system was in place to capture those film canisters in mid-air. When all the film aboard a spy satellite was used, it became a billion dollar paperweight in orbit.
The point of the Space Shuttle was to go into orbit, dock with a spy satellite, and re-load it with new film canisters. That's why the Shuttle's cargo bay was exactly the size to hold a spy satellite (which not coincidentally is about the same size as Hubble - in fact they're just a HST pointed at the ground instead of at the stars). As long as the cost of each Shuttle mission was less than the cost of building and launching a new spy satellite, it was worth it to the USAF. The USAF was hoping for one Shuttle launch every week to restock its spy satellites with fresh film. At that frequency, the rocket stages you throw away become prohibitively expensive. So the Shuttle was designed with as many re-usable parts as possible.
Unfortunately for the Shuttle, during its development, spy satellites began switching to electronic camera sensors. These could simply beam the resulting images down to Earth via radio, obviating the need for film. Consequently, by the time the Shuttle finally flew, the USAF no longer needed it for its original purpose. And the Shuttle never flew more than about a dozen times a year, with average interval between flights being more than 2 months. The huge development, facility, and staff maintenance costs which were supposed to be amortized by spreading it over 50 launches a year, were instead spread over just 5 launches a year. Resulting in a per-flight cost which far exceeded the cost of conventional rockets. -

Re:What does it do if you remove all gender?
Eh, curb your ambitions.
The goal of Amazon's thing was to take all the names and boil it down to 5 names or something.
That's overly ambitious.
An expert system could easily cut a list in half or possibly remove 75% of applicants.
That leaves you with 25% left to manually audit.
That's not bad.
The dream of not having to do anything because the robots do it all for you is unreasonable at this juncture. However, if you curb your ambition to the limitations of the technology, then you'll find it works quite well.

Well, I don't know about poor selection. My favorite band is prog-era Genesis, and I've found things from them on Youtube that I've never seen anywhere else. Never even heard of before Youtube. I'd never heard of It's Yourself or Spot the Pigeon, and Youtube introduced me to both.
Maybe you're on some super-elite mp3 site that gives you access to stuff more rare than this, or higher bitrates or whatever - but I'm pretty impressed with Youtube's catalog.

2. Apple Stores have never done much, if any, component-level diagnosis and repair. They run their diagnostic suite, and generally have a quick look-see; but they sure as hell don't get out the video microscope and peer at stuff at that level. Many, many companies don't do component level diagnosis and repair outside of their factory. And when you handle the sheer volume of repairs that any major tech company handles, even then, component-level diagnosis and repair is seldom practical, even for the manufacturer itself.
3. I wouldn't be surprised if that whole "independent tech" scene was a setup. I've repaired many an electronic device for a living, and that tech in the video zeroed-in on that conveniently (and unbelievably) "bent pin" just a LITTLE too quickly. And BTW, that would be a VERY unlikely field-failure...

There's a cheap alternative to get your feet wet
If you want to try out a fun product that will whet your appetite for a Magic Leap ML1 or Hololens, check out Aryzon's headset (http://aryzon.com). It's basically the augmented-reality evolution of Google Cardboard -- you mount your phone in it, the display's light bounces from a mirror onto reflective window tinting, and you see a 3D hologram superimposed on whatever is in the room in front of you.
Aryzon's lead (only?) developer has done a fantastic job of writing documentation, creating demo apps, and making tutorial videos ( https://www.youtube.com/channe... ).
Make no mistake... it's nowhere close to being in the same league as a ML1 or a Hololens... but at 30 Euros (~$36) with free shipping worldwide (including to the US), it's actually cheap enough to buy for shits & giggles. Don't be afraid to order one just because it involves mailing to the US from the Netherlands... NL-US mail is pretty fast (it also might be available from Amazon, if you found this post via Google long after it was a current topic on Slashdot).
There are two similar products I'm aware of to Aryzon's headset -- HoloKit and the Lenovo Lightsaber:
* Holokit's website (holokit.io) has been dead for at least the past few days, and probably longer. You can get it from Amazon with 2-day Prime shipping... but I'm not really sure what you could DO with it once it arrives, because as noted... their website is missing in action. And AFAIK, HoloKit doesn't have a headstrap, so you have to use one or both hands just holding it up. Speaking as someone who's done the whole "hold a Cardboard viewer with a heavy phone on your face using one hand" routine in the past, I can definitely say that it gets old (and tiring) really fast.
* The Lightsaber is probably a step-up design-wise, but (AFAIK) has no public SDK. Lenovo has apparently been promising one since last year. Enough said. Without a SDK, it's just a silly toy.
Aryzon is a small company, but their main (only?) developer has done an amazing job of writing demo software, creating documentation for developers, and posting tutorials on Youtube (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCy7KJ7TQ3myJ0fSVqFDudeg/videos).
That said... MagicLeap and Hololens are more than just polished hardware. They both have a substantial amount of software backing them up to do things like 3D surface-mapping and immersive binaural sound. Do you need it if your entire goal is to admire a holographic balloon floating a few feet in front of you? No, not really. But you're really, really going to need it if you want to render something onto a random tabletop, floor, wall, or ceiling in a random room somewhere... because THAT'S a really HARD problem to solve. So hard, in fact, that when you first get into mixed/augmented-reality development, you probably won't even realize it IS a problem until you've been at it for a few days... and then, the sheer enormity of it hits you like a boulder.
TLDR: if $2,295 is out of your budget, buy an Aryzon. It's cheap & fun, and it'll give you an affordable taste of why holographic mixed reality is so cool. Just remember that there IS more to "mixed reality" than "being able to see digital holograms superimposed on whatever's in front of you", the same way there's a world of difference between experiencing 6DoF immersive VR with an Oculus Rift, haptic gloves, and full-body motion tracking and experiencing the equivalent of a Viewmaster where you can stand fixed in one spot and enjoy a 360-degree view by moving your head around.

That's not really a problem
it's a tactic management has used for decades to excuse poor pay. You keep a few better paid employees because it keeps everybody from organizing and demanding better pay. I saw this in the call centers in the late 90s/early 00s. Management would tell the existing employees how lucky they were because they started at $10/hr when the new guys started at $7. Nevermind that $10/hr wasn't enough to get by even back then.
Also before everyone piles in with the old "if you raise wages prices go up" nonsense, if that were true humanity could never progress as a species. We'd still be subsistence farmers and the big mac index wouldn't be a thing. Prices go up slower than wages when productivity goes up faster than wages. And productivity has been raising pretty much non stop if you focus on raw output (yes, an increasing number of low wage service employees replacing high paying manufacturing jobs means that measured productivity growth across the entire economy is flat, but we're still making more real goods with less people, see here).
Basically so long as you're making more stuff with less or even the same people you can raise wages without price inflation, because that's real wage growth. e.g. there's more stuff for everybody. Well, not since 2008 though. Since 2008 the more stuff part of the equation has gone to the top 1%.... -

I like how they try to tie it to the Cambridge Analytics scandal to get a rise out of the community. Yes, Google is not required to report every bug they fix when no breach occurred. There's nothing wrong with that. As for for shutting down Google+, it was as good a time as any. If they're going to start having to worry about bad press over a dead product they're going to finish killing it.
This reads like a hit piece on google. I can't imagine why. -
