Re:And Linux users want 'free'
How is that confusing? You're unaware of Android? A widely used Linux system with a massive rate of piracy?
Point is it is absolutely nothing to do with Linux or "Linux users". If you have alternative statistics on what the piracy rate is on Linux then I'd be happy to see them (and no, your anecdotes are not evidence or statistics).

What do you mean, "this one"? We're talking about the geniuses who think their "laws" overrules the laws of mathematics and probably physics too. We're literally in "pi=3" country.

Not everything is made in Japan
Samsung {...} Sony, and everyone else have their stuff made by Foxconn too.
Not every single company manufactures its stuff exclusively in China.
For example, Sony still manufactures in Japan.
(And Samsung obviously manufactures a lot in South Korea)Those non-China-made products include their smartphones (and other high-tech, hi-priced gadgets), they'll prefer outsourcing less sensitive accessories (wall wart charger).
disclaimer: both of my latest two smartphones are Japan-made Sony Xperias. Though I still flashed an entirely different OS (not Android) on them.
So it's not *China*'s spyware you're going to find installed in there. -
Re:iPhones? AA batteries?
For comparison, FPL notes the battery system is equivalent to 100 million iPhone batteries, or 300 million AA batteries.
First of all, is it true there's only the equivalent of three AA batteries in an iPhone?
Yes, it is true. A typical alkaline AA battery has up to 2800 mAh capacity. Of course, this is at 1.5V, so the power capacity is around 4.2 Wh. So 3 of them would be around 12.6 Wh. A, iPhone Xs Max has a 3174 mAh battery, at about 4.2V. So around 12.6 Wh. So yes, about the same capacity.

Re:Better solution than install fest: Vest them!
I'd like to add Roku OS and Tizen to the list, not to mention that Linux isn't just in your house.
-
Re:To bad the Honor System doesn't work.
If you know that Stallman is not referring to cost, when he talks about "freedom", then the rest of your argument makes no sense. What the hell do you mean by the Honor System? Does your definition of the Honor System mean that people will pay developers, or that developers won't sneak malicious code into their apps?
There is no honor among corporations and governments. Governments around the world have been pushing companies to insert malicious code into operating systems for quite some time. The goal of this code is to control your computer and monitor your activity.
This malicious code permits governments to become ruthless authoritarians and companies to become their spies. Do you really want to live under the social credit system that China is now using? If you actually value your freedom, you should never be put into the position of trusting someone else's code. You can verify the proper function of the code. If you don't know how to program, you can pay someone to do so on your behalf.
You should also know by now that closed spec hardware should not be trusted. Most of your CPUs are secretly running a Minix hypervisor right now, and you don't even know it. You have been Pwned, straight from the manufacturer.
This is a very simple concept, and it pains me to read all of the misrepresentation and personal attacks on RMS by all of these enlightened
./ posters. Sometimes I wonder if anyone here has ever read any license, let alone the GPL. -
Re:It is not wrong...
to help put food on the table of someone who writes software. Free software will always be mediocre and decades behind commercial solutions. Yes, ostentatiously [sic] the word free doesn't necessarily mean no cost, according to RMS, but let's get real, if there is no hindrance to simply copying it, then there is no motivation to pay for more than the cost of the copy. Unfortunately, copying 1s and 0s hardly covers creating them in the first place, and if there is no motivation to create them, then the choices will be mostly limited to hobbyist and hardware manufacturer written software.
And yet people do make a living writing free software. In many cases quite a comfortable one.

Re:Aaaaaand they're stupid
Not buying cloud services from Amazon is NOT going to keep them from disrupting your business or intruding on your business.
Actually it will/did. Until the last couple years, AWS was what was keeping Amazon afloat. Amazon's online retail business was losing money. So Amazon was using profit from AWS to bolster and support their online store. Their online store is finally beginning to make some profit, but the bulk of their operating income continues to come from AWS. It made more money than their store last year, despite having less than 1/8th the revenue.
So it would've been stupid for competing online stores to use AWS. They would've literally been bankrolling their competition. I get what you're saying about picking the best product. It works when the company you're paying keeps financial and operational separation between their divisions (e.g. Samsung Semiconductor giving preferential treatment to Apple over Samsung Mobile because Apple was paying them more). But Amazon was literally using money made by AWS to bankroll the growth of the Amazon store. -

Re:A New Strategy?
Now that Edge and IE are discontinued, will Microsoft's new browser strategy be adding so many windows specific add-ons that Chrome for windows becomes distinctive from chrome on other platforms?
You mean like they've done for Android? With the large collection of Android apps provided by Microsoft you can essentially turn your Android device into a Microsoft phone.
Here's a list of addons to get you started:
Microsoft Launcher
Your Phone Companion
Microsoft Edge
Onedrive
Meet the new Microsoft Phone, powered by Android.

Re:sometimes
Strong opening you've got there mate, already grasping for straws in your first sentence. First of all, the GPL is a distribution licence. You don't have to distribute your changes as long as you don't distribute your derivative outside your organisation.
So the government is going to use open source software but you won't be able to see it, why does it matter if it's open source or not then? Governments around the world already get source code access to even the most closely guarded software packages like Microsoft Windows so if the government isn't going to release the source of what they're using then what's the point?
Vetting, remember. Finally, at least you can find them, unlike with proprietary software where you never know about a problem until it bites you in the ass.
No, you are confused. Governments already have access to the source for even MS Windows, they already do vet that.
In addition Microsoft has source access agreements with NATO and also with the EU.
So, you're advocating security by obscurity, which isn't security at all.
Actually you're very wrong if it is easier for white hat hackers to find bugs then it is also easier for black hat hackers to find bugs, I know that's an uncomfortable truth for FOSS advocates but the fact that it makes it easier to find vulnerabilities means it's easier for everyone to find vulnerabilities.
Not to mention that you'd have to be able to trust the suppliers, which reality shows you can't.
Wrong again. Governments have access to most proprietary software source code of the packages they use, even Windows, so no they do not have to trust the suppliers at all because they can vet the software.
So what open source projects would you say are free of defects and vulnerabilities?
None, that's why I'm suggesting vetting anything that goes in. The point isn't that it's flawless, it's that it's better than the alternatives.
The government can already vet what is going in, you really have no idea about what the government has access to.
Even the Linux kernel, the most widely used and heavily vetted open source project in history is rife with bugs and issues
As opposed to Windows, which is what everyone is using ATM? The same Windows which has shown itself to be a massive target for malware, ransomware, viruses and spyware, over and over again over the years? You're suggesting Linux is worse than that? [Citation needed]
No I am not suggesting that, you are again very confused. I am pointing out that it is no better. You're showing your ignorance by then going on to compare a kernel to an entire operating system to which the equivalent would in fact be a specific Linux distribution. But if you're comparing open and closed systems then what citation do you have that demonstrates than a Linux distribution of your choice is more secure than say macOS?

Re:Anybody mentioned South Korea to this guy?
That's a line from a few years ago. South Korea definitely relied on ActiveX but if you search for articles about it you'll find they are all dated either early this decade or late last decade. Anything more recently will net you stories like this:
https://www.zdnet.com/article/...
We also covered this shift on Slashdot: https://tech.slashdot.org/stor...
In terms of ActiveX deployment South Korea are truly number 1, there's no arguing that. But it's no where near as bad as it was in the past. The government has already depreciated the use of Active X for citizen authentication, and many banks have already moved away too.

Re:Naive
Google, initially honored the flag
That doesn't seem true either. All the documents I saw are unanimous in stating Google never honored the flag, even when they were petitioned to do so. And they only came out publicly about it last year.
So, if you can find any proof that Google used to honor DNT, but stopped doing so after it was enabled by default in IE, please post it. -
Re:Anyone notice Raspberry Pi prices lately?
Prices on Raspberry Pi boards have gone up noticeably (as have various kits sold with the Pi boards in them) in the past few months. Along with prices on other consumer goods that have also risen since November, this is likely the tariffs at work.
Where are your Raspberry Pis built? Where are you buying them? They've been building them in the Sony UK plant for the past 5+ years, to the tune of 14 million as of Sept. 2017
Has your gov't entered into a tariff war with the UK/EU?

Re: 1754 was not very good either ...
They started rising slightly in 2017, and all indications are that slight increase continued in 2018. So yes, they are slowly coming back - far from dead.
Wrong - you always just look at that one report that supports your claim, and then make up the rest as you go.

Re:Pain in the ass
They've already been on the record that third-party antivirus can be harmful to security: https://www.zdnet.com/article/... They're not wrong, I've seen some things from McAfee and Symantec that are downright shady.
-
Re:Wait before you draw conclusions
Does anyone really think that because IBM/Microsoft/... has patented something that that will stop anyone in _China_ from using/infringing it?
It will get China to stock up their weapons to fight off American patent trolls.
-
Re:Unsuitable metrics
Nowaday, patent portfolio is your war chest. If you don't have a lot of patents, you are at risk of being sued out of existence by US patent trolls. Given the US wants to fight this "intellectual property" war, i.e. patent trolling, it is only natural for Chinese companies to stock up their weapons.
