Re: What is a DOS screen?
Would you like to revise your information? DOOM engine renders at 320x200 (16:10 aspect ratio). You'll also find that the memory space for 320x240 is the SAME (it's a VGA mode which uses a more efficient algorithm) as the CGA 320x200 mode (which in 1993 was STILL the most common graphics mode available to MOST PC users hence the denominator for developers). Also, the only reason to split the screen was during multiplayer mode on console (eg Saturn, N64). It makes absolutely no sense to bank the screen quadrants when you're using the same amount of memory to render and MORE memory (and processor clocks) to stitch the quadrants.

Re:Finishing the demo
Dammit. Now I'm going to have to find, dust off, and install my Doom collection CD.
Be sure to install a modern source port such as ZDoom (software rendering) or GZDoom (OpenGL). Doom is still fun and playable in 1080p with all the old bugs fixed. Some of the custom levels are phenomenal too.

Re:Good riddance
There are about a bajillion updated ports of doom that run on modern hardward, you know.
I recommend Zdoom since it strikes a nice blend between new features and fidelity to the original Doom's graphics and sound.
You may prefer one of the ports that swaps out the "billboard sprites" in the original with 3d models, such as Jdoom. There are also packs of high-resolution textures for the id episodes, which come in handy since the newer ports support the same resolutions as your operating system.
Also of note is Zdaemon, based on Zdoom, which allows for 16 player client/server deathmatch or 4 player co-op.
Unless you miss the bugs, I don't see why you would play Doom under an emulator instead of using a ported engine.

Re:HL1 is the greatest game ever.
I really miss FPS games of this kind. I have put all my hopes on DNF, but it seems like it will never be released...
In that case I'd recommend downloading ZDoom and start playing some of the zillion-or-so mods that have been created for it over the years. I could be a bit biased, though. -_-

The ZDoom rickroll mod, of course!
ZDoom is an excellent Doom update, and, although I can't find the rickroll mod itself at the moment, check this video example out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8aJjMOy-Ops

Re:Hmmm....
Check out the newest releases of ZDoom. It now has pretty solid Strife support. (I've only managed to break the scripting once)

Shattered Soldier 100% run video
You all like to watch awesome gaming prowess, don't you? RouWa shows the world how it's done.
:)And for you Doom nuts, there's Action Doom, which is a single player campaign of the Contra game mechanics applied to the ZDoom engine.

Still being "updated"
Hell, by 3rd parties, doom/doom2 are still being updated/upgraded:
see Doom Legacy, ZDoom
Now, Doom3 is not really original anymore in terms of theme, so it might not do as well. But it could very well become one of those "old classics" several years from now.
Another big hotspot is the Doom3 engine, as we'll probably see several later games developed from companies that have licensed the engine for use in their own products. -
Other portsFor those interested, here are some other Doom ports.
Doom Legacy, has OpenGL, network & other kewl stuff
ZDoom, a hybrid of Doom, Hexen and other weird things, also check out ZdoomGL
PrBoom, very old school, the only port compatible with Compet-n demos. -
jDoom sucks
I can't stand jDoom. Seriously, I find it plain ugly. First, the low resolution graphics don't work well interpolated to the point of looking like clouds of blur - I prefer crisp pixels, thanks. Second: LENS FLARES.
Go get ZDoom instead, for a real Doom engine upgrade. -
Re:It's easy
And I certainly don't want to store it in a closet somewhere and have to lug it out and wire it up just to play some Doom or SimCity 2000 (my favorite DOS games).
There are plenty of source ports of Doom to modern operating systems. Besides running on both Linux and Windows, ZDoom also offers high resolutions and Quake-style key bindings. I highly recommend it.
The Doom community is still alive and kicking after ten years. Try Doomworld and my favorite, Doom newsgroups.

Re:Catagorization Issues?
And what about Doom, the greatest game of all time?

The newer DooM ports
Remember that DooM is still being developed. The newer source ports adds a lot to the DooM experience, like higher resolutions, mouselook and even 3d models.
Check out ZDooM available for Windows and Linux. It's a very stable port that adds a lot of playability compared to running iD's original DooM under Win32.
Also JDooM, a fun port that adds a lot of eyecandy under OpenGL.
This post is pretty much a rerun of one of my earlier! -
Re:SLIGE for Doom by Dave ChessI'll have to try that out, I've become addicted to DOOM again, but with an updated Quake style interface ZDOOM
My favourite mod for DOOM was one that took all the items in the level and randomly changed them into something else. You could pick the percentages if you wanted, so I'd change them mostly into barrels and sargents. You really didn't have to shoot much, they blew themselves up pretty good LOL
