You're right that gov't has its hands all up and over marriage. I don't see any difference in the definitions between union and marriage. Right now, any church can declare a union for any couple and that couple will have no legal rights or privileges. All you're proposing is switching the definition of union and marriage. All that would do would make a bunch of constitutional amendments limiting unions to hetrosexual couples. So basically, you're leaving the definition of marriage/union in the hands of a church, and now us godless heathens and non-xtian religious people will have no right to marry.

I can't give you examples of actual Western nations, but in just the last couple of decades there's:

1) Aggression by Serbia against muslims in Kosovo, Bosnia etc.
2) Fighting between Israel and Palestinian militants
3) Muslim aggression against Christians in Indonesia
4) Al-Quaida
5) Saddam Hussein calling the US "the great satan" even though he wasn't particularly religious himself

Recently, with the "under God" in the Pledge issue, it's come to light that that phrase was added during the Cold War to differentiate the US from "those godless communists".

Overall, I'd say religion definitely isn't used much these days as it was hundreds or thousands of years ago as a justification for war, though it's used constantly right now for terrorism, which is a form of war except that one of the combatants is not a formal nation. However, it still is used a lot by leaders to gain popular support and win elections; these is especially obvious with Dubya in power, who played the religion card for all it was worth.

There are definite economic advantages to open borders with friendly countries. If you don't need a passport to go from London to Latvia via France, Germany and Poland, I don't understand why you'd need one to go from Seattle to Vancouver and back again. Err... I thought evolution was a theory, rather than a fact. Now, before you jump on the bandwagon and start leaping up and down like a halfwit, yelling at the top of your lungs "You admitted it's a theory!" I think it needs to be pointed out that a scientific theory is not like a theory in everyday conversation. A scientific theory is an idea based on the available evidence, refined and polished over the years, in such a way as it does not conflict with evidence. When a piece of evidence comes out that does conflict with the theory, then the theory is revised in such a way as it does not conflict with the evidence, or, if that revision is not possible, then the theory is discarded and a new one replaces it.

Compare and contrast this with Christian "scientific" thought:
