Ghost In The Shell TV Series
Briareos writes: "Just found out over at animeondvd.com's forums (no link provided to protect the innocent...) that Production I.G. finally revealed quite some info about the GITS TV series they're currently working on. (I also thought it was a nice birthday present for me, by the way... :)"
Do they have info on who's voice acting for it and such?
There are lives at stake here!
It hurts and stuff -- pr0pz to all AC fp'ers.
Debian 3.0 has been out for TWO FUCKING DAYS! When in the FUCK is testing going to actually get some testing??? What in the fuck is TAKING SO LONG, goddammit???
"Cowboy Neal, you Roxorz my sockorz." Said Commander Taco lovingly as they embraced. People on the street yelled at them to leave, but they wouldn't listen. They loved each other too much. As they hugged, and kissed, and laid to the ground, never letting go. "Commander Taco, you wowzers my trousers." Cowboy Neal said. "I'm not wearing any." Commander Taco reminded him.
Then they were both taken to jail for sodomy and raped in jail, much to their delight.
- Lameness filters (It blocks a lot of legitmate posts)
- Unnessary posting delays. Hasnt taco learned to touch type? A lot of posts are typed in less than 20 seconds and it is a ANNOYING DELAY! 2 minute ban? Come on, so some are faster then others, big deal, some people have more to say than others
- Broken moderation system, The whole point is to sort the gems from the crap, yet a lot of posts designed to make a LIVELY DISCUSSION are MODERATED as flamebait! Come on, not everyone likes X, but just because some one bashes it dosent mean its Flamebait. Flame bait is more useful for DIRECT INSULTS and not legitmate discussions.
The "troll" moderation reason is fragmented and broken, why? Because they are trying to use an obsolete usenet term on a realtime discussion, "trolls" can cover a huge blanket of ideas.- Crapfloods, a meaningless flood of random letters or text, which the lameness filter does a crappy job at trying to stop, besides trolls have written tools using the opensource slashcode to generate crapfloods which bypass the filter
- Links to offensive websites, the most common one is known a http://www.goatse.cx, a awful site which shows a bleeding anus being stretched on the front page. Trolls sneak these links in by posting messages that look legitimate, but infact are sneaky redirects to the site. Common examples include rd.yahoo.com, www.linux-kernel.tk, goatsex.cjb.net, and googles "Im feeling lucky".
- Trying to break slashdot, this is actually a good thing, as it helps test slashdot for bugs. Famous examples include the goatse.cx javascript pop-up, the pagewidening post and the browser crashing post!
Subnet banning, this bans a user unless they email jamie macarthy with their mp5ed ipids. This is unfair, and banning a subnet BLOCKS A WHOLE ISP SOMETIMES, and not that individual user! This can cause chaos! But real trolls use annoymous proxys to get around this so THIS JUST BANS LEGITMATE USERS! Also, they are trying to censor some anoymous proxies, mainly from countrys like africa, so this yet more DISCRIMINATION! Pink page of Death, This censors people who use legitmate proxys or firewalls. The Bitchslap! An unethical punishment which is applied to moderators who fight censorship against this site! In addition the Editors use their un-limited mod points to create a communist style censored discussion on slashdot! But, the issue that concerens us the most, is the COMMENT QUOTA. A discrimatory system that stiffles discussion, cripples the community and will ultimateley destroy slashdot unless it is removed! Annoymous cowards are allowed only 10 posts a day! This is unethical! Users with negative karma only get two! That is DISCRIMINATION! How would you like to only be able to speak once a day, just because of the color of your skin. That would be racism, and slashdot is discrimitating on people just because of a negative number in a database! BOYCOTT SLASHDOT! LET THEM DIE! We wan't these stupid useless restrictions REMOVED! This comment will be posted again and again until it does! Inportant imformation for users Boycott slashdot, they are pissing over their community, they are becoming like the RIAA and MICROSOFT! Do NOT TOLERATE THIS SHIT! Here are some real news for nerds sites. We don't need slashdot, slashdot deserves to die! Thank you for reading this, please feel free to repost this information, please reply to add your comments, fight slashdot and its CENSORSHIP Don't forget to sign the petition! The approximation of mobile media to physical human body started with portable then wearable terminals, and finally settled to implantable terminals which ushered civilization into a new era where man and machine were no longer separate.
Such integration was realized by direct transplanting of communication terminals to the physical body, allowing the body and mind to interact immediately with standard computer and network technology. These implantables gradually took over the outdated portable/wearable technology, to be recognized as the prototype of "Cyberbrain."
After the ever-growing technology introduced the practical utility of micro-machines, cyberbrains became both safe and inexpensive. This caused rapid popularization of cyberbrains within countries that had little or no religion restrictions, such as Japan.
But the wide prevalence of cyberbrains caused social anxiety: people were exposed to risks of brain-hack because of their neural connection to the entire population using cyberbrains.
The most serious brain-hacking crime was "Ghost Hack", a case where total individuality including past memories and body discretion of a certain person became the subject of the hacker. Various countermeasures were taken, such as the development of numerous protective walls and barriers along with reinforcement of regulations, not to mention security intensification within the neural network system.
But they failed to abolish cyber-crimes, thus resulting in a rat race: further development of protective walls and barriers, and the emergence of more intelligent and original hackers.
Is this to air in NA, or will it be import only for us westerners? Couldn't find it on the site.
:P
Obligatory "me too" props to the movie. I hope is the show is good.
Now if only I could afford all the Cowboy Bebop episodes I might have to start collecting this stuff, but dam, between the computer parts, the games, the pron, and the consoles, who has money left over for anime imports?

1. Introduction
As everyone knows, Open Source software is the wave of the future. With the market share of GNU/Linux and *BSD increasing every day, interest in Open Source Software is at an all time high.
Developing software within the Open Source model benefits everyone. People can take your code, improve it and then release it back to the community. This cycle continues and leads to the creation of far more stable software than the 'Closed Source' shops can ever hope to create.
So you're itching to create that Doom 3 killer but don't know where to start? Read on!
2. First Steps
The most important thing that any Open Source project needs is a Sourceforge page. There are tens of thousands of successful Open Source projects on Sourceforge; the support you receive here will be invaluable.
OK, so you've registered your Sourceforge project and set the status to '0: Pre-Thinking About It', what's next?
3. Don't Waste Time!
Now you need to set up your SourceForge homepage. Keep it plain and simple - don't use too many HTML tags, just knock something up in VI. Website editors like FrontPage and DreamWeaver just create bloated eye-candy - you need to get your message to the masses!
4. Ask For Help
Since you probably can't program at all you'll need to try and find some people who think they can. If your project is a game you'll probably need an artist too. Ask for help on your new Sourceforge pages. Here is an example to get you started:
"Hi there! Welcom to my SorceForge page! I am planing to create a Fisrt Person Shooter game for Linux that is going to kick Doom 3's ass! I have loads of awesome ideas, like giant robotic spiders! I need some help thouh as I cant program or draw. If you can program or draw the tekstures please get in touch! K thx bye!"
Thousands of talented programmers and artists hang out at Sourceforge ready to devote their time to projects so you should get a team together in no time!
5. The A-Team
So now you have your team together you are ready to change your projects status to '1: Pre-Bickering'. You will need to discuss your ideas with your team mates and see what value they can add to the project. You could use an Instant Messaging program like MSN for this, but since you run Linux you'll have to stick to e-mail.
Don't forget that YOU are in charge! If your team doesn't like the idea of giant robotic spiders just delete them from the project and move on. Someone else can fill their place and this is the beauty of Open Source development. The code might end up a bit messy and the graphics inconsistant - but it's still 'Free as in Speech'!
6. Getting Down To It
Now that you've found a team of right thinking people you're ready to start development. Be prepared for some delays though. Programming is a craft and can take years to learn. Your programmer may be a bit rusty but will probably be writing "hello world" programs after school in no time.
Closed Source games like Doom 3 use the graphics card to do all the hard stuff anyhow, so your programmer will just have to get the NVidia 'API' and it will be plain sailing! Giant robot spiders, here we come!
7. The Outcome
So it's been a few years, you still have no files released or in CVS. Your programmer can't get enough time on the PC because his mother won't let him use it after 8pm. Your artist has run off with a Thai She-Male. Your project is still at '1: Pre-Bickering'...
Congratulations! You now have a successful Open Source project on Sourceforge! Pat yourself on the back, think up another idea and do it all again! See how simple it is?

Mr. Speaker, I have one question for these wise guys to constipate over: How can some thing come from no thing?
And while they digest that, Mr. Speaker, let us tell it like it is. Put these super-cerebral master debaters in some foxhole with bombs bursting all around them, and I guarantee they will not be praying to Frankenstein.
Beam me up here. My colleagues, all the education in the world is worthless without God and a little bit of common sense. And I yield back whatever we have left.
Will she still have to take her clothes off to become invisible :)
In fact, it almost seems like it was ended in such a way as to lead intentionally in to a series. (or a sequel.) Does anyone know whether such a thing was planned originally or not?

This might be the reason for me to get a dvd playback device. ;-) (If it comes out on dvd, which i hope it does.) I really don't know which story I like better, Ghost In The Shell or Battle Angel Alita... I suppose I should just count myself lucky to have found both.

You think that's bad? What about the gay sub-culture going on over at Gentoo? I don't think's it such a "sub" subculture, if you know what I mean.

If you want to post stories about Anime, please post them to AnimeFu. I certainly don't want to hear about how a bunch of lifeless dorks are obsessed with the schoolgirls on a perverted japanese kids show.
For those anime lovers, Cowboy Bebop - The Movie is being posted over in alt.binaries.anime.vcd. If you haven't seen it check it out.
Back in the early 80's, when I was about 7...my absolute favorite activity was getting up Saturday morning to watch anime. I didn't know it was called anime, but I liked it anyway.
As I grew older tho, I turned into a snob *grin* and decided that I needed a minimum level of artistic quality in order to enjoy anime. I still shake my head in disbelief every time I watch Akira.
Anyway I wrote this post because GOS had fabulous artistic merit...and there's no way to reproduce that in a weekly. It just takes too much time to hand draw all those frames.
When is the second graphic novel going to be released in english? They're taking for ever to do a stupid translation, how hard can it be?! Anybody know the release date?
When do I get to ghost hack, and can someone give me the IP of Billy boy's, the RIAA/MPAA directors', Sen. Holling's, and John Ashcroft's cyberbrains? Maybe if we have direct access to these people, we can probably distribute clue to them.
I am looking for a rectum.

The series Rahxephon has been picked up by AD Vision. For those that don't know, it's a series similar to Eva. The series is just finishing up its run in Japan, but it's almost impossible to find the subs now. I'm always hoping someone like Cartoon Network or Sci-Fi will pick up some of these better Mini-Series. That's the problem though, they like stuff like DBZ that they can rerun to death.
As in ex-loki software programmer?
I've been reading slashdot for years and have never figured why anime keeps cropping up here. Does computer geek = anime geek or does the vocal minority here simply make it appear as such?
I ask this question as a computer geek. I hate anime and know very few other computer geeks that really like it. I've known a few anime geeks in my time and sure, they used computers, but they were far from reaching the geekdom truly deserved of the title "computer geek" (whatever that means).
Basically, I'm ranting. I can sort of see how anime is "News for Nerds", but it would be quite a stretch to consider it "Stuff that matters".
3cx.org - A truly bad website.
Schweeeet. Hot grits down my pants just weren't enough. Now I can watch a tv series. Yay!
the truth is only little kids/pathetic homos/ and 30 year old virgins watch about anime.
What is it with you people and childish obsessions such as anime and legos?
Anyone know if the series will follow the movie or the manga?
Any sufficiently advanced influence is indistinguishable from control.
I just hope the TV Series keeps the spirit and personality of the manga. The movie was crap, and I'm sorry to see so many people actaully buying into hype surrounding it.
If someone is passing you on the right, you are an asshole for driving in the wrong lane.
Anyone know more? Looked all over the net for even just a scrap more info. Anyone?
P-p-p-p-p-p-p-lease coach-o-sensei!
Many of us "nerds" also have interested in science fiction, sword & sorcery / dungeons and dragons, animation (computer and anime), electronic toys (gadgets and gizmos aplenty)... etc
It's all part of our shared, socially maladjusted heritage. While you may or may not share all of these interests, it shouldn't be too difficult to be able to understand why Slashdot covers them...
Evolution: love it or leave it
you forgot the part about living happily ever after.while in jail they proceeded to maintain a business of *slutting out the bunghole*, as some may say. This became quite known all through the state and many inmates would apply for transfer to get a chance to come and dump a load of hot goo all over CmdrTaco and CowboyNeal. Little taco wore white bobby socks and tennis shoes a lot with gym shorts that showed the cheeks of his tender young behind. The inmates would all chant and whistle as Taco and Neal would walk by in the morning. They knew. The were gettin a Dell.
I tried to find some contact information on their website in order to scream at their programming director, but they seem to have strategically omitted it (or maybe I was just too pissed to see it).
But I think a network that featured the more adult anime on a regular basis (and would actually finish a series) would be great.
FYI: The best of Cowboy Bebop is supposed to be on CN next saturday (6 episodes).

that 'anime' article-icon is so cute.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but at the end of the movie, Motoko Kusanagi has a different body, right? It was a body that bateu found on the black market, right? Now I can't remember if motoko was still with section 9 or not - but I guess because bateu got her new body on the black market, then that would mean that she is no longer with section 9, right? So if motoko's not with section 9 anymore then this series can't be a follow on from the movie... can it?
And if you haven't seen the movie - you should have read the spoiler warning.
Does this make my brain look big?
The Anime section is the one that really makes me cringe. It's upstairs in the general releases since it's all, you know, cartoons, and some of it is charming fare like My Neighbor Totoro. But a lot of it is incredibly hardcore stuff - way worse than we'll allow in the real-people porn downstairs. My position on porn is that I'm fine with whatever floats your boat, as long as everyone involved is a consenting adult. Manga throws both of those rules out the window. Sure, all the boxes claim that all the characters are at least 18, but a lot of them are clearly drawn to look about 12. And there's a lot of raping. Not just run-of-the-mill raping, either - we're talking about triple-penetration rape by demons.
I consider myself a first-amendment feminist, but to be honest the anime section really makes me wrestle with that sometimes. And guys that rent the entire La Blue Girl series all at once (check out the box cover sometimes and you'll see what I mean) freak me out even worse than the guys who rent the Animal Trainer series.
Of course, this wasn't online yesterday when I submitted the story, but since the Production I.G. site linked to Bandai Entertainment for licensing outside of Asia anyway, it's not *that* surprising:
Bandai Entertainment Announces Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
"I'm not anti-anything, I'm anti-everything, it fits better." - Sole
The TV series looks way more faithful to the manga at least in style... which already beats that Manga-Entertainment-fanboy-whore of a movie. Can't wait to see how it turns out!
Bandai Entertainment USA just announced that they got the video and BROADCAST rights to the Ghost In The Shell TV series.

I've got GitS on every major media format from the past 20 years sans Betamax and RCA CED, though I doubt it came out on CED
--- Do you believe in the day?
I hope they get Hiroyuki Kitakubo to direct it, instead of Mamoru Oshii. Kitakubo directed the Playstation GitS videogame opening, which IMHO looked way cooler than the movie and was more 'true' to the series. Oshii's a great director, but he's better off not screwing with someone else's story. His stuff is never faithful to the original.

This comes directly from this site, titled "True Porn Clerk Stories." I suspect that it was plagarized due to the fact that the woman who writes it wants to write professionally - and wouldn't have misspelled "disgusting."
Personally I'd like to wait for the translation.
for anyone who has watched Speed Racer, there is a right way, and a wrong way to translate anime.
