Apple Releases Disc Recording Update 1.0
micah_lanier writes "From Software Update: The Disc Recording Update delivers additional iTunes and Finder support for a number of LaCie, EZquest, and Iomega CD-R devices. For a specific list of supported devices, visit the Apple CD-R Compatibility site."
It's also available via software update panel in the preferences application.
Surprisingly, it does not require a reboot.

I was wrong, rebooting is required - for whatever reason, I wasn't warned that a reboot would be required before I installed the patch.
Whatever...

Interestingly, the compatibility page lists exactly zero scsi drives. Why do they wish to be like that. Im guessing they are being lay to the z here.
Rebooting is required to load the drivers into kernel space. Say you have an unsupported drive - to save memory and not cause trouble burning is disabled in finder, etc. We want to detect our newly supported drive and then we can enable such things - could probably do it on the fly, but it's always good to reboot if one's ego can handle it.

Did for me, I think you just glossed over it...
I really like Software Update. It just plain works. I'm installing the Disc recording Update as I write this, I can't wait to see if it will finally allow me to burn iso's I get from various places, not just Mac specific iso's. I can't seem to burn FreeBSD iso's using desktop software (DiskCopy), is there anything in Fink I can install into X that allows for full-featured burning on a SuperDrive? I haven't looked yet (yep, I'm a lazy bastard).

Does anyone know if there is any planned support for
Neo Jukebox on OS X. Even a generic usb-ide driver would d0, if possible.
I don't really think there's much to comment on. When I purchased my CD-RW, I printed out the compatability page and brought it shopping. If it wasn't on the list, I didn't even consider it. I'd bet most Mac users follow this pattern and thus, not a lot of unsupported hardware in the field.
Besides, what could be more exciting for end users than device drivers?
Not at my Mac at the moment. But normally when a reboot is required a little blue icon of the Apple power key is shown next to the update, denoting that installation requires a reboot.

My shopping experience was a bit different. While I too carried the shopping list with me, I found that the fastest drives were not on the list. I then contacted an Apple Store where they were helpful in letting me know what would be on the upcomming CDR update for OS X.
By using this method, I was able to buy a fast drive that was unsupported in OS X, usable in OS 9, but knew it would be soon available to OS X as well.
I only came here to do two things; kick some ass, and drink some beer...looks like we're almost out of beer.
...I then contacted an Apple Store where they were helpful...
To live in an area with an Apple store would be bliss. <Sigh>
This prompted me to buy a refurbished Matsushita DVD/CD-R/CD-RW for $50 which I tried the very same trick with, and it works beautifully. Apparently there was an issue with the USB bridge, but not the actual burner mechanism itself.
Any time an update is displayed with a left-pointing-triangle-in-a-circle next to it it requires a reboot.

Now, instead of pulling a freeze then a dirty great kernel panic, iTunes recognizes my Lacie USB CD-RW (weirdly, after turning it on, then off then back on again :/ ).
The cool thing is the update works transparently with Titanium, where as with OS 9 the two sets of drivers would often screw around with each other.
These two points together with lots of other little things (uummmm, flurry...)make me steadily more comfortable with the whole X thang. peace.
I mean, who doesn't regularly check software update manually anyway?? but maybe I'm mental because I'm used to looking after loads of big servers and I check for security updates daily. what would be good would be a discussion of what has changed. I use Toast - will this update affect me?
My HP CD Writer isn't supported. I bought it before I bought my Mac. But, the reason I bought it is because I thought it would be supported. It's USB and it boasts Bondi iMac styling, so I thought it was obvious HP was marketing it to the Mac market.
I'm doing what you did from now on.
