Actually, Apple has been using the major.minor.teeny versioning system for a while.

Check out this article on system 7.5.5
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=
I worked in ISP tech support during the System 7.x.x and Open Transport 1.x.x days. It was a nighmare explaining the versioning system to users... "No no no, 7.1.1 is not '7.11'. 7.1.1 is an OLDER version then 7.5.
"Can of worms? The can is open... the worms are everywhere."
I beleive it originated in MacOS 6.x. There was never a MacOS 6.1, but there were MacOS 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.0.3, 6.0.5, and 6.0.8, as far as I can remember.
It was probably the most used in the 7.1 series tho. As far as I can remember, there was 7.0.0-7.0.1, 7.1.0-7.1.2, 7.5.0-7.5.5, and 7.6.0-7.6.1.
So yeah, it has nothing to do with free/open software. In fact, my Macintosh IIci, bought in 1989 for $5000 (!), came with 6.0.3.
Software Update defaults to checking weekly for an update, so a lot of people might not have found out about it for a few days at least. This update has been rumored for 2-3 days now, and I for one found out it was finally released because of this article.

Besides, the article is in the Apple section, so it's not bothering any

Hey, finally the "real operating system" guy is back! Cool!
Wasn't there a System 5.0.2 or something like that? I can't find reference to it on the web. I definitely remember the 6.0.x releases, though. That was some good stuff. Mmmm... Multifinder.
I installed that puppy right away, instead of after the usual cautious waiting period, because I've been having such troubling difficulties with 10.2 (far fewer panics than 10.1.x, but a tendency for USB-connected outboard-DAC audio from iTunes to lose sync and get into a chronic stuttering mode, and uselessness of 39160-connected SCSI drives).
I haven't had a chance yet to test for the previous difficulties, but a brand-new booboo emerged when I rebooted after the upgrade: a volume I have on an ACARD 6880M (a two-disk hardware mirror) is being mounted twice. It looks (on very preliminary investigation) as if maybe one volume being seen is the mirror, and the other is one of the underlying disks of the mirror; but maybe I'm seeing both underlying disks and not the mirror. Either way, it kind of bites, and I think I'm going to have to run explicitly on a single disk until this is resolved.
Maybe it's my fault -- somewhere in there I loaded up the version 1.3 kext from ACARD in place of the (dated earlier, but numbered later) 1.4 version which came with Jagwire. Or maybe nobody ever tests mirroring, because all the kids want to do is stripe. Sigh.

I agree, and the wierd thing is, when I went into Software Update to have it check for these updates, it was off on both of the computers I just updated to 10.2. It was always on by default before with 'weekly' checking, and I didn't turn it off - so I might not have know until I saw news about it, or had I decided to check my software update at some point and realized it was disabled....
> In fact, most Windows installations are running without any updates!
Tell that to all the hapless winXP users who never turn off auto-update (on by default).

Windows works right out of the box! In fact, most Windows installations are running without any updates!
Really? Then explain this. I installed XP to my computer.
1) Soundcard broke.
2) Created a user account that I did not have previously on my computer (has since been disabled)
3) Windows update pops up and asks me to install *VITAL* security updates. To date I have 12 windows hotfixes installed. And this computer has only been running for 3 weeks.
4) Also note that windows has decided it will no longer play nice with my router, and does not handle the DHCP rollovers.
Doesn't work out of the box for me, and this has been one of my better windows experiences. My friend's laptop will not disply his computer on the desktop (Explorer says it's there, but it's not). Lovely stuff. When my iBook comes back from the shop (nasty run in with water and a power cord) it will once again become my primary machine and I will use my PC only for the stuff that I need to do involving Maple (since it was easy enough to get off of Kazza)

I would, but the college uses maple and sends the assignments as maple worksheets.

You probably didn't have the Mail application at the root level of the Applications folder (/Applications/Mail.app) before installing the update. Never move Apple installed applications from their original path!
prebinding now happens at launch of the executable if it needs it so for most Apps after installing needs one launch to reprebind the functions together and it will make it faster to launch the second time.
Not very Mac-like, is it?
;>) and would still function perfectly.
I know Mac OS since system 4.3, and until those badly ported DOS/Win Apps appeared, an Application was one file that could easily be moved around (your floppy disk
Up until X that became more and more of no-no. You installed and app and better not moved any part of it afterwords.
Finally, Mac OS X reintroduced the nice one-app-is-one-file feature in the NeXTish way which I really like. But for Woz' sake, why on earth do the apps have to be in the Applications folder to be found? Apple even ships a locate db with the system, so don't tell me they wouldn't have an idea how to find their stuff after I moved it...
I installed it on my PB G4 without incident. To be specific, I was running a clean install of 9.2.2 and 10.2 and then got 10.2.1 via Software Update. So far I have observed no problems whatsoever. I checked MacFixIt and I don't see any other reported issues of this type. Yet, anyway.

You like your Macintosh better than me, don't you Dave? Dave? Can you hear me Dave?
Yes I can confirm it. The new mini mail app you see is an .nib file (nibs control look and feel). Mail tries to load but can't find the interface and so it crashes.
You can see this error in console.
Go to apple's web page download the update and reinstall.
How exactly would you expect to get help with that kind of limited information?
Anyway try building up to print slowly.
Uninstall all printers
install your printer via cups and print a test page
-- if it works keep going
-- if it doesn't work then drop down to lpr and lp and try from the command line. Remember to send a postscript file for testing
I've lost many many hours of productivity to getting linux to run nicely on many different machines. I hope that it's improved somewhat, however, I will be waiting for my second harddrive and then installing QNX (www.qnx.com) to play arround with that for a while. Besides, I can't get rid of XP entirely yet, because Haxial (www.haxial.com) doesn't have a linux version of KDX yet (they need I think 20 people to buy it and give them an email with the purchase that they would also like a linux version).

Yes! A Real Operating System. Windows! Windows is cool; and by cool, I mean totally sweet. There are no updates for it today! That's what I call Real Ultimate Power!!! In fact Windows is sooooo sweet I want to crap my pants.
(Just ask Mark!)

I had this problem too, and it was because I had moved Mail. I actually appear to have been able to correct it by hand by opening the new package under Applications and my old package that was under Applications/network, and dragging things from the new one into the old one by hand. YMMV.
Well if your desire is just to complain and not do anything about the problem I don't think you'll find /. the most sympathetic crowd. But I hate to tell you something all of Darwin is "some freeware package" you can download it for free from Apple/opendarwin including for non apple platforms (like x86). What you paid for was the pretty gui like wrapping CUPS inside of printmonitor. But make no mistake everything in your OS is utilizing low level freeware services.
My guess is that the iTunes package possibly contains the updated CD burning package for the system.
Time for some tasty Shiner Bock!
