Mac OS X 10.3.2 Update available

iumacboy writes "Apple has released the Mac OS X 10.3.2 Update (not yet active), weighing in at 38.2MB and available via Software Update. According to Apple: 'The 10.3.2 Update delivers enhanced functionality and improved reliability for Mac OS X v10.3 "Panther" and is recommended for all users. Key enhancements include: Improved file sharing and directory services for mixed Mac and PC networks, more robust printing to PostScript printers, improved font management, updated Mail and Address Book applications, new ATI and NVIDIA graphics drivers, FileVault, FireWire 800, WebDAV and USB Printing. Improvements from Update 10.3.1 previous standalone security updates." Also, Apple released Battery Update 1.1 for some of the newer portable Macs.

    The update seems to make the fan kick in at a lower CPU temperature on my 12" PowerBook. I don't know about other models. I'm guessing this is a good thing, because I wouldn't want my baby overheating!

      Well I've just done the upgrade on my 12" PB and I'm still waiting for the fan to go off. It's reasonably cool today (42C yesterday) and the case isn't hot but the fan goes on and on.....

      Same here. The fan is kicking in at around 20 degress lower on my 15" PowerBook but it seems to have a new speed setting. Usually when the fan came on before it was at full speed, this new setting is rather lower and IMHO the machine is feeling cooler to the touch in normal use.

      Hope this is actually Apple doing some adjustments to the hardware because they are always welcome.

      On a side note, my PowerBook's battery now properly reports the Ah as being 4200 rather than previously 2900. This is a welcome change.

      I find my fan already kicks in earlier than on 10.2... and it's noisy on my 12" iBook G3.

      Yeah, put me down for a big "me too" on that. The fan's been running pretty much nonstop on my original (867MHz) 12" PBG4 since I updated... and man, is it loud! Anything that puts the processor over 1% usage, it seems, causes the fan to start up. Granted, it ran a lot before the update, but never this much.

      By the way, what are you using to check your CPU temperature? I just found this utility today: Temperature Monitor. I'd been under the impression, from programs like MenuMeters, that my PowerBook didn't have an internal thermometer, but apparently it does--it's just not very well publicized. Try this in the terminal:
      ioreg -l | grep -C10 temp
      This fan is really starting to get on my nerves. I thought Macs were supposed to be the quiet ones? Here's to hoping Apple figures out a way to make these things run cooler in the future.

      It does seem a bit weird, that on the day Apple releases an update to make your battery last longer, it then releases an OS update which will probably make your battery last for less time because the fan is always on.

      I'm hoping too. My ~/Library/Mail folder is 372MB and I'm getting long pauses (spinning beachball) as it re-indexes when I do an 'all messages' search.

      I'll try it today, I have to test it prior to deployment.

      I think you mean Fahrenheit. For me, the the new CPU temp triggering the fan on is 52 degrees C, and it will shut off when temperature has fallen back below 47 degrees C, according to Temperature Monitor.app. The old numbers respectively were 64 degrees C and 60 degrees C, IIRC.

      Actually this rather sucks for me, because with my 1st generation 12" PBook the fan actually runs most of the time (well, close at least), and thus the whole box feels much more noisy. Granted, little below 60 degrees C was a bit hot, but never any _real_ problem for me.

      Yup, I meant Fahrenheit, although I work in Celsius. :) Just spent way too long in the US and know that most of the slashdot community comes from those shores. Have not tested it with my 12" PBook yet (first gen). Hopefully its not as loud as yours.

    Interesting that the battery update is for the 12" iBook and not the 14" iBook. I just ordered a 12" iBook from Yellow Dog Linux (which, btw, are shipping the X video driver for their Linux on Friday), so I will be installing these updates this weekend.

    Installed and booted no problem. Ran Verify Disk Permission and it didn't report any problems

    I did notice that 'browsing' for network volumes now results in the mounted network volumes also showing up on the desktop.

    Despite not being mentioned in the release notes, Safari was also updated to v1.1.1. However, the only difference I can see is that the title attribute now shows up as a tooltip (which is a good thing, granted). Dave Hyatt's weblog lists many other changes post-v1.1, but in my tests they didn't make it in to v1.1.1. Such a shame.

      I'm not sure what you mean. v1.1.1 came in the update, but as Dave Hyatt says in his weblog (in his reply to me):
      The update to WebKit is very minor (a few key fixes and the title support). It does not contain any of the fixes I have been blogging about.

      I'm also running 1.1.1 with 10.3.1. WebKit may have been updated, but it's just a framework, not an application. WebKit is not Safari.

      Safari was already updated to 1.1.1. The OS 10.3.2 update installs previous security patches. Bringing Safari to 1.1.1 was a previous patch (the cookie patch I believe).

      Safari was updated to v1.1.1 in a separate update several weeks ago. If you missed that one, it was likely included caught by v10.3.2.

    As an aside, I can never tell if Apple's QA procedures for these releases are crap, or if it's just that the Apple using community are noisy bastards as soon as something doesn't work.

    Anyway, leave it a few days. 10.2.7 says so.

      Um, I agree. But which do you think it is? Crap QA or noisy userbase? I actually have no idea--but I've seen plenty of both. Non-issues get screamed about, but the iTunes deleting bug was pretty spectacular.

    I totally agree on the Network Browsing in Panther, the interface has changed(to worse), locks up often, and attaching to a domain or workgroup requires changing Netinfo.

      Nope. With more than 256 MB RAM, 10.3.2 will still black out on boot if you have a flashed PC Geforce2 card. Mine is a 64 MB PNY Verto Geforce2 MX400. Guess I'll have to stick with my old 16 MB ATI Rage 128 Pro until I can afford a Radeon 9000 or a Geforce4 MX

      No, you are unfortunate. I have 768 MB RAM and a flashed Asus 7100 GeForce 2 MX (32 MB RAM). 10.3.2 is running fine -- I just put my Rage 128 away in a drawer.

      I deleted my Extensions.kextcache and rebooted with the 64 MB Geforce2 MX400. Wow, it got to the login screen.. great! Or so I thought. Once I was on the Desktop I moved windows and all i saw were fragmented outlines. ARGH! I even left the room and the monitor went to sleep.. when I woke it I got a kernel panic. The only way to get "proper" behavior is to boot into safe mode (Shift Key at boot-time). Now I the windows act okay but I may not be getting full Quartz Extreme performance. WTF?

      This is a bit OT, but I bought myself an ASUS 7100 a while ago in the hopes that I can flash it w/ Mac firmware. After trying for a while and getting blank screens, I gave up, flashed it back, and resigned myself to having a decent backup vidcard for my Win/AMD PC's.

      So, if you read this, could you tell me what you did to flash it?

      I know there was a web site on this topic and I followed the instructions there. No dice.

      Perhaps my problem is that the flash trick doesn't work with PCI GF2MXs or older macs, which I believe was implied on the web site.

      I have an AGP version, so I don't have any experience with the PCI version. However, here's what I did.

      Created a Windows boot floppy with the nVidia flasher on it plus a copy of the Mac ROMs for my card (Twinview, ROM version 1075). Stuck the card in a PC and booted it. Ran the flasher and backed up the existing ROM from the card onto the floppy. Then re-ran the flasher and flashed the Mac ROM onto the card.

      After the flash, the card went into the Sawtooth and it worked perfectly (well until 10.3, at any rate).

      I know there were problems with Quartz Extreme and PCI video cards in general -- although there seems to be info about the PCI versions of the GF2MX at www.xlr8yourmac.com. It seems you need to boot into OpenFirmware and execute some commands to force it to recognise the card on the PCI bus. Have a look, you should be able to get it working!

    Well I was hoping this update was going to make browsing networks better, try again. I am at home right now and I have a WinXP machine with a couple of shares. The finder saw the WinXP machine, which it never used to do. Double clicking on the WinXP machine's icon brought up a message "The alias Rainier could not be opened, because the original item could not be found" (I name my computers after Cascade volcanos). Clicking okay on the dialog would not close the dialog. I relaunched the finder and tried connecting via the "Connect to server" menu item. It took 2 minutes to connect, made the finder unresponsive, and made the dock unresponsive. A quick alt-cmd-esc, relauch the finder and everything is okay.
    It might be wise to wait a few days....

      Same problem here. I can see all the smb shares on my XP Pro Machine, and only 2 out 4 on my Win 2003 Server.

      I too, get the " ....could not be opened, could not be found"

      This is more than a little problem, in my opinion. I expected 10.3.2 to resolve the issues, but so far, I can't tell that anything has changed in regards to networking.

      Strange that this improvement in Panther, was something that wasn't broken in Jaguar.

      Ok, Apple this situation is getting critical.

      Shares are troublesome on my iBook if stored in favourites as "smb://sharename/" but work perfectly as "cifs://sharename/" - have you tried using both variants?

      Yep, but these problems have *ALWAYS* been there. The usual cause is an annoying interaction between the automounter and the Finder. (The finder creates a .DS_Store file that prevents the automounter from mounting the remote machines, usually if the Windows machine is shut down while mounted).

      The solution I've found: go to /private/var/automount/WORKGROUP/SOMEXPMACHINE - if the directory exists but is empty, you should be able to ls -a and see the %!^@ .DS_Store file. Delete the file and the directory (don't rm -rf unless you like living dangerously: rm .DS_Store and then rmdir SOMEXPMACHINE). killall -HUP automount, and relaunch the finder. Everything starts to work again, right up until the next time you shut down your XP machine.

      I'm having the same SMB problems I was having pre-update. I can mount the shares individually using Cmd-K, just like I always could, but using the Network icon in a finder window doesn't show anything but a "Servers" icon that only contains the local machine. My Samba server doesn't appear at all.

      I don't have any problems with this at home, but get exactly the same problem as you do at work. I put it down to the work machines windows lm names not being the same as their DNS names (they are mostly DHCP'd).

      For e.g. I have a Windows XP box at work named MACBOY which my Mac can see in the network browser, but it's DNS name will be dhcp-2-1-xx where xx depends on the IP address it picks up from DHCP. The Mac won't pick up any shares from MACBOY. I suppose I could test this by adding an entry for MACBOY in the netinfo host database.

    Yeah... after I enabled filevault (back before 7B85 was even officially released!) and had to sell my soul to get it disabled and my data back out of a shambles (I have backups, but that thing corrupted everything), I'm also going to wait until enabling filevault.

      I didn't read or agree to the EULA, but that's because it wasn't even displayed. When you install software updates via SSH, you are never offered or even know the existence of the EULAs.

      Reminds me of when software in CD sleeves had the sticker that read "By breaking this seal, you agree to the terms of use." By cutting the bottom of the sleeve, you could use the software with out breaking the seal, thus using said software w/o agreeing to the terms.

      Um, excuse me? Whoever told you that you need a license for software or violate copyright law is full of crap. The only restrictions that apply are those give all itmes covered by copyright - you can do pretty much whatever you want with the software, just not copy it and give it to your friends.

      UK law is ambiguous on the issue. Clearly if you're given something, or bought it, you have an implied right to use it granted to you by the copyright holder if the copyright holder has authorized you.

      By using SoftwareUpdate you ask Apple to copy a file to your system, and Apple is happy to do that. By using (note, just using, which you have an implied right to do after buying something) Mac OS, Apple's software that it gave you copies itself into memory as needed, as intended by Apple.

      I don't believe you "need" a license to run software you've bought, or even to install it in the way the software is set up to be installed. But obviously it's much easier to use something in an unlicensed way - making a back-up copy, or manually installing something on your hard drive, etc.

      Until you've agreed that it is licensed software, you own it from first sale doctrine. The license agreement takes away rights you had. E.g. if the AOL CDs you get have a license restriction against using the CD for any other purpose than for installing AOL's software on your computer, it means nothing unless you agree to it.

      However, even disagreeing with the license agreement may constitute acknowledgment of the existence of a license requirement. If that's true, then you're stripped (of your rights) if you do and stripped if you don't. Then your only protection then is ignorance.

      IANAL, and am expecting an IAAL response to tell me how wrong I am.

      So, any unusual gotchas in these EULAs?

      Other countries, such as the UK, don't have this law, and so you need a license to makes those copies.

      So if a particular software title doesn't come with any license at all, you don't have a right to use it?

      Sadly that tells us next to nothing about graphics card driver updates and the nitty gritty details that we all need. For instance, is my GeForce 4MX performance back up to Jaguar levels on my PowerMac? I can't check.

      Having friends at Apple also allows me to know changes they are making. I know there was more than 1 issue fixed with Mail, yet they only display one issue.

      The knowledgebase article should contain all information that could affect any user, so that sys admins and the like can know what is being changed without resorting to taking the installer apart. We already have the small blurb in the Software Update window, so give us the complete change list please Apple.

    I'm really disappointed in the lack of sensationalist responses to this story. When I installed:
    • My PowerBook instantaneously caught fire, despite the other reports of increased fan activity
    • As soon as I extinguished the flames, iTunes started downloading and playing all the pop "music" available from iTMS. Charged to my visa, of course.
    • The volume selector somehow moved all the way to full power, and was no longer controllable.
    • My "Documents" folder was instantly transformed into a FileVault archive to which I didn't have the password.
    • IE reclaimed "default browser" status, and began popping up Shockwave porn ads all over the place, much to the dismay of the elderly folks in the room.
    Oh, whoops, it installed just great. You go ahead and try now ;-)

    I can't find this documented anywhere, but they fixed Terminal.app as well! When 10.3 came out, they removed the "Use option key as meta key" checkbox from the Terminal Window settings. They've re-added in in 10.3.2! Now I can have multiple windows open in BitchX again and alt/option+# between them again! Praise jobs for restored functionality!

      It was moved to the "Window" section in the window settings prefs in Panther. I've been using option as my meta key in Panther since the dev releases.

      A quick look at by backup from 10.3.1 says Terminal was 1.4.1. 10.3.2's Terminal is also 1.4.1.

      Mail w/Panther has sounds associated with specific actions. Zoom/jet when 'sent' messages are done going out; simple chime when a new mail check completes without bringing anything in, and a bong/pong when there is a new mail as a result of a check.

      Panther Mail had a bad habit of bonging when there was no new mail...false alarm thing. It should only bong when new mail comes in (not deleted junk, etc.).

      Supposedly the false positives are corrected.

      Don't hold me to this, but I could have sworn my very large list of IMAP folders actually updates with new mail when courier+maildrop filters a message into one of the folders *without* a "Synchronize" or "Offline/Online". Very cool stuff!

    Yeah... after I enabled filevault (back before 7B85 was even officially released!) and had to sell my soul to get it disabled and my data back out of a shambles (I have backups, but that thing corrupted everything), I'm also going to wait until enabling filevault.

    I'm not surprised. If it is new, it will most likely have issues unfortunately due to the size of Microsoft noise making community, aka Paul Therrot, any problems that do exist in the Windows world are blamed on a voodoo curse, possible "virus" from linux users and right down the list, behind accusing Al Qaeda, will be, "possibly a bug, will be fixed in the next service pack".

    Most people I know don't really need to use it, unless you're a teenager with a massive porn collection and you don't want your parents to find out OR you're a "International man of mystery", most users will find very little use for it.

    The update seems to break 3rd party kernel extensions. The update unloaded all of my kexts and prevents them from being reloaded. This breaks uControl and SideTrack. Only bug found so far on deploying to a PowerBook G4 15" (Gigabit Ethernet) and a PowerMacintosh G4 450 (Sawtooth).

      I'm using both uControl and SideTrack, on my 15" PowerBook G4 FW800, with 10.3.2, and it all works fine. Maybe you just need to get newer versions? I know I updated uControl a couple of days ago.

      The problem for some people (myself included) is that the installer for uControl 1.4 blocks you from installing on 10.3.2. It reports a bogus message about requiring 10.3.x (!). I used Pacifist to circumvent the version check and force install it. It's working fine now.

      I think we'll have to wait for an update from MacPlay to make the game to work with Quicktime 6.4. (See MacPlay's NOLF2 support page.

      In the meantime, I'm rebooting from an external Firewire drive with 10.2.8 / QT 6.3 if I want to play NOLF2.

    For anyone wondering if this update fixed the the numerous video card problems that came with 10.3.0-10.3.1 the answer is a resounding YES!

    I can personally verify that the xclaim vr pro is once again working and the rage 128 continues to work. I've also read on the apple discussion boards that this update fixes the nasty 256 MB problem with certain nvidia cards. All in all it seems to restore functionality of all the video cards that were suppose to be supported in 10.3 to begin with. :)

    yay, I am back to two monitor goodness!

    For those who were curious and hopeful (I was so hopeful I went and early adopted this update :-) ), Mail.app still does not check IMAP folders other than your primary inbox when automatically checking or when 'Get New Mail' is used. You still have to 'Synchronize' or go 'Offline' and 'Online' again to force it to check.

    (Note that this is with Fastmail IMAP, though I don't think that it makes a difference).

    Sigh - it's back to choosing between easy and automatic mail checking and automatic filtering.

      Not for me. Works just great. Actually works a bit too well, since a few of my mailboxes have 6000+ messages in them and the server is an old mbox UW-IMAP machine. The sysadmin has actually asked that I set the automatic check interval higher. Apparently I'm responsible for their load peaks.

      Anyway. Here's me:
      --UW-IMAP of some unknown but archaic and annoying version.
      --10.3.1 (now .2) running Mail.app

      The parent's problem is actually when you use Maildir folders. I believe that UW-IMAP impementations use mbox and are a little better at detecting changes.

      Mail.app has never done this properly for me. I just tried:

      1. Deleting and recreating my account.
      2. Turning off SSL.
      3. Checking the "Automatically synchronize changed mailboxes"
      4. Adding an "inbox" prefix.

      ...in lots of combinations, and none of them work. It is still the case that if I get mail that ends up in my inbox and mail that is filtered to one of my folders, only the one in my inbox shows up when I click 'Get New Mail'.

      I guess it works for some and not others. Here is me:

      OS X 10.3.2 (never worked in any previous version either)
      FastMail

    Awesome. Just a note, for users of the iBook SE (FireWire) that had issues because 10.3.1 wouldn't let them change their displays ColorSync profile resulting in a horridly oversaturated image, it's been fixed now.

    No more booting into classic to launch it's monitor control panel and switching it from there. Good times, glad to know that Apple does occasionally listen.

    Rebooted fixed permissions and rebooted again.

    Boot up time for me is the exact same or so small I can't tell the difference.

    iPhoto, iTunes and the rest of the iApps load alot quicker.

    Able to find all our windows server and connect to it.

    All items in the dock only bounce about twice now.

    OpenGL effects in iTunes now run at 30 FPS almost constantly now. Before the highest it would go would be 28 FPS and it wouldn't even stay there very long.

    The sleep light now tends to not breath as deeply when and in sleep mode. It also has dimmed abit as well.

    Can't tell you about the fan or email yet. My email server won't authinecate and I haven't got off my PB long enough to allow it cool down to test the fan.

    Very good update.

      Try rebooting again. The first time after a major system upgrade (kernel replacement versus just a security patch), it probably invalidates the kext cache, so it has to probe to see what all is there.
      Regarding app lauches, with new system libraries it would probably have to fix the prebindings, which would be a similar situation to above. If they aren't faster on subsequent launches (after a reboot; of course they will be faster if they are still cached in RAM), I would be surprised and like to see objective data.

      I'd like to know if that makes no difference.

      You know what, I think my earlier post was crap. I installed it on my work machine and noticed no perceptible difference in startup or app startup times the first time I booted. It may still do those things, but they don't appear to affect startup times. I'm installing on my home machine right now, but I expect a similar experience.

      So, why would your machine all of a sudden slow down? You could try to force OS X to rebuild the caches by running
      sudo rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions.kextcache /System/Library/Extensions.mkext
      You can also run "dmesg" to see if there are any error messages showing up during boot.

      If you are still having problems, you would be better off posting to the Machintoshian Achaia. There are some pretty helpful folks over there and it is much more responsive to these kinds of problems then SlashDot.

    Unfortunately, the updated graphics drivers do not fix a standing issue with SimCity 4 that was introduced (or at least seriously exacerbated) in Panther. Since upgrading to 10.3, the game shows no shadows, building placement outlines, effect rings, or ANY "distressed" buildings (all you see is the ground tiles with no building on top. Aspyr said that this is a "bug with the ATI drivers in Panther" but since these new drivers in 10.3.2 don't make ANY improvement in the game, I'm thinking that Aspyr is full of crap.

    Otherwise, I haven't noticed any problems with the update.

    Was it the video card driver issue causing the problem with Chimera/Camino's "big blank squares" problem (after rendering a page with a lot of JavaScript, Camino blanks certain parts of the screen, that then show again when a link somewhere is clicked.)? This was a new bug with Panther, and the only mention of it on the Camino forums I saw had some buck-passing from the Mozilla team to Apple.

    My ATI Xclaim 3D Plus, which was supported in 10.2.8, is not supported in Panther. Apple had been providing the driver. Apparently they're not anymore as it remains unsupported in 10.3.2. ATI refuses to provide a driver saying that the card is too old. It is, btw, still for sale at bestbuy.com.

    Well I took the dangerous path and upgraded...only one small problem, the installer did the down load of both the battery update and the 10.3.2 update, and did the optimize to 100%, and then hanged. So had to do a force quit and restart, and everything seems to be OK. Still checking though. My Mac is a 600Mhz dual USB iBook. Good luck;-)

    Unlike some of the newer PB's out there my TiBook fan only turns on after about 15 mins or so and then turns off during normal surfing and using iApps. So it's not really much of a change for me in that dept. Mail works fine. It's Earthlink's mail server which isn't working. It finally authinecated long enough to get my 40 emails of spam and then it died again. The Preference menu now flows more easily now as well.

    Yes, I'm having problems with this latest update. In fact, I'm in the process of reloading my 12" powerbook as I type this. What happened? Well, I was working on another computer and I wanted to hear this Delerium song called "Truly", it's really good. So, I turned to my 12" powerbook, plugged in an external 1394 drive, not firewire 800, and almost instantly got a kernel panic. I'm not sure at what point the installer was at, it was behind my mail.app that i was taking notes in. I rebooted and the poor thing just wouldn't boot up. It'd bring up some of the network services, like ftp, but it didn't bring up ssh. It never got to a gui either. Repairing the disk and permissions didn't help. This is only the second kernel panic I've gotten since i bought this kick ass, best laptop I've ever had last Feb, but damn, the last one just required a reboot and disk check! At least OS X automatically imports your system prefs when you reload a new system on the old HDD, unlike trying to import your prefs in windows after reloading right over the top. XP on my inspiron took a whole day to reload and get back to custom settings. Oh, there's the chime of my installer rebooting, looks like everything's back up and running now. Hmm..... took about 15 minutes, sweeeet. =D But man wtf was up with that? Time to try it again...

    In my experience, places like Macfixit, MacResource, and MacInTouch either have two philosophies for the way they handle updates:

    1) Report all the news on possible bugs as matter of factly, display all reports of bugs as they were emailed to the site, and do no filtering whatsoever of any information, despite the fact that most of the posts are drivel that no one else in the world can replicate and may have missed something that they claim to have tried (not everyone is logical).
    2) Tilt the story to sensationalize the fact that there were tons of reports of problems to generate readership and scare people.

    Now I can't fault any sources really if their motivation is #1, but frankly, this doesn't help either. I work in support, and I also take a gander at our users email list which we actually run. There are weekly emails of builds and patches of our software that are bad because they would be applied and suddely a whole bunch of problems would occur. Yet mysteriously they never would report them to support, and I couldn't make happen what they had happen.

    I'll see emails on these site screaming at apple for making crappy bug fixes and complaining about issues that make their life a living hell, but I don't see anyone else saying this. I also see a lot of "me too's." The firewire 800 issue also saw a lot of people complaining about firewire 400 drives, which Apple claims are not experiencing problems. I'm having problems believing the me too's about firewire 400 because not enough people are having problems on those drives, and I have a general distrust of users who claim they worked on a problem and found it to be something when in fact they missed 2 or 3 other possibilities.

    Everyone who submits an email to these places should contact a support rep. Unfortunately, support costs money these days, which sucks and I do sympathize, but on the opposite side of the coin you have to make sure this kind of stuff is real and not FUD.

      Odd; I'm using automatic CPU speed for on battery use and 'highest' for on mains use. Activity monitor doesn't show anything using the CPU in the background. I've rerun this particular version of Xbench (v1.1.3) several times on this machine with comparable results. Unfortunately the xbench results comparison site is down at the moment so I can't see what the average is.

      Xbench is giving confusing results. My inital figure was for 'reduced' performance. I just re-ran the bench on the highest and automatic settings, and got 44.29 and 30.65. However it seems to take very little for the final figure to waver dramatically - I don't understand the weightings here. My iBook is an 800mhz w/640MB Ram.... as the only other thing running at the time of my first bench was Mail.app, I'm inclined to put it down to bad benchmarking.

      After a few more runs through I'm seeing some consistency. Performance on batteries is down, but on highest it's up, averaging 31 and 44 respectively. Although the Total result that Xbench is giving me doesn't seem to add up given that all my component results are up...

    ya ya i know-running the latest & greatest on a 7 year old machine aint that bright, and i certainly know that 10.3 is not supported on the Gossamer. but xpostfacto managed to launch it and i had been happily running Panther for a month. the 10.3.1 update worked fine but this latest one did me in. upon reboot i got the "grey screen of death", which seems to be video card related. re-install required :/
    ps: the reinstall worked great even with all the ram [512 mb], cards [usb, radeon, and asante NIC], hard drives [total of 3], and scsi drives [cdrom and yamaha burner] still attached. props to xpostfacto and the power of beige.

      This is fixed with XPostFacto 3.0a10 (just released on the 20th). My beige now works great with 10.3.2.

    Alas I still see the problem.

    I just wish the Mozilla and Apple developers would stop passing the buck and actually get the problem fixed!

    Well, apparently I posted less than a minute ago so here's some light relief to make up for the crappy rendering in Chimera/Camino. (BTW is it just me or is Chimera still a great deal more solid and less buggy than Camino? What's the deal with that? It's not like Camino has any major new features except that search thing and that's a PITA in practice because you only have to brush your fingers across the keyboard and suddenly you've lost your place. Damn it! Damn you all to hell! Well I turned it off! Off I say!)

    I never had problems with my FW 400 (OX 911 chipset) before 10.3 and the 10.3.1 update did nothing. I have updated the firmware, but the drive becomes unresponsive after a few hours. The only solution is a reboot.

    These aren't me too cases, even Oxford acknowledges that there are problems.

    You sound kind of ignorant when you spout pure bullshit like you are now.

    You sound kind of ignorant when you attack me and don't analyze what I just said.

    #1 I have experience in supporting bugs. This comes from my experience. If you can't see this in what I just said then tis you who sounds ignorant.

    #2 admittedly I didn't say this, but I have a firewire 400 drive with absolutely no problems. It's some generic drive too. ZERO problems.

    Oxford barely admitted anything, "there are problems" is exactly the extent to which things were admitted, but frankly that's a weak statement that we support people use to keep the user calm while we figure out what the hell they are talking about.

    You have a problem? I feel for you. But based on your information so far I have no real basis for establishing its 10.3 yet. Why? I don't know you and I dunno if you are a shmoe or a tech guru. I deal with shmoes every day and each one of them SWEARS they didn't change anything between yesterday and today except upgrades the software, but then I find out they are lying and find a setting which they switched which, in their situation, shouldn't have been turned on.

    I'm not saying you are a liar, I'm just saying that the resource sites are not reliable on bugs like this because all they do is regurgitate emails of screaming users who insist the problem is someone elses fault. As a support rep I merely must remain skeptical.

    Since everyone seems to be having mostly positive experiences, I thought I would let it be known that 10.3.2 rendered my 550MHz TiBook unbootable. Reinstalling 10.3.0 completely fixed the problem (and it still works fine after updating to 10.3.1). I haven't tried putting 10.3.2 on again because, quite frankly, I am afraid the same thing will happen again. Just make sure you have your 10.3 discs on hand before you install.

    Anyone else have this problem?
