Downloadable Origami Motorcycles

gse writes "This is too cool. Yamaha has a series of very realistic origami motorcycles, freely downloadable from their website. There's also a cool little article on how the models are made. I knew the office dyesub would come in handy someday!"

    "origami" means something like "folded paper". The Yamaha models are made by cutting and pasting paper, not folding. So they're not origami.

    They're cool nonetheless...

      Hara Kiri is just the "vulgar" term for Seppuku. Literally translated, hara belly + kiri cutting. Here's a howto guide on how to commit seppuku with a frisbee.

      Seppuku means the same thing, but with Chinese morphemes (but not necessarily from China). setsu = belly, fuku = stomach. They're synonyms. I can't think of a seppuku/harakiri in history that wasn't done by a direct or indirect order. For example, during the battle of Okinawa, many civilians committed suicide when the allied forces were invading because their education told them that death was preferable over becoming a POW.

      Oh, on the contrary. The bikes themselves are perfectly safe.

      It's the sudden and abrasive stop that you come to when performing an "emergency exit" that's the dangerous part. ;)

      This kind of paper artwork is somewhat popular in Japan.
      Basically, if you can make or get a 3d model of something, assembling a paper model if it isn't that hard to do. There's even software for this.

      Check out their gallery for more examples.

      There are also models of starships from Homeworld, Babylon 5, Star Wars and Star Trek here.

      Of course, paper models by no means are limited to static sculptures. My girlfriend got me one of these and it was remarkably simple to assemble, yet very impressive.
      Very neat stuff.

    Have a look at 'Paper Models International'. I've been buying models from them occasionally for over ten years, and they've got some amazing things in the catalog.

    Check out the JS Schrieber models of the Chartre Cathedral, and the first German locomotive, "Der Adler". The detail is fantastic.

    An uninformed reader will think it's weird that a computer peripheral (speaker) company also makes vehicles.

    More-informed slashdot readers will know better--they are still trying to get over that Hundai is allowed to make cars.

      The current Hyundai Coupe in GB is an *amazing* car. Goes like a b*stard, has a wonderful gear shift, and the air con rocks as well, although it does drink a lot juice, and trying to overtake with full air con blowing is quite interesting. They're damn expensive though....

    As far as I know these have been up for way more than just a year. They certainly did the rounds on a motorcycle mailing list I'm on a few years ago.

    At the time I remember quite a few list members downloaded and tried them but quite a few very shaky paper R1s went to the breakers because these kits are not paper modelling for the beginner or the faint hearted.

    Still, topmarks to Yamaha for doing such a cool thing!

    I've always been fascinated by origami and paper models. Perhaps that's because I am so very bad at both. Anyway, here's some more paper goodness.

    • Star Trek paper models. There's a fantastically detailed Enterprise 1701 (refit) there.
    • Origami and Math. My calculus teacher in high school had a whole array (pardon the pun) of paper polyhedra.
    • Origami dinosaurs. I love the paper Tyranosaurus. Now if I only had paper Marshall, Will and Holly's to go with these I could play Origami Land of the Lost!

    In origami you cannot use glue and scissors. If you are looking for origamis try Joseph Wu's Origami Page or Origami.com, in those sites you can have a peak in the wonderful world of folding. But those are really nice Paper Craft Models.

    The idea of paper/card models is not really that new. There is a great selection of card models available for purchase or download. The Yamaha models mentioned in this article are very simple compare to professionally designed and printed models. Virtually anything you ask for is out there. Poland is the leader in this hobby. To get an idea of what I'm talking about take a look at some of these links:

    Andrzej Halinski: leading publisher of card models
    Card model gallery
    High quality electronically published card models
    More sophisticated models have thousands of parts and are very realistic. A model of USS Saratoga from publisher Fly Model in scale 1:200 has over 3200 parts (that includes couple squadrones of airplanes). Card models are also mostly in large scales (1:33 airplanes, 1:25 vehicles and 1:200 ships) and a whole lot cheaper than plastic models.
