Penny Arcade Remixed By Japanese Students
Thanks to Yukihime.com for its feature showing cartoons from popular games-related webcomic Penny Arcade 'remixed' by Japanese high school students. The poster explains that he "...made a short class on American comics [in a Japanese school] with artwork and examples of popular comic books and comic strips. Then came the exciting part: making your own American-style comic!" Highlights from the 100 cartoons using Penny Arcade art with newly devised text include surreal heavenly messages, some crazed growth serum talk, and odd maternity-related humor.
You know if you had said "The Wang: mightier than the sword!" you might actualy have been ontopic.
I don't get it and I RTFA!
Maybe it's because I'm not that young anymore.

If the guys decide to do on a strip on this, I won't have to first read Tycho's news post for once! :P
"Each time you smile, it'll only last awhile. Life may be scary, but it's only temporary."
What would we do without them, eh?
These are a great much funny than true Penny Arcade comics. Those are far too weak to be well on Earth.
Here's from an actual strip.
Gabe: This month is January. (Holding up calendar.)
Tycho: ?
Gabe: Let's go skiing.
Gabe (tearing at paper): My country does not have mountains.
Tycho: Oh, no.
those are pretty funny, what a way to learn english and comics!
too bad the resulting copyright violation lawsuit will cripple that poor japanese school. Ha ha just kidding, Gabe and Tycho would never do that kind of thing! They'll just make fun of them in the strip or something.
Slightly related to this idea of taking original content (say Penny Arcade) and remixing it (new dialogue), is the web-comic 8-Bit Theater.
The premise is a sorta-retelling of the original Final Fantasy's story using the sprites from that game.
Disclaimer: I am not affliated with 8-Bit Theater beyond being a loyal reader who has been entertained for over 400 strips.

I like this strip best. I would pay to see two Japanese people act it out.

The webpage mentions that he showed the class several examples of comics -- did he choose Pokey the Pengiun or something?

Why he didn't include the classic "The Bench" strip. Its designed for it -- no bubbles, just use lines like the good old days of PA.

And they're all 128KB, Now that's just asking for a slashdotting ;).
Pity they seem to have so much bandwidth...

I took it because I knew I'd just be bored to sleep if not tears in spanish.
But me and Mike Tran (it was the closest thing he could get to Vietnamese?) would always go off with our speeches. Other people would be looking for Gubo, or Palanka and a bathroom. Me an Mike would always be trying to find our dear comrad, the military attache, while we drank mai tais at the women's volleyball match. Discussion of body parts was sometimes involved.
I find it ironic that the "odd maternity theme" comic was originally about eating too much Japanese candy. Add in the fact that the remake has a decidedly Jerry Springer feel to it, and you've got some funky coincidences riding around out there in the ether.

I went to a Japanese high school, and believe me, I got to see it acted out every day.
If those kids learn english the way most english speakers learn foreign languages, those are probably the only words that kid knew!
This sound like the Most Extreme Elimination Challenge, only in reverse and not funny. and no crazy people falling into puddles of fluid. and of course, no Vic Romano and Kenny Blankenship.
Every so often, one will hear the phrase "I am a pen." especially when dealing with younger Japanese. From what I understand, it's the first thing the English teachers teach the students. Even though the sentence itself is nonsencial and silly, it has a very clear structure and helps students to understand the very basic grammar.
:P
I hope this explains the obscure joke in the heaven strip.

LOL, the last strip linked in the post was hilarious (though the hints of MPreg were mildly disturbing). No offense to Gabe and Tycho, but I can see a very silly yaoi doujinshi made out of that and some of these others: youarenoisy.jpg, girlfriend.jpg, lovehotel.jpg, etc.
They rip off copyrighted material for their own profit. Most of them accept donations, and a lot of them also sell merchandise! If that's not illegal then I don't know what is. I'll also start selling merchandise from all kinds of sources that aren't mine! cha-ching!
The sad part is that if the art was manga-style and these were posted as part of webcomic, it would be considered hilarious. Don't get me wrong, some were funny, but sometimes art dictates the humor for the opposite culture.
I dont understand these strips.. maybe its funny in his neck of the world.. but I can't find any of this funny.. At all.. is that the point?
Just me
I've seen that magical phrase in video games for years, and now in this strip. Any Japanese experts out there want to take a stab at pronouncing and/or translating "..."?
The above post is correct, the "comic" is unfunny, and is quite gay. Why do you think the "comic" is filled with references to on characters penis?
Uh, I mean /.'d
it's been farked, slashdotted, AND penny-arcaded! anyone got a mirror?

It's ironic that the very same people that go nuts on every miniscule changes to a Japanese cartoon will actually approve Japanese people censoring American 'toons.
