Penny Arcade Remixed By Japanese Students

Thanks to Yukihime.com for its feature showing cartoons from popular games-related webcomic Penny Arcade 'remixed' by Japanese high school students. The poster explains that he "...made a short class on American comics [in a Japanese school] with artwork and examples of popular comic books and comic strips. Then came the exciting part: making your own American-style comic!" Highlights from the 100 cartoons using Penny Arcade art with newly devised text include surreal heavenly messages, some crazed growth serum talk, and odd maternity-related humor.

      Then again, if I tried my hand at filling in speech bubbles for manga, I don't think I'd be very funny either.

    too bad the resulting copyright violation lawsuit will cripple that poor japanese school. Ha ha just kidding, Gabe and Tycho would never do that kind of thing! They'll just make fun of them in the strip or something.

    Slightly related to this idea of taking original content (say Penny Arcade) and remixing it (new dialogue), is the web-comic 8-Bit Theater.

    The premise is a sorta-retelling of the original Final Fantasy's story using the sprites from that game.

    Disclaimer: I am not affliated with 8-Bit Theater beyond being a loyal reader who has been entertained for over 400 strips.

      Yes, and the same thing is sorta being done with Mega Man with bob and george (with a great deal of odd/unusual interludes between the events in games)

      Not exacly. There's a number of sprite comics that don't just rehash the storylines of things. Few and far between, but they exist.

      The same has also been done for Super Mario Bros... sort of. Meet Super Luigi World. It's all about Luigi and what he does when Mario is saving the world. A quite good comic if I do say so myself.

      Disclaimer: I am not affiliated with Super Luigi World, except that I know the guy who makes it and I want to kill his bandwidth.

    I find it ironic that the "odd maternity theme" comic was originally about eating too much Japanese candy. Add in the fact that the remake has a decidedly Jerry Springer feel to it, and you've got some funky coincidences riding around out there in the ether.

      By the way, Vic Romano is actually internationally acclaimed actor/director Takeshi Kitano (Fireworks, Battle Royale, Johnny Mneumonic, Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence and lots of others.)

    Every so often, one will hear the phrase "I am a pen." especially when dealing with younger Japanese. From what I understand, it's the first thing the English teachers teach the students. Even though the sentence itself is nonsencial and silly, it has a very clear structure and helps students to understand the very basic grammar.

    I hope this explains the obscure joke in the heaven strip. :P

      Combination of my fragmented Spanish and Babelfish.
      Living less than 2 hours from Mexico has taught me the value of this phrase:
      "Donde esta el (cuarto de) bano?"

      That and being able to pronounce everything on a menu...

      It's odd...this stuff shows up in Chinese, too. The movie "Future Cops" (comedy in the Street Fighter universe, only, it's not "technically" SF.) has the protagonist's mom "falling" for some guy becuase he can speak English.

      One of the lines he says is, "I am a man, a man and many pens!"

      Well no, because that sentence would actually be "this is a pen", not "I am a pen". The Japanese may be silly in many ways, but they're not complete idiots. Apparently this sentence is silly enough that it's still made fun of by students there (I'd bet the comic strip is an intentional stab at humor, not a mistake... though obviously Japanese humor doesn't translate directly to English).

      The first thing I learned in Japanese was "this is a book" (kore wa hon desu) and for a long time I'd just walk around saying that for no reason, like kids do. At some point I'm sure I said "I am a book" (watashi wa hon desu) just as a joke, knowing what it meant and just thinking it sounded funny - I think this is the same sort of thing.

      Actually they said that the storyboard for the last part of the show got lost and so the Korean animators came up with an ending on there own. The majority of animation on American TV is done in Korea.

    LOL, the last strip linked in the post was hilarious (though the hints of MPreg were mildly disturbing). No offense to Gabe and Tycho, but I can see a very silly yaoi doujinshi made out of that and some of these others: youarenoisy.jpg, girlfriend.jpg, lovehotel.jpg, etc.

    The sad part is that if the art was manga-style and these were posted as part of webcomic, it would be considered hilarious. Don't get me wrong, some were funny, but sometimes art dictates the humor for the opposite culture.

    I've seen that magical phrase in video games for years, and now in this strip. Any Japanese experts out there want to take a stab at pronouncing and/or translating "..."?

      It always seemed rather obvious to me. It's silence. Like if you say something stupid and someone just glares at you, they'd have a "..." bubble over their head. In comics it's hard to show "silence" without wasting a whole box just to be empty. If you use a bubble with "..." you don't have to waste that box. I determined this through context and logic. Not through some mysterious knowledge of Japanese culture. It always seemed obvious to me.

      The "..." signifies awkward silence. That should have been pretty obvious. You don't pronounce anything. If you wanted to act like you were in an anime, you could just yell out, "dot dot dot". But then you would be lame, and everyone else would just give you the "..." blank stare.

    Offtopic I know, but funny nonetheless. While reading Wang and Sword together it reminded me of when my friends gathered to watch Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. Only whenever we read the word "sword" we replaced it with the word "cock". Childish I know, but try it and prepare to piss yourself. Seriously........especially the scene where they go into great detail about the sword, and its dimensions, and how beautiful it is.....o god the humor.
