Capcom's Clover - Viewtiful Conversion, Sequel, Ookami

CuBeFReNZy writes "Game-Science has an article mentioning: 'Capcom held a meeting today to show off their newly formed development team, Clover Studio.' The team showcased their first titles: a Viewtiful Joe conversion ('will include Dante, from Capcom's Devil May Cry series, as a playable character') to the PS2, Viewtiful Joe 2 ('new co-op gameplay') for PS2 and Gamecube, and Ookami ('toon-shading engine... nature adventure') for the PS2."

I'm a diehard Nintendo fan, and want them to do well. I don't own a PS1 or a PS2, though that's as much a result of a thin wallet than of my ridiculous loyalty. But there's something about Viewtiful that makes me just wish everybody could play it.

And I can't be unhappy when they mention a sequel!

It was never an exclusive, Capcom just thought the game would appeal more to GameCube owners(it's a difficult oldschool style sidescrolling 2D platformer after all) than to anyone else, so they didn't release it for other platforms.

If you don't already own it and a Cube you probably aren't into that style of game anyway(it's a cartoon! Kiddy!).

It evidentally did well enough that they're porting it to PS2. I get the feeling it won't look as good as it did on the Cube(since the cube is really, really good at that style of game), but hey, at least the normal people will be able to enjoy it.

I just hope they don't tone down the difficulty to make it more accessable or compromise/tone-down the style to get it onto the technically inferior PS2, as that would pretty much ruin the game.

I believe the original Cube version was re-released in Japan with easier difficulty settings added, while not changing the original 2.

If true, it's possible to work around. It's been done; there are a handful of cel-shaded PS2 games. Auto Modellista, for example, while featuring visuals much worse than the GameCube version, is available on the PS2.

Anyway, honestly, while I'm a little annoyed the game isn't GC exclusive anymore, it *is* a seriously great game. I'm just happy to see the sequel will get a GC release.

Something I haven't seen many people remark upon is how hip the first game's story is. It's silly, corny in a winking fashion, has actually good voice acting ("Hulk DAAAAAVIDSON's in the house!"), and bona-fide laugh-out-loud moments. "Duh! There has to be a plot twist! That's where everything goes wrong *once* before the happy ending?"

As for Dante being playable... how close was Alastor, a boss and hard-to-unlock character (though not as hard as Captain Blue) in the GC version, to Dante? He already has a number of Devil May Cry references, or so I hear.

I saw Devil May Cry once... couldn't get into it. What I saw struck me as incredibly self-absorbed. I mean, how many times can the game say or print the words "Devil May Cry" in the first minute after turning the system on? I counted five -- and who in their right mind names their business that?

Anyway, I'm ranting. New VJ character, cool.

This is ridiculous. I'm not fond of the Playstation's inferiorities as much as the next person (Dreamcast forever!), but there is NO SUCH THING as "hardware cell shading". The "cell shading" is just applying colors to a 3D object, in a manner that makes it look like it is a cartoon instead of a "realistic" object. It's nothing new, and is certainly something that the PS2 can handle just fine. In fact, it highlights the PS2's abilities to produce high-quality 3D graphics without applying as many textures to the objects. PS2 lacks sophisticated texture compression features that the Gamecube and XBox shine at. Vietiful Joe doesn't use as many prefabricated textures for the characters. Those are instead used more often on the flat (but 3D) backgrounds in this game.

Anyways, back on topic. I love the general consensus with exclusive 3rd party games.

Game sells badly: "...Ok.... Cube owners aren't buying this. Let's ditch this system! After all, it's the fans fault for not buying the game, not ours!"

Game is a hit: "Nice. It sold well on GC. Let's port it to the Ps2 and/or X-box!" (See: GOD:DAMM, which sold about 400,000 copies on the GC, and the X-box version sold less than 60,000. Yet, Atari is developing the sequel only for the X-box. Go figure. Two other examples: Tales of Symphonia, and Viewtiful Joe)

Cel shading can be achieved by rendering a wireframe version of a polygon using thick lines, then rendering the textured/shaded polygon on top giving a nice outline around the final object.
