When you get into a fight, you chose an attack of some sort, and an icon for that attack goes to the top of the screen. Your opponent then choses an attack, and it goes to the top of the screen, next to your attack. Those 2 attacks are then compared, and a final result is displayed, and dmg is done to whoever won the "Rock, Paper, Scissors" deal at the top of the screen. It very much depends on how well the developers do in getting it right. Just because the Matrix universe opens itself to possibilities, it doesn't mean that those possibilities will be realised in this game. Personally, I really hope they get it right.

To answer the parent, there are 3 factions in the game. Machines, Zionites and Exile Programs, each trying to gain control over the Matrix. Plus there is a lot of flexibility in terms of customizing the skills of your character. You could "load up" skills before starting a session and trade them with other users, just like memory disks. The more you level up, the more memory units you have, the more skills you can use. Yes, it could be boring but it could also kick serious ass.
