Longhorn's Offical Name is Windows Vista
UnkleAsdf writes "The folks at Redmond have long pointed to the user interface of the next generation Windows release as one of its major selling points. Now, it appears Microsoft has chosen an official name for Longhorn with just that in mind. Enter: Windows Vista. Microsoft is expected to make an official announcement early Friday morning." From the article: "Microsoft has also registered domains to go along with the newly christened Windows, including windowsvista.com. The domains were registered in late March, indicating the company made the decision even before WinHEC gave developers their first taste of Longhorn in over a year."
Asta lavista, Alta Vista. You have fewer lawyers.
The domains were registered in late March, indicating the company made the decision even before WinHEC gave developers their first taste of Longhorn in over a year.
And why is that, exactly? Couldn't it be that they made up many names, selected, say, 10, and registered the domain names to prevent leaking of the name and it being registered by someone else ?
Sounds like a very small price for such a big risk, so I don't see any reason why registration in March should indicate that they actually decided to go with that name at that date...

It seems odd that Microsoft are sticking to their decision to abandon year references in their product names (well, excluding the miserable sales-pitch that was Windows 2003). I think they'll lose upgrades over this--not everyone knows that Windows Vista is better than XP (Vista implies a hands-off approach, XP implies that you're part of an experience), but everyone knows that Windows 98 is better than 95, simply because of mandatory obsolescence enforced by the naming scheme.
Yeah. Why not just call it Windows Eyecandy and have done with it?
Everything in moderation, including moderation itself
"Windows Eyecandy and DRM", more like - that appears to be the only thing it offers over XP.
I dunno, it seems that they are still going to be running an NTFS based OS, making it more like a patched-up XP instead of a completely new OS (kind of like the upgrade from Windows 95 to 98 are loosely comparable in differences in the upgrade from 2000 to XP). This leads me to believe that instead of being a completely new OS we are going to see a useless ME-style upgrade to tide us over before they finish a WinFS system. So with that mentality I would think they would label it as version 5.3.
Sound waves should be free!
Hasta la Vista, Windows!
I think MacOS X will prove to be twice better than Windows V.

*sigh* If you were looking around for a dining room suite, would you refuse to buy one that was called "Notable" because, if you added a space, it would say "No table"?

I steadfastly REFUSE to call it vista
Why? Sure, it's not the world's greatest name, but it's no worse (to me) than say Mandriva (why, Mandrake, why?)
if I'm going to pay $30 for a digital movie, I would much rather have it on a DVD where I can play it wherever I want than a digital media file with so much DRM that I have to give my first born to get it to play on ONE computer, much less my 4 computers
I adore the irony of a person decrying an OS for supposed integration of DRM favouring DVDs with their CSS encryption, region-locking and associated law suits...
And I can just forget linux, because obviously those FSF people are too inconsiderate to give us "features" like trusted computing.
Maybe the FSF won't, but IBM are working on it.
Hey, here's an idea - how about you wait until the OS has been released and reviewed (or at least previewed from a release candidate build) before ripping it to shreds for imagined undesirable features?
It's official. Most of you are morons.
Is it me or is someone merely cutting and pasting all the marketing hype from every other version of Windows, rearranging the words, and putting them in each PR campaign?
"It seamlessly connects you to information, people, and devices that help you get the most out of life."
Yeah, my dreams are all going to come true! I tell ya, marketing reps...they need to die!
Hey, I don't know what everyone's aversions to station wagons are, but the Olds is a car I wouldn't mind owning... it had a great sunroof for the kids in the back, big V8 and plenty of interior space.
