FreeBSD Ported to XBox

NetFiber writes "FreeBSD has been ported to the XBox. "Over the last 2 weeks, I have been working on a port of FreeBSD for the XBox. The port is fully functional. The framebuffer is fully supported, same goes for sound and USB devices (such as an USB keyboard). Only ethernet is missing, currently." The FreeBSD on XBox website is here, downloads included." Update: 07/27 14:50 GMT by T : Rink Springer writes with a request that you use the primary mirror instead.

      Actually, you can run Linux binaries with the Linux binary compatibility module.

      Have you taken a look at the updated PPC Project Page? It has came a long way from where it was even 6 months ago. Give it a couple more months I would say and it'll be a first class port...

      I just wish it supported 7300 series machines and not just New World stuff...:(

      This is what people do in their free time...it's a hobby. People do hobbies for enjoyment. Why do some people feel that OSS needs to have a real use?

      My xbox stopped gathering dust the day I got xbmc installed on it.

      Now it's on almost every evening playing my favorite DIVX movies (or xvid, ogm, etc... plays everything and anything), and almost every day playing relaxing music for my baby girl.

      now if only it could also do time shifting with an external TV receiver...

      Why do people bother porting this stuff to oddball platforms anyway. Talent like this could be used elsewhere in the OSS community instead of wasting time porting stuff to platforms like Nitendo DS.

      This is why the OSS movement is crap. It's all about free software. Using the term OSS makes you forget that this is all about increasing freedom in the first place, not about increasing some arbitrary standard such as the "userbase of the community", especially when said community is ill-defined. Yes the talent of these developers could be used to do more "productive" things, but it's their time to waste, and if they were coerced into doing that then it wouldn't be a very nice community to be a part of, now would it? And remember if you want free software improved in certain ways, you're always free to pay someone to do it.

      "I know people like to make 'media centers' and other stuff..." Well, sounds like you answered your own question. I've got an Xbox, and have yet to play games on it. I got it because the platform was a nice, cheap option for a MythTV frontend.

      The x-box is a thriving hobbyist platform with a ton of apps(some even being legal to distribute thanks to OpenXDK) and tons of users, some of whom hardly ever use their x-box for commercial games(pirated or otherwise). Don't assume that just because you don't do anything on it nobody does.

      For the same reason why people don't see why you'd want to fly model airplanes or race cars or ride motorbikes or drink fine wine/beer: some people just aren't that swift.

      I ported FreeBASIC to x-box. The port is broken at the moment because of some internal changes, but not before I managed to get a groovy screenshot of Star Phalanx running on the x-box.

      I'm working with the core devs on getting it working again. :)

      Maybe you should volunteer to write some documentation for the OSS community, instead of wasting it whining on a forum where nobody cares about your opinion.

      Well, you assume that the people who do this could be "reassigned" to other projects, which might not be true, since they are not getting paid for it. If the choice is between people porting oss to odd platforms or no code at all, I'd prefer the porting.

      Umm, that was my whole point. pcmanjon was criticizing people for not working towards his goals. I was pointing out an alternative set of goals. I'm not trying to stop people from working on the oss movement, I just think it's crap. He was telling people to stop working on what they want to work on.

    This is pretty cool, although from TFA: Only ethernet is missing, currently, as the binary only driver in /usr/ports/net/nvnet fails with an error 5, for some reason. Assistance there would be very welcome.

    I suspect this is a feature that would be fairly important to most users.

      If all you whiners cared to actually RTFA you would have spotted "A lot of USB ethernet controllers" listed under hardware support. These doesn't cost much these days, and *BSD supports most of them.

      I'm sure they'd all work great with the Xbox's USB ports. That is, after you get an adapter for the controller ports. But why spend money on getting USB to work just to have Ethernet over USB 1, when there's already a builtin 10/100 Ethernet port right on the back?

      Whilst Im sure you put in alot of effort and should be commended, claiming "fully functional" whilst admitting that something *isn't* functional seems like asking for trouble.

      "Almost fully functional" would have gotten you almost as much credit without the hastle.

      You can't just plug in "a lot of USB ethernet controllers" because the XBox controller ports, albiet USB, are not a USB connection. You need a converter, and THEN the controller. And when all is said and done, you'd left with a crappy 11Mbit of USB Ethernet speeds whereas the onboard controller (e100) is actually very good.

      I'm not whining - I really don't give a crap either way. But this isn't a solution by any means.

      No shit this driver fails, it is supposed to support NVidia nforce2 chipset with AMD processors. Not the (also nvidia) network chip in the xbox. The ethernet chip is probably quite similar to the nforce chip, but the rest of the hardware isn't ...

      The best bet might be to port the linux forcedeth drivers. They're the only OSS drivers for the chip.

      you can quickly and easily make a MS USB to normal USB adapter with a USB extension cord, a solder gun, solder, and an xbox breakwaway cable in about in 5 mins... Instructions are on the linux xbox website

      Well no shit. But it's a pain in the ass. I'm not sure why you're intent on defending this lack of ethernet support like this?

      I made my own USB - PS2 connector for the Xbox ports and that was enough for me. I don't need to spend more time on it then that. If BSD isn't going to run on the machine properly, it's not a big deal. I hardly run Linux on it anymore either (which, incidently, has always worked just fine with the network card.)

      You're probably going to want/need a usb adapter anyway if you're planning to use X-Box freeBSD or X-Box Linux. I mean, you want to be able to plug in a mouse or keyboard, right? Also, you practically require one to use either without being a chump and spending fifty bucks on a modchip(softmods are ambrosia. :) )

    It's simply amazing the amount of progress two dedicated youths can make in such a short time.

    One thing I used to have a lot of time to think about was how much time I was wasting, having forced myself into a very uncomfortable place. It's quite heartening to see these kids doing great work, even if it is just for themselves as a hobby (even moreso, in my opinion).

    I'm not sure that the thing is useful, but it's definitely a cool hack.

    Is anyone offering them a job yet?

      I can't wait to finish all my programming projects and port them from *BSD to Linux after their initial release. I've been on computers since I was the age of 2 starting with a C64, and I've learn much more than just computers. I've learned to deal with the likes of you and your other buddies who feel like you have to try dragging down people who are more fortunate and have accomplished much more than you. I'm only 20 and have my own company. I'm pulling in 10k a month by myself programming and consulting. Get a grip. I don't have a degree, and I program much better than most people out there. I think you need to understand you don't need a degree when you spend time reading books and studying hard in school. I'm the type of kid you probably picked on in primary and secondary school. My turn to be the boss. Even making me more happy is I'm going to go through college without any type of financial aid, and I'm doing it all by myself. You're just some looser kid who became an adult and try to knock people down while you go to your grave. Get a life, thanks. Now I'm off to go find some decent kids on IRC to hire out on some of my projects for Opensource. Maybe you'll hear about some works here and there in the future.

      My best wishes to the fellows who made the Xbox patchset for FreeBSD. I hope you prosper in life, you are the seeds of the future. Please continue with your development, as your efforts are appreciated. What most people don't realise is productivity is more worthwhile than arguing over which OS is better. Godspeed.

      I think you may have missed the point of the parent post, which I read as "the corporate world doesn't understand or appreciate the value of raw talent as demonstrated in this type of non-professional accomplishment." I think that's usually true, too. Most job postings I see these days are more interested in how many languages or architectures you know.

      Whatever the AC really meant, I think you'll enjoy life a lot more if you remove the large chip from your shoulder.

      The corporate world was ready for me. I've jobs in the past with a couple larger companies I felt really small while working. Not only do you need to know your knowledge, but you must be a polite show off during the interview, its the only way to get hired. They are looking someone who can do the job, and provide the best methods of making money to the company. If I ever hire somebody, it sure damn well won't by by degree or certification. One of the two companies I worked for a while said they don't hire people who are certified, and the other I quit because I moved. Its all in the talk. If you've agood sales pitch, then theres no doubt you'll get the job over some college kid with his degree. Large businesses are ready for even the people without degrees and generally I couldn't care what people think of me on how much I charge my customers. :D I love production!

      Cool, what's your companies URL? How did you build a business to become an incorporated company so fast? You must be up with the greatest businessmen/businesswomen of all time to do that.

      I'm also curious to know why if "you don't need a degree when you spend time reading books and studying hard in school", you still plan to go to college?

      It's also remarkable to know you could program when you were 2, since most of us can't even recognise patterns at that age. Did your parents make any specific institutions aware of such an amazing phenomonon?

      I don't expect the Xbox 360 will be as easy to hack as the Xbox. The Xbox was a bit of a rush-job (Microsoft were a latecomer to the party as it was) and it shows - unused buses still brought out to pads (probably for testing purposes), etc...

    Because things don't just fall together 100% working. It wouldn't make much sense to port the Ethernet driver before you got the basic functionality working, right?

    The Ethernet driver will come in time, I'm sure. If you're desperate, get some sort of USB solution until then - USB is reported to work just fine.

    In seriousness though, I applaud the effort. Maybe with this knowledge of what had to be changed and a quick port of Linux to the 360, maybe FreeBSD can be ported to the 360 with a much quicker turnaround.

      I doubt any leasons learned in porting either Linux or FreeBSD to the XBox will help with the XBox 360. The 360 has a significantly different architecture than the original.

    The Hardware on the Xbox is sold at a lost by Microsoft. (They make their profits off the games they sell.) Therefore, if you can mod an Xbox to be a regular computer, you can get better performance/$$ than you would otherwise be able to get.

    • Play any media the likes of mplayer can play
    • Act as a jukbox
    • Browse, email etc on the TV
    • A backup server for rsync
    • Other uses for other people


    Just because you can't cope with the thought others have imagination and enjoy these things, doesn't mean people should stop because of your opinion!

      This is FreeBSD. It's the second-least portable BSD (second only to DFly) and yet one of the most functional, depending on what you need. It was ahead of Linux with many features for a time and still has things it doesn't (e.g. clean tty snooping). You should try using systems before assuming they focus on the wrong things. Obscure hardware? FreeBSD has trouble running on some MAINSTREAM hardware, saying nothing of obscure.

    Thats why. Also, throw in a bigger hard drive and you have a great backup server or file server.

    Just don't try hosting any slashdot stories. Even a cluster of these things couldn't handle that.

    Of course this is news. Do you think you can just fire BSD into your xbox and everything will run fine and dandy?

    This, by the way, was a *contest* to get linux running on xbox, the prize for which was a total of $200K donated by Michael Robertson of Linspire fame.

    Strange that he should offer so much for running Linux on "what amounts to a hacked up x86 pc"...

    Give credit where credit's due, please. This is super work.

    I have happily been running web/mail server on my xbox for over a year: http://gentoox.shallax.com/ This guy is dedicated and has an interesting history with the 'offical' xbox project. This distro kicks ass.....oh and he's done all this whilst at uni and just got his results A1/A1/A1/A2 :)

      You can get info on emulators for the 2600 and about 30 other retro systems on the xbox here.

    The prizes are mostly to get things BOOTING once you get past that ... it's just another PC.

    I doubt these kids invented a new boot procedure. If anything they'll do what everyone else does and use a game exploit or a modchip.

    Of course when I was 16-17 I was writing 8051 software [this is ca. 1998] on a 80C32 eval board I borrowed from a friend. It had no OS, 8KB of ram and a 12Mhz processor. Nobody gave me a slashdotting for that ...

    The xbox has a 700Mhz processor, 64MiB of ram [which despite all other claims is a lot for just getting an OS to boot], two IDE channels, video, ethernet, etc...

    It's a PC.

    I've been booting Linux on my PC for several years now. Big deal.

    That was certainly true at the time of the Xbox launch. But it's been a while since. Prices on the cpu's hard drives, etc, etc, used in it have all dropped significantly since. I wonder how much of a loss the sale of a new one actually costs them these days.

    The price of the components has certainly come down, and if you open up a recent (version 1.6) xbox and compare it to an earlier version, you'll find that they have greatly streamlined the number of discreet components inside.

    However, the xbox originally sold for $399 and now retails for $150. Who knows if they're still loosing money on these, but I'd guess they still are subsidizing the software/online business by taking a loss on the hardware.

    You know what I did when I was 19? Started writing LibTomCrypt. Admitedly it sucked then but now it's a hell of a lot better and used throughout the industry. You can literally buy things in electronic stores that use my software.

    And I've never been paid a dime to distribute LibTomCrypt. Though I've gotten other things which is why I don't complain [e.g. free books, tshirts, occasional donation, stipend to conference, etc].

    Point is it's neat what they did, certainly more constructive then sitting around doing nothing. I'm glad they're doing it...

    I gave credit for writing device drivers for the framebuffers and whatnot, so don't act like I didn't give any credit. I simply said it wasn't newsworthy. Writing device drivers is far from easy, and well beyond my sphere of knowledge, but we don't post every time BSD supports a new motherboard, which is essentially what this is. These kids are to be congratulated for a superb job, no doubt, but that doesn't make it news.

    Hacking the xbox WAS news, the first time it was done. Now, it's old hat. It doesn't make the technical accomplishment any less, but it's still not news.

      I put this on my xbox one night when I was bored. It worked fine with a USB keyboard and mouse. XFCE4 worked fine. Internet worked out of the box and I was able to use firefox and gaim without any problems. What makes it slow and unusable as a desktop replacement is the limited 64 MB of RAM. There are ways to upgrade it to 128 MB, but that involves surface mount soldering something I'm not an expert on.

      Since I'm used to Gentoo, I decided to run an emerge sync and upgrade firefox. It took all night and into the morning which based on the lack of memory was expected.

      Other than proof of concept, I'm not sure most people will find a good use for these types of hacks. However, people gain intimate knowledge of the systems they are porting when they undertake these projects, and that is always valuable to the community. All large OS project started from "hello world" so the roots are always important.

      That is funny. You know in college they called Electrical Engineering students, "double e's". I made up my own for "C++" calling it "see double plus" just to mock it. Funny thing was that it caught on in our small group of friends.

      Actually, it is whether it's pronounced with a vowel or not.
      If it's pronounded oo-sub, then it's an USB keyboard.
      Pronounced Yoo-ess-bee, then it's a USB keyboard.

      For Nintendo fans, it gets confusing when someone talks about a NES, or an NES.

      There is some variation among dialects, e.g. between British and American usage. In Standard American English, the initial sound is what determines the usage of a/an, i.e. "an honorable profession" or "a USB controller" (assuming you pronounce it U-S-B). I've seen "an" occur more often in British usage, but I'm not sure exactly what their rules are.

      British English is vowel sound as well.

      Sometimes, when written, you will see an or a used in front of an abbreviation, where if the full words were used in place of the shortened letters the abbreviation would start with a vowel sound.

      e.g. A MSc - meaning A Master of Science.

      but that doesn't follow in this case as it's A Universal Serial Bus.

      I tend to do this as I abbreviate to save writing.

    CDs.

    Hence the changing over; and I still had trouble with some packages failing to install using dependencies for reasons that aren't entirely clear.

    I had Freesbie beforehand (live FreeBSD-based CD with option to install); that was easy to install, but it lacked some ports stuff I needed to get my printer working, yadda yadda. So I've literally just finished installing 'proper' FreeBSD. Can't say how well it's worked yet...
