Walk of Game Winners Announced

Via Joystiq, the news that the 2005 Inductees to the Walk of Game have been announced. From the post: "It came down to John Carmack against Will Wright and Sid Meier against Toru Iwatani in the creators category with Carmack and Meier winning out in the end. Also honored are Sony's own EverQuest, Final Fantasy, StarCraft, and Lara Croft herself. "

    Saw this on my trip to San Fran last summer. The food their is good. walk of game is pretty worthless though. oh well.

      Where exactly do you see the letter 'd' in the word congratulations? I used to think Slashdot might someday cater to the intellectual programmer. Sadly, I've realized that day will never come. Only morons like yourself dwell here. I am officially done with Slashdot.

    this is the *2006* awards.. eq's been out since 1999, wtf?

    the two people who won are "lifetime awards" it says nothing about the game titles being "lifetime awards" as well.. shouldn't this year's awards be for, i dunno, NEW games?

    oh, wait... run by / sponsored by / enshrined at a division of sony.. that explains everhack's "win".

      If you know anything about Walk of Game you'll know that it's only in it's third year. Plenty of awards are already available for this year's games, Walk of Game celebrates games that have been special in some way, or series that have been very successful/influential. These might not always be brand new, but often they really shine years after release. For example, now that there are so many MMORPGs in the market we see that Everquest was important in being one of the first very addictive (to some people) and popular MMOGs. (UO didn't have the same appeal, sorry to burst anyone's bubble) I should point out that I personally think the thing is rubbish - Halo won an award last year (2 years ago?) just so that all the major consoles were represented and it was nice and fair. Master Chief beside SONIC and MARIO. Hahahahahaha. I don't mean this is as a troll, but Master Chief will have to prove his worth over a longer period of time than two games to show he's as deserving of an award as Sega and Nintendo's mascots.

      EQ had about 2x as many players, at once and total subscribed, as UO. That isnt really a massive increase, they are well within the same league (the 100k-500k league, give or take).

      And this only measures popularity. For games with individual shards/servers more players dont make the game any different. No matter how many players WoW or EQ gets there will still be 1000-3000 per server, which means the gameplay on any given server will still be the same (although this does not follow for shrinking games, as EQ is now combining servers on the down-slope of their growth curve).

      everhack... most hacked
      boob raider... most overrated

      both perhaps squeeeeking past valve for the wins (cs for most hacked, hl2 for most overrated. good yes, but still overrated).

      if will wright doesn't sweep next year (2 games/series: simcity and thesims, and a lifetime award), the whole thing's a sham. period.

      This isn't supposed to be about what was great this year. The 2006 inductees doesn't mean they were given a award for what they did in 2006, but is saying they were given the award in 2006 for what they did. This is supposed to be about what made an impact on the industry and you can't know if something is important to the industry as a whole when it was just released. You have to let people show how much they like it, watch if other companies follow their lead, and make sure it has a lasting appeal to know it is really important or not.

        If you want a "what was great this year" look up one of the yearly award lists put up by just about every game webpage, or if you like to base purely on advertising popularity watch the spike awards.

      And honestly I think all of this year's inductees deserve a star. They all made definite lasting impacts on the industry as a whole.

      Honestly the only inductee that has been given a star that I contest is halo. You should have to prove you have lasting power before being put on a star. I don't think anyone will care that halo existed in 5 years. I don't really think that it influenced the industry all that much either. It was just another shooter that got a big push. If it wasn't made, there would have been another shooter taking the same glory, there wasn't really anything uniquely special about it.

      Well, that explains final fantasy. (though the recent iterations have taken a turn at being a complete opposite of what they describe the series as)

      Doesn't explain evershit, though. It's mildly successful for an MMO, but that doesn't mean it's a top seller in terms of games overall. In fact, it's not even that influential - if you want the influential in this gamespace, look at DikuMUD. Every MMO out there is a 3D clone of it, except maybe UO and a handful of other smaller MMOs.

      If any game had won for 'most influential mmo,' it should have been dikumud. because everquest was only a skin for it.

    I'd like to take a second to extend my sincerest congratulations to John Carmack - If it weren't for him then I honestly wouldn't be sitting here still at work right now (FAR after working 8 hours today) trying to get the first person shooter I'm working on to look as cool as the last one he worked on.

    In all seriousness, John was a gigantic inspiration to me as I was growing up and as I set my sights on getting into the gaming industry. I know he's not into awards and stuff, but he deserves this more than anybody. Thanks again John!

    ...that they inducted two opposites? Meier, whose emphasis is on gameplay, and Carmack, whose emphasis is on pushing the limits of hardware?

    Variety is the spice of life. Even if my computer won't run any code Carmack's published in the past five years.

      Surely you MUST mean Metal and Energy. Just have your commander, or a construction K-Bot reclaim the thing if you want the metal. However, I don't think it is on a metal deposit.

    I would have put Suda 51 in the top 3. Killer 7 was not a great 'game', but a great experience. For all 8 people who played it on the GC, it was the best story driven title I've seen since Zelda, etc.

    I enjoy the mentioned people's titles, but I'm far more looking forward to a new S51 game than theirs.

    I saw an ad on Battle.net for people to vote for StarCraft as one of the inductees. I can't help but think that the voting was lop sided to blizzards fans. With that said, I really do think that StarCraft is one of the best games of all times. I play Command and Conquer and a couple of other RTS games before but never really got into the genre. StarCraft changed all that with graphics, gameplay, and one hell of a story line. I can't think of a single game that I've played more than StarCraft. Kudos to Blizzard. Those guys are insane when it comes to developing RTS games.

      Yeah, I think StarCraft is actually one game from the late 90's that could arguably be in there. Everquest is debatable. As one post above said, it did launch the MMO as we know it, addiction and all. On the other hand, I think there were other games that possibly could have been inducted before it. However, the same could be said for StarCraft, which didn't define a genre but definitely re-defined it. The fact that the game is still so huge in its original form 8 years after it's release (1997?) says a lot. Even Half-Life, released in 1996(?), never had as big a following. Sure, the mods like TFC, CS, and DoD had a huge following, but HL MP itself wasn't that big, IMO. The singleplayer game is what defined the HL experience.

    Induction of Lara Croft before Samus Aran just proves how much farther the industry has to go on getting bettter female characters into their games.

    Cool that Carmack and Meier got in, all 4 nominees have outstanding credentials. Hopefully Wright will make it in next year (especially with his next big title to launch next year as well).

    I think it'd be vitally important for the Walk of Game people to put the early pioneers of the industry down lest the current generation of people voting on who goes down forget about them.

    How about let's see some Pac Man and PONG and Eugene Jarvis on the voting list next time, huh?
