PS3 Industry Leader In 2007?

1up has a piece on a report indicating that the PS3 will likely be dominant in the industry by the holiday season of 2007. From the article: "Research and Markets also foresees online gaming becoming an increasingly important part of the gaming experience, with Microsoft's Xbox Live service leading the charge. The research overview provides no speculative details on whether Sony or Nintendo's services will be comparative. The next-generation console market as a whole will actually peak in 2008 according to the report, eventually generating $21.9 billion, whereas software sales will rise through 2010 at $16.8 billion. Gamespot has a good summary of the PS3 SDK. A choice quote:

Sony chief technical officer Masami Chatani was also present at the PlayStation meeting. He disclosed that Nvidia, maker of the PS3's RSX graphics processor, is currently working on a lineup of programmable shader tools for the console. These include a CG compiler, which is a standard for PC graphics that's oriented toward C language; an FX composer, which is a program for creating shaders of various textures, such as skin and hair; PerfHUD and ShaderPerf, which are evaluation tools to optimize the quality of the shaders; and Melody, which lets normal maps be used to drop polygon volumes without lowering graphics quality.

Chatani reconfirmed that the PS3 will support Open GL/ES as its standard API, and he also revealed support for Collada, an open-interchange file format for the interactive 3D industry.

In terms of supporting developers in their use of the Cell processor, Sony is forming an alliance with chipmaker Transmeta Corporation, a company renowned for its software emulation technology and its x86-compatible, software-based microprocessors. Transmeta will be offering an SPE optimizer and software that will let developers effectively program for the Cell processor and its seven SPEs. The tools will allow statistical process control (SPC) simulation on PCs and will also let programmers debug and tune their programs with runtime info. Transmeta's tools will be shipped to developers in Q4 2005.

No big deal you say? So what happens when you find a bug? You get to report it, and then Metroworks and Sony play the blame game for a while until somebody takes ownership of it and maybe eventually gives you a fix.... maybe not. And since the tool vendors (compilers, etc) are outside Sony, they don't get access either. End result --- things like our library's interrupt driven real-time profiler can't be run on the PSP. Just stupid stupid stupid.

I have to debug in Codewarrior all day and I would agree that it's causing some sort of damage to my brain. Try waiting for 5-10 seconds for it to step over a line of code in the debugger. Totally random. Yeah, it's been like this for years. Not to mention the continual crashes. Oh yeah, and the random crashes occasionally trash your compile state so you have to do a full rebuild (on my current game, that takes 25 minutes). CW *is* good for two things: 1) it's good for being able to find you the definition of something (define, class, method, macro, whatever. VS still has problems and sometimes can't tell you and you have to search for it yourself). 2) it enforces coffee/cigarette breaks because of it falling over and pooping it's pants regularly.

MSDEV just works and the debugger is probably the best out there (want to try to intelligently debug threads on the PS2? Oh sorry - YOU CAN'T). Hit a break point on your XBOX and want to see whats in the render target or how your texture stages are populated? Click click you can see it in the UI. You don't get this from MSFT. You report a bug. MSFT, XBOX and Visual Studio are the same entity. Problems get fixed. Or have those been swept down the memory hole by them now claiming to do the same thing with Cell? (how soon we forget). Getting Nvidia and other people to produce a bunch of separate tools doesn't give you an integrated solution. It only gives you even more nonsense you have to deal with when things don't work properly.

sometimes companies take out "defensive patents"; patents they dont intend to use, but to ensure that their competitors can't claim the technology and implement it into their industry. maybe they have other plans on how to use the technology described in the patent, [maybe cheap disposable one-time use movies] but the fact remains... its not intended for the ps3.

FUD #2 - sony has actually taken action to cease and to help remedy their whole rootkit deal. granted it doesnt instill alot of faith in me that their company would do something like that in the first place, the fact remains that they listened to the public outcries and fixed the problem. thats more than i can say for some companies. they have soundly learned their lesson.

Plus, if it does have a smaller fanbase, that means that those who do have a Revolution are more likely the kind of players I would prefer to associate with- those who want great gameplay mechanics with nice graphics, not extreme realism with bouncing breasts (it should be noted that these are not always mutually exclusive.)

depends. hardware is hardware, but most titles will look almost the same on all three consoles; limited by whichever system is the lowest common denominator. i predict it will be a repeat of this generation.

with the industry budgeoning us with sequels, i can see most users going with the system or systems that will allow them to continue to follow the franchises that they have come to enjoy. bill likes final fantasy, so chances are that he will continue following the series on playstation hardware. john likes halo so he will probably continue to follow the xbox hardware. tim likes zelda and mario so hes going to follow the nintendo hardware.

where ground will be gained is from those that switch consoles. most FPS fans, and graphics whores flocked towards the xbox, if the ps3 or revolution can grab their attention, thats where they will gain sales from. the ps2 had the highest quantity of different successful franchises in many different genres, but if the revolution and x360 can come up with more novel genres and franchises, they might steal some of that thunder from sony. so far the x360 launch and announced games are 70% sequels of non-unique franchises.

due to the lack of options for early 360 buyers, kameo and perfect dark zero will probably be best sellers. if they can keep those franchises going, who knows? for every ps2 franchise that seems to have lost its luster due to overexposure [jak and dexter, ratchet and clank... etc] they are being replaced at a good clip by new franchises [ico, god of war... etc]. the revolution [read: mario, zelda, metroid games] arent going anywhere. the ps2 has enough franchises that they can afford to drop a couple bad iterations of a series. the console thats still under the gun is the x360. one mistake with say... halo3 and the ship is sunk.
