John Romero Developing a MMOG

bmarklein writes "According to computerandvideogames.com, John Romero is to developing an MMO. He doesn't divulge any details, but does say that it's 'the most money I've ever spent on a game' and that it's 'very different from any other MMO for some special reasons.' You, sir, are an idiot. The PS2 has USB ports, the Xbox has voicechat, and the 360 has both. USB keyboards have a single API, even at the hardware level, so nobody cares if you're using a different one. The reason we don't use them is that for almost any game, a controller with joysticks is much better than a keyboard/mouse. And voice chat on Xbox Live is good enough that I see no reason to restrict us to keyboards only in MMO's, unless you feel like switching genders.

And by the way, if you know anything about cross-platform development, you know it's almost no work for a single PC-based platform (say, Windows), and barely any more for true cross-platform development. Obviously, you're still developing in DOS.

Never done compatibility testing for a PC game, have you.

In a perfect world, the SDKs would be sufficient. Just like in a perfect world, web sites would all display properly using whichever browser you're using, because they're all using the same HTML standard.

Problem is that we're not in a perfect world. Graphics card company are inconsistent in how they implement various features. As a glarign example, pretty much every graphics chip not made by ATI, Nvidia, or Matrox (I believe the Parhelia has this support, but I'm not going to swear to it) does not support Hardware T&L. This includes recent arrivals like the Intel 915, released well after DX 9 came into existance.

This causes game developers to have to decide how to work around those problems - you can't just say "You've got an Intel chipset graphics card, so you're boned" And this implementation can then have a tangental effect on how the game performs on Nvidia and ATI chipsets

Now, I'm focusing on graphics cards, but the same problem can occur with sound cards, processors, motherboards...for example, the difference between a multi-threaded processor and one that's not can cause some problems. And we now have dual-core processors in the mix. Never mind the divide between Intel and AMD.

What I'm getting at is that there's a very high number of possible combinations, and while basic development testing on a vanilla OEM PC like a Dell with a mix of ATI and Nvidia cards will probably cover 80% of your user-base (warning - completely made-up number), the other 20% require some tender loving care to ensure they work.

That expense to make those folks work is eliminated when you develop for a console. At most, you need to worry about different firmware versions on the console you're testing against, or possibly different peripherals, and those two areas are rarely issues anyways.

Do I think PC gaming is useless. No. PCs are much more flexible, give the end user much more functionality, and generally have better control options. But consoles have some strong advantages going for them, which can't be discounted.

Doesn't explain the popularity of Madden, which is one of the longest running sequels in existance. If anything, the innovative games didn't do so hot. The last two games he claims credit on he is listed under "special thanks" and "additional design." In other words, he did very little or pissed off the wrong person.

So, given this track record I'd say that if he is working on an MMO as a programmer or level designer it's a good thing. He does good work. If he's in charge of design, I'd be worried because he tends to overreach the technology/time constraints.

I do admire his unwavering confidence (apparent, at least) and enthusiasm. If he had not tried to be a game design rock star he would be seen in a much different light. How much of that is his fault, though?
