Seems it only wirks for windows folks with the latest flash...
why would they do a site like this and leave most linux users out of it??

  I haven't investigated this comprehensively, but the clips do work with the linux Flash player on the second page of selections, so I guess someone's just goofed somewhere...
  In any case, once you've seen one, you've seen the lot. You get no idea of the what the underbelly of the distro looks like, you pretty much just get to see what colours they like to use for their default X themes.

  Just use the Ogg link. I'd assume those work in Windows as well provided you using a good media player like VLC.

There's probably tonnes of usability stuff to be learned from each of these videos. I noticed in the Vista one that IE7 has a nice feature where all of the tabs can be scaled down and shown at the same time, similar to the Mac/Compiz expose feature. Firefox developers should probably look into that.

  There are extensions that do this for Firefox. Which doesn't sound that stupid -- I can't imagine most people would be interested in a feature like that.

  Camtasia Studio.
  
  Originally, Buys says, the videos were encoded in QuickTime H.264, but "thanks to the feedback form [on the site] I quickly learned that this was far from optimal." Flash video seemed a good choice, except the software he was using to encode the video produced Flash that didn't work in Linux. "I received emails asking for Ogg-Theora videos, so I converted all the original QuickTime videos." Now, he installs the distribution of choice in Parallels Workstation on Windows and captures the virtual machine in proprietary Camtasia. "I've been looking for an open source replacement, but I have not found anything that provides the same level of functionality," Buys says. After the Camtasia capture, he exports the video first as Flash and then as a .mov file. "[I] convert the .mov to Ogg-Theora with ffmpeg2theora, then upload all the files to the server."

  What the hell is wrong with Istanbul Desktop Video Recorder? It's open source, it's in the repositories, and it records directly to ogg-video (with an option of recording raw if you have more free drivespace than CPU power).

  I have used Camtasia studio before and from what I have read from Istanbul it only does something like 1% of what Camtasia studio can do. Granted, the "basic" functionallity is still the same (capture in video a section of the screen), but then again Istanbul is far, far, FAAAAR away of being a replacement of camtasia.

  It's the usual UNIX philosophy; do one job and do it well.
  
  If you want to record desktop video, use istanbul. That's what it does and from what I can tell it does a fairly good job of it (my CPU is a little underpowered to run it properly)
  
  For editing and cropping the video, use a video editor.
  For streaming the resulting video, use a streaming tool.
  For recording presentations.. hell, why record them as bulky video clips when OpenOffice can save them directly to a flash file anyhow?!!

  Actually, I've seen Gentoo installs take as little as 20 minutes on some of my lab machines. Of course, it was a new AMD64 machine from Compaq with 2 gigs of ram, which kinda helped things along.
  
  The most time consuming part of doing a Gentoo install isn't the compile time, but the time spent waiting for the various packages and critical parts (Kernel) to download and unpack.

  And then how would Windows software function under it? "Binary compatibility" means you should be able to just install Windows software and drivers as if ReactOS was just another version of of Windows, without modifying the software.

  "just another version of windows" is right. Binary compatibility means it can run Win32 binaries. It doesnt mean all the drivers and APIs are available. There are many perfectly good Win32 applications written for Win9x that wont run on WinNT/2k/XP, despite having the same binary executable format. It is only going to get worse with Vista.
  
  Every new version of windows supports less old windows software. Every new version of cedega supports more old (and new) windows software. These trends will cross some day.

I can't tell you how many times I've had to pay for sites to watch sweet videos of Gentoo compiling software, or videos of a Red Hat desktop where someone hits the little hat and the menu pops up!! Once I found this sweet video of someone configuring their sendmail.cf. It was HOT.

Maybe if you're on dialup! Seriously, GCC, KDE, etc all take hours, even on a fast machine (X2 4400+ 2GB) it can take up an afternoon. Unless you're installing X-less, in which case you get to skip (most) of the heavy packages, it's gonna take some serious compile time.

  Well, I guess I was cheating a wee bit... We have 32 machines in our Linux lab at Loyola University Chicago, so after getting a few machines Gentoo-ized, we do distributed compiles.
  
  Also, we also image our machines using the tar command, so that also improves install time (30 - 40 minutes per machine).
  
  But even so, we were clocking roughly 40 minutes to create one machine via full stage 3 install.

A flash site to view linux distros in action that cannot be viewed from a linux distro. Quality that. And yes, I know that I can download the ogg theora equivalent and watch that, but I'm lazy, and have grown used to youtube like video on the internets.
When is hell is flash 8 going to be available for linux? Yoohoo, macromedia, anyone home?

  Flash 8 is never going to make it to Linux, Macromedia/Adobe have said they're working on Flash 9 for Linux and skipping the current version.
