FFXI Sequel In the Works?

With several expansions to the original game already released, and the title available on three platforms, Square/Enix is finally talking about a sequel to Final Fantasy XI. There are very few details available at the moment, other than to say it will be out on the 360, PS3, and Vista. From the Gamespot article: "Attempts to contact American Square Enix reps for clarification and confirmation had gone unanswered as of press time. However, as Windows Vista won't be available until 2007, the PC edition of the game would likely not launch until next year--at the earliest."

Though I do wonder if they'll port it to all the new platforms seeing as it's on PS2, 360, and the PC. Now that a Nintendo system will offer mass-storage (not too much, but enough for an expansion or two). It'd be pretty cool to see a true cross-platform FF game. It makes me genuinely wonder which version would sell more copies (PC, Wii, 360, PS3). I'm thinking PC becuase it's got the biggest userbase.

Also, I don't think the PC has the highest userbase. Well, technically if you compare it to the wii, ps3 and 360 right now it might have the most, but that's because two of those haven't been released yet. With World of Warcraft out and beating the pants off all the other MMORPGs, you'd think Square-Enix would have learned something about how to make an MMORPG that normal people can enjoy, but they haven't.

not crashing when opening another window:
alot of people complain about this. i don't really care. i only have my windows box for gaming and nothing else installed on it. as such no popups ever happen except "stickey keys" which i turned off after the first time i got dropped for Fullscreen lost. however no where on the box does it say that FFXI is a MS Windows application. there are stern requirements for that. look them up. it does say it requires MS Windows to run. the community however is large enough that someone wrote a wrapper to allow FFXI to be run in "windowed" mode so popups dont drop you from game.

textures that are higher res than PS2 allows:
it exists. in the FFXI config panel outside of game. requires a game restart. annoying place maybe but you can reset texture sizes there.

      monsters that look identical:
every Final Fantasy game has been like this from the start. why would FFXI-2 (if it did happen) be any different?

      same crappy game:
ive been playing for 3 years and still enough it. so "one man's trash is another man's treasure"

      WoW:
i am very surprised WoW is as big as it is. the constant server crashes, login "queues" etc to me do not a service make. still some people do like the log in for an hour and do a quick quest. to me WoW came off as a single player game with some multiple player content when you reached max level with an added chat room. FFXI on the otherhand came off to me as a multiple player game with extended chat abilities. pick your poison.

      top spot:
i dont think FFXI ever help "top spot" of course i dont follow population numbers like that mmogchart dude.

it is "Final Fantasy Online" i dont know why the XI is there. i believe you are waiting for Fantasy Earth which will hopefully be a combination of WoW and FFXI. maybe not. about a EQ clone though... i never played EQ so i will dodge this one.

there is one thing i think is always a lost statistic with FFXI. for the 3+ years it has been around it has had the lowest number of unscheduled maintences. i like that. i know that unless they announce something on the website that the game is going to be up. weather i want to play or not.

I can't stand them, and it doesn't try to cover it up at all to make it seem more interesting.. Instead, it just gradually got more and more boring, and more and more frustrating.

I spent three years on a single character and never finished the game story.. Some might think that's impressive and that the game is truly vast when I say this, but it couldn't be more than the opposite.. The world is tiny, very tiny, and the story is not very long at all.. So what took me so long? Simple, the grinding in-between the tiny five minute bits of cut scenes (seriously) goes on for hours and hours on end.. And you know what? People ALWAYS go to the same places to level, and even the same places to camp mobs. (Yes, camp.. exploring and killing at the same time is unheard of in this game and you get laughed at if you even suggest it.) Zilart expansion was already in the package when it hit with the US, so most of us never even noticed the changes it made.. Promathia was lame as hell, they placed ridiculous difficulty bounders up to keep people from progressing in the story at a reasonable rate and released the content for it very slowly.. (Yes that's right, you bought an expansion that had virtually no story content at its release and had to wait months for them to release the next "chapter.")

Their latest attempt came after I quit of course, but from all I have heard and seen.. it is no better off. In fact, it might be worse.

That's all just a tip of the iceberg to the games problems too. SE hasn't even TRIED to adjust any major player concerns that I've seen.. Everything is incredibly static in the world and pretty much everything implemented stays that way forever. (No matter how terrible the implementation.) I can honestly only think of a couple of things they changed that are worth noting.. (Slight decrease in the first Promathia mission difficulty for one.) But all and all, they just left things as is and ignored everyone's cries. What did get changed was pretty irrelevant.. Meh, the game left me bitter as hell.. I was miserable playing it for awhile, but stuck around for friends.. That was a stupid mistake on my part, but they've mostly all quit too by now. At any rate, everything from game consoles to phones to TVs to watches are no less than specialized computers these days. The word "computer" is just too redundant to use on every computer-based device anymore. Otherwise store shelves would be clogged with video game console computers, bread-toasting computers, car alarm keychain computers, coffee-making computers, marital aid computers, and so on.
