Downloadable Game News For All Three Consoles

With Microsoft's Xbox Live service more popular than ever and the other two next-gen consoles almost here, news about the companies' download services is plentiful. For Nintendo, there's word of more Virtual console titles slated for early next year. NES titles include Kid Icarus, Punch-Out, and Kirby's Adventure. Sony has announced that one login will work for every game on their online service, though what you'll find behind the login will differ with every title. Finally, Xbox Live will see even more classic games in the near future. Contra hit the service yesterday, with titles from Atari slated for later this year. A version of the player vs player combat game Worms is also planned for the service. Interesting times for all three online offerings.
Update: 11/09 19:20 GMT by Z : Errr ... you might want to stay away from Contra.

    Now I can only wonder if it will be the orginal "Mike Tyson's Punch-Out" or if it some how remade....

    I do like seeing classic games showing up as easily avaliable downloads via these services (both XBLA and the Wii's VC).

      Some time ago, Nintendo rereleased the game as "Punch Out!!", without the Mike Tyson endorsement. The only difference, aside from the name, was the replacement of Mike Tyson with a generic game character, who was basically the same boss but just with a different face and skin color.

      You can count on this Tyson-less version to be what we'll see on the Wii.

      It will more than likely be just "punch-out". Nintendo remade the title after it's contract with Tyson expired and replaced him in the game. That will be the version we'll see.

      From Wikipedia:
      In 1990, towards the end of the NES's run, the game was re-released as Punch-Out!!, with the Tyson character replaced by Mr. Dream. Mr. Dream fought in the same fashion as Tyson, but had cosmetic changes to his face and skin color. It is widely believed that Tyson was removed because of his troubles with the law; however, he was removed due to the fact that his contract with Nintendo had expired and was not renewed.

    Duck Hunt, Punch-Out (but will it have Mike Tyson?), PilotWings, Hogan's Alley, Kid Icarus, Kirby's Adventure, Pro Wrestling and Wild Gunman are all apparently slated for release, and an early 2007 appearance seems likely given what Nintendo's said about Virtual Console so far.

    Queue questions about a gun attachment for Duck Hunt. This is good news indeed, although Clay Shot was much harder (and thus, the place where I spent more time) than shooting ducks. Except for those brown ones. Stupid brown ducks.

      They showed a "light gun" shell for the Wiimote at E3 so it's a strong possiblity. Now if only you could shoot that stupid dog...

      You'll notice people have already linked to the light gun attachment for the Wiimote which will cover all the bases for the light gun. However, if you look at people playing Red Steel, you can see that the attachment is purely cosmetic and that you can use the Wiimote as it is. You don't really need the gun stock attachment to play.

      A control pad connected to the first socket can control the ducks. Little-known fact mentioned in the game's instruction manual.

    I actualy bothered to RTFA and found out that 1up is getting their "sources" by searching the ESRB website for new raitings (simply limit it to the Wii).

    Kinda interesting actualy....

    If they have the emulator working, wouldn't they be able just pull the backup archives (tapes) and just plug and play with little testing?

    I am guessing in term's of the Punch-Out (with or without Mike-Tyson) will be whatever was the last released title (in this case no Mike). This is interesting on several of the old NES ROMs I know there were multiple variations of the same game. One of which was the original Tecmo Bowl (my cousin and I had different rosters, Dickerson or Bently for the RB for the Colts). I know at different points having different emulators, I have seen both variations of the two afore mentioned games.

    Also, will multiplayer games be able to played on multiple Wii at the same time? (ie can I play my friend accross the country?)

    No Mike Tyson. Nintendo dropped him from the game when he was charged with rape. Other than the graphics, the game's the same, though.

    The light-gun appears to be a sleeve that docks into the back of the wiimote and turns it into a gunstock so that the tip of the remote becomes the barrel.

    I really hope they're going to release Lethal Enforcers for this!

    Ever since they started re-releasing SNES games on the GBA, the number one game I've wanted to get was Super Mario RPG. Many oldschoolers, myself included, will say that this is one of the greatest RPGs ever. It's basically a preview to what Kingdom Hearts is- the combination of two companies, one with the gameplay, the other with the characters. Square took the characters from the Mushroom Kingdom and put them into one awesome game.

    The fact that it's appearing on the Wii VC means that Squeenix isn't against the idea of supporting the Wii, at least in this limited way that gets mostly profit. With their lead, other companies will start to jump on board, and hopefully we'll have most, if not all, of the NES, SNES, and N64 library open for purchase and download.

    In the same vein, it's nice to see that these new lists aren't just re-re-re-releases. I've never played Super Metroid or Kirby's Super Star, but I will certainly pay to play them on the Wii.

    In short: Motherfuckin' Geno.

    There is a compilation for the PS2 coming out...I think it was this week - Sega Genesis Collection - anyway, it has about 20 games, including PS 3 & 4 for about $20!

    Clay Shot was easy. The ducks with their unpredictable flight pattern was tough.

    And I was extremely dissapointed when my score just wrapped around from 99900 to 0. I didn't even make the high score that time.
