The Nintendo DS Games Wishlist
The site Retrogaming with Racketboy has up a wishlist of sorts, calling out the classic titles begging to be released to the Nintendo DS. Along with the Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World cart that I've been wanting to see for a while now, Racketboy calls out Super Metroid, the Sega Genesis Collection, and the Namco Museum as great candidates for DS releases. He also asks for new titles, like a compilation of Wario titles and a NSMB-style remake of Super Mario Bros. 2. "MattG PressTheButtons also had a really great idea for an original DS game that would serve as a follow-up to the very popular New Super Mario Bros. But instead of continuing with the traditional Mario gameplay, Nintendo would go back to the Super Mario Bros 2. (Doki Doki Panic) action, complete with turnip-throwing goodness. Would it be quite as successful? Possibly not. But I think Nintendo is currently in the position to take some fun risks with some trademark franchises that could give the gaming community something new to talk about."
I've been begging for a solid RTS for my DS since they were launched (and don't want to deal with the headache of modding needed for Touch of War). StarCraft would be a good start.
Isn't Metroid: Zero Hour
already a port of Super Metroid for the Gameboy advance (and therefore DS)?
Test your net with Netalyzr
1) Starcraft port
2) Quake II or III port featuring online play
3) A new Donkey Kong Country a la NSMB
4) 2D NBSB style Metroid game (agree in that with the article)
5) Warcraft II or original Command and Conquer port
A decent Sudoku implementation,
A really good (dedicated) Chess game, with WiFi connectivity and ratings,
Civilization (again, WiFi connectivity would make this ROCK),
Syberia I and II,
Magic: the Gathering (yeah, yeah -- but it's good addictive fun sometimes),
The entire Ultima series,
The Frontier/Elite series (Frontier First Encounters, etc),
The Might and Magic series,
Starflight I and II,
Flight Simulator,
Zork etc (with graphical updates -- keypad for directions etc),
The DS is an interesting concept -- WiFi connectivity really adds another dimension to the genre. I still don't get why they added a microphone, though...

I will start frantically seeking out a wii once Rock N' Roll Racing is available. Otherwise, I will wait until it is in stock and it has taken a price hit.

With Final Fantasy 4 Advance-esque extra features
...what I want is an affordable DS cart loaded up with Firefox, a lightweight mail client (put the keyboard on the touchscreen), a lightweight AIM app, telnet/ssh, and maybe even an IRC client. Give me that, and I won't need an iPhone.

Civilisation Civilisation Civilisation! Why the fark has this not been done?
And of course Frontier. A well jigged one at that, after the performance of metroid prime I believe the graphics could look something like conflict freespace. And while I mention that game... that and maybe a scaled down version of starlancer as well.
Heck, just bring out the ENTIRE back catalogue from the amiga and a1200. It could do them all. Sensible Soccer! The Settlers! Think of the wi-fi possibilities!
And the #1 game I would murder several people for to appear on the DS:
UFO: Enemy unknown.
How about more of the weirder style games where you exert some type of physical control over characters, enemies and the environment itself, rather than focusing gameplay on controlling a single character directly? Sure, you got stuff like Super Monkey Ball and Rocket Slime out there already, but this is only scratching the surface of what the DS is capable of. For example, imagine some type of RTS game where the playfield has elasticity properties the player can alter during gameplay. certain areas could have sudden elevation changes, rippling effects, twisting, pinching or other oddities that could alter progress.
Or how about games that allow the user to create their own objects with adjustable properties, or construct an object from a large number of preset parts, similar to Mind Rover: The Europa Project.
The bottom line: we need more games that force you to think outside of the box, and not just for purposes of speed or button mashing. The DS has so much untapped potential, it's not even funny.

As much as I love the new Castlevania games on DS, I have been really hoping for a metroid game to come out in a similar style. I'm not a big fan of the Prime titles. I liked hunters alright, but come on, the DS is the perfect home for a next gen 2D metroid. A super metroid remake is welcome even if it's not Metroid V.
I don't have a list anymore since I bought Puzzle Quest.
Yes, it is addictive. Time to play again!.
What power has law where only money rules.
I like Metroid and Mario a lot, but please not yet another retro release, Nintendo already had way to much of that in the last years or did everybody forget the Mario Advance series, Mario64DS, etc.? I am kind of sick and tired of getting the same games from Nintendo year after year. How about some completly new stuff instead of just another franchise milking game (YI2,...)? Pikmin was the last truly new thing that Nintendo did (ignoring all that casual gamer stuff, Nintendogs, Brainage, etc.) and that already was way to long ago.
If there ever come more rereleases for the DS then please in the form of a flashcard and downloads over the VirtualConsole, but not as full price cartridges.
The system already has a built in microphone, and I'm sure that the touch screen would work wonderfully. Come on, Sega!

I spent many hours playing Sensible World of Soccer--I'd love to have a version for the DS!
I want to see an update to X-COM on my DS. To be more specific, after Rebelstar: Tactical Command, I'd like to see a new take on it where instead of defending Earth from Aliens, I lead a rebellion against Aliens already in control. Imagine this: You manage hidden bases just like before, only now you have to keep them self sufficient by growing food and generating power. You send out teams to raid for supplies, shoot down alien craft, and generally make a nuisance of yourself to the bad guys until you can start freeing the world from alien domination by destroying their bases on Earth and then the solar system. The black market gives you a way to buy and sell some items, and you research alien technology and learn to modify and duplicate it. I'd also like to see the ability to build facilities for soldiers to train in so that combat isn't the only way they can improve their accuracy and become useful.
Seriously, the DS needs such a game. I have to keep mine in another room when I sleep because it cries for this game all night long.
Earthbound + Mother 1 + Mother 3 = Drool
Come on Nintendo!

The FTL originals fit onto a single-sided floppy disk, so they'll fit onto a DS cart. Put the movement controls and inventory on the touch screen and let a whole new generation experience the only game that's ever caused me genuine fright (low health, dark room, concentrating on mapping and several Pain Rats sneaked up on me and just squeaked...) No automap - it would ruin some of the puzzles. Carrying around a pad of graph paper might be a bit awkward, but there should be room on the cart for you to draw your own maps on the touch screen and save them.
Metroid Prime Hunters showed the DS is fully capable of running FPSes with sufficient controls and technical prowess.
As much as the FPS scene is saturated in the PC world, I'm amazed (and frustrated) there's only MP:H.
Come on! In the game world, there's pretty much nothing more fun than shooting your friends in the face... MP:H gives us that, other devs can do it as well.
Other types that the DS lacks is good shmups. Nanostray under-delivered but Nanostray 2 looks very promising.
And what about some good fighting games? The Guilty Gear port was bleh... how about a real port now? And how about some SuperSmashBros?
^_^
I have to say, it rocked, and we and everyone in our class wants one. Unfortunately, voice recognition won't be to the point where this would be feasible for a few more years. I hope that someone does pick up on this type of use eventually though, because done right this would be the ultimate solution for people picking up a second language for travel. The DS provides the possibility of voice input, instant feedback, communication via wifi with native speakers, portability (though you need non-spoken activities for use on public transit), everything you could ask for in a language package in a video game wrapper that could be designed to be quite fun on its own merits.
Warning: Apple/Nintendo fangirl. Likes her electronics cute & cuddly. May be rabid.
Yes, there are similar games out there, but with some games you can accept no substitutes. 3/4 of Bejeweled's allure is the audio and visual experience.
If it ain't broke, it needs more features!
Why not just combine them and release:
Hammurabi ST: Enterprise Wumpus Hunt of the Mugwump Golfers?

Please, oh mighty Blizzard, hear my plea. Port Diablo, Diablo II, or best yet, a new Diablo III to the DS. The touch screen interface on the bottom for all the clicky-clicky. The inventory screen and map on the top screen. Yes, pure gaming bliss.
If you're going to do that, we might as well have BASIC DS. Hey! That's be pretty useful!

No, I prefer to program text-based games in FORTRAN for the DS.

I always loved the 2 player co-op in the Contra games, and with Nintendo Wifi, this could be such a killer feature. Plus, the DS has the required buttons for the Konami Code!
Also, a turn-based strategy game based on the pen & paper Battletech game would be freakin sweet! I spent countless hours playing this as a kid, building 3d maps out of model train materials... This style of gameplay would suit the DS and the Wifi connection perfectly. Building custom maps and mechs and duking it out online, hell yea!
I, for one, am looking forward to the inevitable
Monkey Island, Sam & Max, Grim Fandango! Point and click adventures, dammit. The best console out there right now for these types of games.

I wish that they'd bring Picross DS to America. I loved playing SNES Mario Picross in two-player mode with my friends. Sudoku somehow made it here, so why not Picross?

Like NDSMail ?
> a lightweight AIM app
Like Beup Live or DS AIM ?
> telnet/ssh
DSLinux has them.
> and maybe even an IRC client
DSOrganizer includes one. There is also SylphIRC.
> Tries to imagine Firefox running in 4mb of ram... pukes
There were web browsers for the Amiga, you know, running on massive 1MB of RAM.
As far as I remember, single-floppy distrubution of QNX also included web browser.
Nevermind, though. There is commercial web browser from Opera, which unfortunately requires inserting RAM extension in Slot-2, but looks and works fine. Too bad noone has cracked it yet to use flash card as memory extension.
Latest DSOrganize includes simple web browser. And there is also Okiwi web browser in the works.
> organizer
DSOrganize contains calendar, todo list, address book, even something for drawing. I bet you can write simple application to import/export its data from/to Outlook.
> Can we have winamp, too?
You can play MP3s in MoonShell, DSOrganize and iPod-emulator LMP-NG. You can also play streamed music with SylphAMP.
> Sounds like you'd be better off with a VNC client. Which has been done, IIRC.
Win2DS, PointyRemote, DS VNC. There are also remote controls (no feedback on DS) - DS2Key, DSPad.
And please, please stop recommending DSLinux. Its font are completely unusuble (so small). Can't they do subpixel rendering?
My favorite DS games were the ones that used the stylus really, really well. Kirby: Canvas Curse, Trauma Center, and Elite Beat Agents to name a few. Three years ago I would have laughed at the idea of drawing lines for Kirby to walk on, playing surgeon, or playing a rhythm game by tapping circles on the screen, but these WORK and they are incredibly fun.
So yeah, I want more games like that. More stylus only games that are innovative and fun, I know that's a lot to ask from some developers, but I will buy your game if it's good.
I'm not trying to demean non-stylus DS games or games where you don't use the stylus much, as there are plenty of great games like that too (Phoenix Wright and Castlevania to name a few), but stylus only games are what make the system unique and wonderful to play.
Reviewing just the first hour of video games.
Seriously does anyone have an original idea? I'd much rather my consoles and handhelds have 100 original games then 1000 ports or knock offs. Every time I hear someone bring up an idea like "it'd be just like metroid, only with." I get a little bile in the back of my throat from a mini-throw up.
If you want ports and poorly done games get the PSP there's tons there. The DS really has a semi solid line up of games, asking for a ton of ports just ruins systems, not making them better. If you want these games, ask for them on the VC, not the DS. Demand better games on the DS.
Oasis would be the perfect portable game. A bit like a Minesweeper meets Civilization, it uses the simple control system the DS stylus would provide, a complex strategy system, random levels so games are never the same twice, and rounds rarely last longer than 15-20 minutes. Add in a multiplayer mode, and this would be sweet!
