Sony Announces New Exclusive Rockstar Title
The official PlayStation blog has the word that Rockstar is gifting Sony with a brand-new franchise. Gift is probably the wrong word; I'm sure it cost a pretty penny to obtain those exclusivity rights. Just the same, as Gamespot notes, this is a good sign for a company that's lost a number of fish to Microsoft over the last year: "Recently, more and more titles which were previously thought to be exclusive to one console or another have been announced as multiplatform, including Assassin's Creed, Fatal Inertia, and Devil May Cry 4. Some media speculation stated that former Sony chief Ken Kutaragi's 'slowness' in tying up the red tape of the deals had led to Sony losing exclusives for the PS3." No word on what the game is, other than it is not L.A. Noire.
Anyone read into this that they haven't even really started the whole new franchise yet? WIll it still be relevant in a year? Or two?
If brevity is the soul of wit, then how does one explain Twitter?
And apparently it's provisionally called Jack Thompson's Baby Slicing, Dicing, Cooking, and Chomping Challenge.
Though they are concerned about the poor taste in basing the game on Jack Thompson, so some changes may be imminent.
You are not alone. This is not normal. None of this is normal.
Sony doesn't pay for exclusives.. or do they?
Sony Execs: "See - the PS3 does have exclusives! I mean, those Rockstar guys promised us a new game sometime in the future. We just don't know what it's called yet. Or what it's about. Or when it will be finished. But we'll be damned if it's not exclusive!"
... if this were a practical joke on Sony
This summer in cooperation with Sony entertainment, Rockstar Studios presents:
My Little Pony: Revenge
Be enthralled as your pony gains hair power to rip the sculls out of unsuspecting pedestrians
Be overwhelmed as your pony gains frolic points to unleash a deadly stream of missiles on all who stand in his way
Be ready for the coming of the cute little ponies who are going to Kick Your Ass!
Coming August 2014
Rated: WTF
Actually, now that I think about it, that sounds like a sweet-ass game, I can't wait till it comes out!
Well, back to rejecting software patent applications.
You play the head of the video game division of a large consumer electronics company. Your goal is to successfully market an overly expensive game console against tough competition. The North American title is unknown, but in Japan it will be called "Kobayashi Maru".
[Insert pithy quote here]
Comes down to this, Rockstar has been working with sony since the PS1, all the GTAs, the vast majority of their side projects are all on sony platforms. GTA4 however, Rockstar got it ready to soon, there simply isnt enough units on either platform to maintain the sales they want for it so its going multi-platform, something Rockstar had told sony. However, like many of the companies who've been working with Sony all this time, when it came time for a new project, they continued on with sony. The new game is supposed to be based around rockstar trying to make the ultimate game for PS3, using BD and Cell as best they can, so could be interesting. There is 3 more Sony press confs/events this year so we may hear more then, or it might be next year or the year after when someones ready to talk on it.

I know this is a joke aimed at the Rockstar franchises, but remember that the guys made a game about ping-pong and managed to actually make it very well.
This current generation is just awful. All the three big companies have been doing is either bragging about their exclusives or promising new and better features down the road.
I want to see the results of this. I'm tired of waiting for all these promises. I'm tired of being disappointed. I want it to be delivered not stated and put off till god knows when.
Sony stated it the best a while ago. Your investing in potential. As much as I hate them, they admitted to it. For the first time a console company in the industry admitted that your buying potential in a console.
All its been is this. Microsoft and Sony are bickering over who has more or better exclusive titles. And Nintendo keeps promising us online game play and their real flagship titles this fall.
I own a 360, I only play Guitar Hero 2, its the only game that screams "come back and play me". I also own a Wii, a complete disappointment, once I finished Zelda there was nothing left. Nintendo leaving out online multiplayer right off the back showed me that they are still behind. There was no excuse for that not to be there at launch. As for the PS3, I cant justify the steep price right now, blu-ray or not I want a gaming console not a blu-ray player.
I will say this though. For the first time in a while I was floored by a single game this generation. This has only happened a few times, Doom, Mario 64, Half-Life, Starcraft, and now Gears of War. As for Guitar Hero 2, the only game that has made me go back and play it again like this is Starcraft.
Oh, ok, Thanks!

Just remember, we don't know what this franchise is yet. Rockstar could deliver another smash hit like GTA...but there's also a chance we'll get another game that will sell like Manhunt or Table Tennis, both of which hit the clearance racks here.
Goo goo g'joob.
Ignoring the fact that you're completely wrong on the Xbox 360 specs (the Xbox 360 doesn't use BluRay), you forgot to mention that the Xbox 360 drive is a 12X drive and the PS3 drive is a 2X drive.
GP was wrong about the XBox drive - it's DVD, as you mention. However, you're wrong to compare the speed of the drives. A 12X DVD drive, like in the XBox 360, reads 16MB/s. A 2X BluRay drive, like in the PS3, reads data at 72MB/s. So, all things otherwise equal*, the PS3 should load much faster than the XBox 360.
*all things are not otherwise equal
Hey, maybe Rockstar will go back to its DMA Design roots and bring back Lemmings or Uniracers.
Although actually, now that I think about it, I hope that those wouldn't be Sony exclusives, as both of those games would be awesome with a Wii control scheme. A Wii Remote would be great for controlling the Lemmings cursor, or twisting around to perform Uniracer stunts.
Sony passed on exclusive rights to GTA4 in order to strike a deal with a new exclusive IP. No "dirty money" was exchanged; R* genuinely enjoys doing business with Sony.
Except for the fact that Rockstar was originally a PC focused developer and they've been developing games for consoles besides the PS1 and PS2 on and off for years. The Dreamcast got GTA2, the Xbox got GTA3 and VC, the PC got all of the mainstream GTAs, the 360 got Table Tennis and soon GTA4. Rockstar may "seem" loyal to Sony, but thats only because of how the video game market played out last generation. This generation, Rockstar is a wild card. The Wii (might) get Manhunt 2, GTA4 for the 360 is guaranteed and the PSP GTA games did sell but didn't blow people away in sales.
I bet it's Rockstar presents Table Tennis... 2!
Not really sure that is considered a lie. Change in position more than anything...

From what I've read, the ps3's BD drive is slower on seak time due to the data density while it's read time is faster. So on average a Ps3 game loads a bit slower then a 360's due exclusively to a higher seek tiem related to higher data density. Not by a huge margine. More liek 10%-20% range.
The garenteed presence of a HD completely negates this advantage so long as the programmer isn't stupid and caches some data, the pre-caching will negate the speed difference. Although I think your confusing Mbit and MB. Blu ray is 72 Mbit while the x16 DVd is 16 MB. all theoretical.

You and Sony can call it 'change of position', but Sony's version of that is 'No we are not planning to have a price cut' and then announcing it 3 days later, after word leaks to the net of sale papers that already have the price in them, with pictures to prove it. Those papers aren't produced overnight.

I was commenting on the OP's comment "Sony said previously they weren't interested in paying for exclusives...". If you'd like to find someone to argue with about the definition of lying in regards to Sony's price cut, you'll have to look elsewhere. Sorry, we're all out of crazy.
The current PS3 costs $499 and has the EE hardware for PS2 compatibility so it is actually $20 cheaper than 360+PS2 and also has BluRay, Bluetooth, and WiFi included. The more important reason to favor the PS3 is that it will be more likely to still be in production 2 years from now. Look at past performance:
PS1 was in production for 11 years.
PS2 has been in production for 7 years and is still going strong.
PS3 was recently introduced and is now selling strong (after price reduction)
XBox was canned after 4 years of production.
XBox360 is 2 years into production with a 30% defect rate that will cost MS over $1 Billion to fix.
There's no way I'd buy a 360 and hope they'll still be producing and supporting them 2 years from now. MS has been in the console gaming business 6 years and has yet to turn a profit. They probably never will. Past performance may be no guarantee of future results but you'd be stupid to buy a 360 now.
It's pretty much guaranteed that any Sony post, you're going to post a ringing endorsement of Sony, with zero criticism ever on your part. You're one of the four or so slashdot users that I recognize the handle/nick of immediately because of your posting style and history: Every time there's news about Sony you harp on how great the PS3 is, or how much better BluRay is than HD, and your post history also contains you posting negatively to 360 related discussions. Sometimes you say things in an outlandish, flamebait way.
Personally, I don't think you're an astroturfer. Just pointing out why some might think that. It's more your presentation than you liking Sony (oh, but defending the RIAA a while ago was a bad idea -- especially since they're trying to collect royalties for non-RIAA artists through their new internet royalties rules). And note that yes, there are people accused of being astroturfers for other companies. I was accused of being one for Nintendo back before the two systems launched because I was excited about the motion control possibilities. But still, any time I see a Sony post, your handle comes to mind.
Sony's recent statements proves what their attitude towards lying is. There's no need to argue it.
Having lied in the last week, I see no problem thinking they will continue to lie in the forseeable future whenever it suits their fancy.

But I really want a game where I can also rape women and kill fetuses. Blowing away innocent pedestrians with an Uzi just ain't cuttin' it no more.
You're right about the base data rate of Bluray being higher (obviously?), but I believe the 2x bluray drive in the PS3 is something like half as fast at data transfer as the 12x in the 360.
I own a PS3 and I like to play it, but I also don't present a list of games, 70% of which aren't even out, as a reason to get excited.
Then again, I have VF5, Oblivion, MotorStorm, NGS, and Resistance, and I've gotten to the point where I don't even need any more games. Maybe after I finish NGS.
New R* franchises usually aren't too successfull. Which is a pity, because some of them are pretty cool games. Table Tennis, Manhunt and Bully got good reviews, yet they didn't sell too well. As an owner of a PS3, I'm glad to see a new R* game come my way, but I doubt it'll do too much good for the PS3 itself. Hopefully Sony didn't pay that much for it.
Rockstar makes anything good besides GTA? Let's see, there was "Red Dead Revolver" (no), that ping pong game (no), Bully (meh).. Manhunt was decent (hmm). Do they mean a "Rockstar" developed game, or distributed? While "Midnight Club" is pretty popular, I doubt people would be excited about an exclusive racing game. Besides PS3 already has Grand Torismo. Rockstar would have to pull something totally original, away from the sim slasher realm, to make this of any importance.
Rockstar: Games with Violence and Sex, even with Lies that it is not in the game.
Sony: Screwing the consumer with some latent, even blatant incompatabilities (usually discovered too late)
and outright fucking up machines with their trojan and even lying about it.
Sex, Lies and Video games....yeah, match made in...humm...heaven?...hell? Dunno.
Have you read the moderator guidelines? Well, have you, PUNK? (and I want a Karma: Gnarly option)
Reminds me of Nintendo denying a redesigned DS the day before they showed the DS Lite. Companies do this all the time, you don't normally annouce new models/prices in advance, because then no one buys them in the current form or current price.
Are you honestly trying to use Digg as a source? (Seeing as how that was the first link that popped up, and seemingly the only relevent one on the first page of links.)
Why don't you give us an actual source, rather than asking others to do footwork to bolster your (apparently made-up) point?
