Unreal Tournament 3 Beta Demo Now Out
Eurogamer notes that the beta demo for Unreal Tournament 3 is now available over at Fileplanet. "Currently the open beta demo is only available to Windows users, and will give you all a chance to test out a couple of maps and then leave your feedback for Epic Games so it can make a more polished end product - like a shoe."
IT shops are reporting record absences this morning.....
Unix, an obscure operating system developed by bored researchers in an attempt to get a better game playing experience.
I know there is a Linux server that was released yesterday (friend of mine has one running...)

Yeap.. it's been out for several days now.. it's the hyper-paced action.. but it plays well on my lowly 6600GT..
If you run XP64 or Win2k3 64, there is a 64-bit patch you -might- need. You can find it on Epic's site at http://www.epicgames.com/download/UT3Demo-XP64-2K3.zip
That said..
Can I haz SDK now? kthx!

or screw waiting in a queue and Google Search for SetupUT3Demo.exe.
Looks like there's plenty of torrents.
I think that the recent surge of Halo 3 sales shows pretty clearly that CTF and Deathmatch is not getting boring for the majority (yes there are other gametypes but, besides territories, they're always vetoed when I play).

The minimum requirements of UT3 are already impressive, and its great.
True, but they took out Assault in this version of UT! Bastards had to go and remove their best mode! *tantrum*
"16MB (fuck off, MiB fascists)" - The Mighty Buzzard
from what I remember, the new warfare mode is replacing assault... The beta DOES NOT have all of the game modes, so fear not!
Completely agree! I wish the TF2 believed the same. I don't mind the control maps but they should have had more CTF in my opinion and more than just six maps total. Looks like the mappers are already on the ball so that should fill out the lack.
After having spent the last few days playing the Orange Box, I have to admit this was a letdown. From someone who knows nothing about 3D Engine design, UT3 doesn't look like much of an graphical evolution, and apart from some creativity in vehicles the gameplay is pretty iterative. I'll still likely pick this sucker up, but it's relatively low on my list of gaming priorities this holiday season.
I know that port 7777 is used, but there also others too. Anyone know exactly what ports are used by UT3 so I can setup a server behind my router?
Life is not for the lazy.
...were finally starting to heal up from the RSI I've been suffering from too much UT2K3/UT2K4.
I can't install it, I'm getting an Error -112: Out of space after that Ageia driver setup. The target partition has ~5Gb free. Apparently it's trying something stupid with the OS partition which only has a few hundred MB left.

I can already predict the next game the guys at Epic will make, it will be a Quake Wars:ET clone using there Unreal Tournament franchise..
Do you mean UT2004's Onslaught mode or Unreal 2 XMP?

They removed Assault in 2003, too. It was reintroduced in 2004. So expect a UT3.11 for Workgroups next year that includes Assault.

I had to look up the system requirements to see that your sarcasm was set to the "on" position.
The demo will barely run on my roommates very quick 3200+ Athlon system, here are the "official" system reqs:
Minimum System Requirements
- Windows XP SP2 or Windows Vista
- 2.0+ GHZ Single Core Processor
- 512 Mbytes of System RAM
- NVIDIA 6200+ or ATI Radeon 9600+ Video Card
- 8 GB of Free Hard Drive Space
Recommended System Requirements
- 2.4+ GHZ Dual Core Processor
- 1 GBytes of System RAM
- NVIDIA 7800GTX+ or ATI x1300+ Video Card
- 8 GB of Free Hard Drive Space
I went to eat some animal crackers and the box said, "Do not eat if seal is broken." I opened the box and sure enough..
These guys have some pretty fast mirrors up for the UT3 demo:

Can someone help explain to me (and some coworkers who were talking about it this morning) what all the graphical settings. Specifically the relation between screen resolution, screen rendering percentage, and how UE3's post processing works into the equation? We are all pretty interested in what the screen rendering actually means.
Either way, I tried a variety of settings on my pretty old system (9800 pro, 1GB RAM, Athlon 1800+) and I could get a decent framerate but then it looked muddy, or a bad framerate but then it looked pretty good. I wasn't expecting the game to run on my system but it seems to scale decently at least.
Reviewing just the first hour of video games.
and this beta demo has only 3 maps, so keep an eye out on the final extreme ultimate full version of the demo!
I don't know how far your comment is from the truth. They seem to be making two of the major mistakes they made with UT2003. The sniper rifle leaves a trail again and they removed assault.
I was shocked that the demo would even run on at all on my Radeon 9800. With a tweaked UTEngine.ini file I was hovering between 25-30 FPS. Of course by "tweaked" I mean stripping out most of the fancy eye candy. The map selection in the demo is a bit of a let-down, but the movement and nearly all the weapons feel great. Since this is a "beta" demo, I am hoping they will release an updated demo in a few weeks to fix some of the big issues and give everyone a look at what the final product should be like.
I appear to be playing UT2k4 although I never installed that...anyone else have the same problem?
No.
Can't imagine why you'd care when you've got Tux Racer!

I hate to pester a guy offering you a favor (for free, no less) but I was wondering you were still willing to give out those extra Half Life 2 codes. Did you end up getting the Orange Box?

I always go for CTF since it is always fast paced and you can easily go on the attack or dig in and just do some killing as other other side attacks.
I do wish they would bring back the grappling hook, it was always fun to swing over the enemy or hide yourself in some dark corner and fire away.
... But was it just me who was kind of disappointed that there's no real gameplay change from ut2004?
The pretty graphics are very pretty, but somehow I expected the gameplay to change with it, to be more real and cool. Instead I see opponents running and jumping around like cartoon-rabbits, which is very off-putting when the models are these huge, armored guys.
I love the new game engine, love the pretty, pretty graphics, but the wild-zany gameplay which is cloned exactly from ut2k4 is just a complete disappointment.
The demo is to me a classic case of why games aren't solely about graphics.. the gameplay needs to be on-par as well, and to me it isn't, I played this game almost 4 years ago and not sure why I should pay for the exact same game just a lil prettier.
K.
I find that the one thing missing from most games these days is co-operative network play. You should be able to play the single-player game with a few friends, co-operatively.
I like co-op modes, it's relaxing and you can come up with neat ways to get things done. Shit, I mean even Doom had co-op modes and maps where you needed two or more players to do things at once to end the map.
- It's not the Macs I hate. It's Digg users. -
Assault got rolled in with Onslaught to create Warfare. It's really up to the map makers how a level plays out now, which should make maps much more unique :)
Sniper rifle trails I can take or leave. I hated the lightning gun in 2003, but the implementation of the sniper rifle in 2004 was less than spectacular. UT3's feels like a nice compromise: I can pop headshots nicely but the game is going to discourage me from snipe camping. Not that big a deal with a tracer added to the gun.
