4chan Declares War On Snow

With all the recent hacktivism in the news, Anonymous has decided to take on a new and powerful enemy: snow. On Sunday the group announced that it will "do everything in its power to shut snow down by attacking the Weather Channel and North Face websites, boycotting outerwear, and voting for the sun as Time’s 2010 Person Of The Year." I'm sure there are a lot of people in Minneapolis right now that would wish them luck.

    “Hacktivism”. Never heard the word before today and now it’s on every second post.

    I really hope it doesn’t catch on. I cringe every time I hear it. It’s not catchy or clever, just irritating. It’s right up there with “blogosphere” and “*gate”.

    Probably brought to you by the guys who coined the word “cracker” in a desperate attempt to win back the word “hacker” (you lost guys.. give it up.. spouting off “don’t you mean cracker” every time someone uses the word is getting very old).

    Back on topic: I fully support this war on snow. The weather here is _totally_ unacceptable. I’ve said for years that something needs to be done about it.. but my friends and co-workers just kind of laugh and continue to put up with it. Glad to see there are others who feel more direct action is necessary.

      The term "hacktivism" has been around since at least 1999, in the hacker/cracker e-zines.
      I had a CD full of various e-zines, including the whole collection of PHRACK/CDC/LoD at the time, it was certainly on the CD.

      Without Hacktivism we'd never get to experience the joy of Hacktivo. Thats right, now you'll never miss another poorly coordinated DDoS because you're too busy actually accomplishing things. Just set the Hacktivo to record your favorite troublemakers and play back the lulz when YOU'RE ready to watch, on your schedule.

      It's a media buzzword. That's all.

      Just like all the whatevergates out there.

      It's something that sounds cool and edgy, that nobody really understands and those who do don't take the media serious anyway, so it's the perfect vehicle to buzz those that don't know and make those cringe that could point out how wrong the articles are and instead have them jump on how bad the buzzword sounds.

      Cracker was the original term for what people mistakenly call a hacker. The problem is the less computer savvy people saw the word hacker (coined as someone who writes code, as compared to cracker, someone who cracks systems) and thought it sounded cool so they used it in the media. It's not our fault that your still using the wrong word.

      It's on par with using intensive purposes instead of intents and purposes. Completely the wrong word, but fools keep saying it anyway.

      You know, everyone I know likes SGU. But then again, they all disliked SG-1, because it was campy to the point of cheese, but without actually playing to it. It was like... campy, but pretending to be all serious.

      I mean seriously.... I've seen like 5 episodes and there is always some mad super villain wearing a giant metal helmet shaped like some Egyptian hat living in an underground fire lair dungeon, orbiting a planet who is about to explode.

      Sometimes the super villain changes. They always get captured 15 minutes into the episode, and then rescued 42 minutes into the episode and the hero is always ignoring prudent advice and doing something extremely dumb, yet he always gets lucky and nothing happens to him.

      Shit, where is the tension in that?

      No kidding. Stargate Universe is essentially House + BSG. It's just sad how much the Universe writers shamelessly rip off those two shows.

      When they stop screwing around with the "background music montage" (aka House, aka "We don't know how to write a real ending for the episode so we'll just play music instead") and when they stop with the mind-numbing, shaky-cam filled "character-driven episodes" (aka BSG, aka "Writing interesting science fiction is hard, let's write a soap opera instead -- oh and shaky cam is hip and stylish!"), then the show isn't that bad. That said, I cannot believe how bad overall the 2nd season has been -- the subplot of Chloe turning into the alien thing has sucked up at least 15 minutes of every episode and it has contributed almost nothing to the plot since it was first mentioned.

      It just seems like too many shows forget that developing good characters does not mean writing soap opera episodes. You can have interesting science and even some action while developing characters. BSG was very guilty of missing the ball on this one -- halfway through season 3 they should have just renamed the show All My Cylons.

      Back when the term "hacker" was first used to refer to people doing illegal activities as well as legal ones (yes, the meaning is fully agnostic, crackers can be hackers too), "cracker" only referred to a white male living in a trailer park in the southern US. It was later "retroactively defined" because "hacker" was getting a bad rap (from movies like Hackers).

      Your analysis sounds like a pal of mine who hated it because they it was all about them traveling between dimensions, and that is just a remake of Sliders. You apparently missed the very premise of the show, and that likely plays a huge factor in your opinion of it.

      Actually, I always thought "Stargate Universe == Gilligan's Island + Star Trek: Voyager."

      Seriously, all the main tropes originated from Gilligan's Island. Our castaways set sail that day for a three-stargate tour. A three-stargate tour. They get to have weekly guest stars thanks to magic rocks that have them exchanging bodies like the mad scientist episode of Gilligan's Island. They re-invent stuff that the Professor usually made out of split coconuts and bicycle pedals. Col. Young has his naive little buddy Eli and mopes about feeling responsible for stranding them all there.

      Unfortunately, it still uses a lot of Star Trek plotions (reverse the cross-coupling power adapters to move all power to the shields!) and Chloe is no Mary Ann.

      Of course I still watch the damn show. I have to admit that I really like the utterly amoral character of the Professor ... I mean Dr. Rush.

      That's fair. I'm not saying you have to watch it in order to say you don't like it. For example, Jersey Shore really doesn't interest me at all.

      But I'm also not going to come out and say "Every Jersey Shore episode is just strippers in catfights and spiky-haired guys getting thrown out of bars."

      While Stargate is somewhat repetitive, there are plenty of episodes (including some of the best) which don't follow the pattern CookieForYou identified at all. It would be like dismissing Star Trek because of the particle of the week -- sure, technobabble is a weak point, but the show is still worth watching.

      Apparently you have missed the countless times previous to this wikileaks nonsense.

      4chan has been on the news loads of times because of /b/s antics, from bomb threats to child porn, to trolling pedos in to getting arrested, and of course, we can't forget getting cat killers caught. Also attacking Tom Green for fun, along with that Girl Talk thing he done.
      Hal Turner, Habbo, so many more.

      And all their "stuff" quite regularly ends up on things like Digg and Reddit. And since Idle is essentially Slashdots Digg / Reddit version to try and steal traffic from those sites, why wouldn't it get posted? It will certainly get a bunch of hits.

      However it’s also somewhat corrosive and as a result possesses some antiseptic properties, so there’s a good chance it makes it through and is still relatively clean.

      Honestly, I think this was a great move from them. They've been building up quite a bad imagine now that all (even small) news outlets are talking about their attacks. Maybe this will help put them into perspective. I think it's very close that most law enforcement agencies pick these guys up as easy cases against DDOS attack makers, having the public view change from criminals to mischievous youth with a sense of humor can make quite a difference.

      It's the Global Quickening. The unusually high amounts of THC in the atmosphere are causing the Earth-wide time dilation effect. To compound this problem, major producers of THC are in the talks to fully legalize these emissions, which, if left unchecked for a few more decades, will certainly result in a run-away pizza-house effect, whereas the traffic grid will be flooded with pizza delivery trucks rushing to their destinations.

    Snow is great if you like to ski, sled, or partake in other wintertime recreation that require it. It is nice to have (but not too much) in December for that effect it gives with the Christmas decor. But come January and February, it gets to be annoying as it turns to icy and an ugly yellow/brown from thaw cycles. Come March and April, it damn near angers many people since it slows the warming of spring. Many times in the past few years in South Dakota, we have gotten big snowstorms in the last couple weeks of April. That late snow does not stay around long but sometimes accounts for a large portion of the total inches of snow for the whole winter.

Here's a really weird random question: If we had (hypothetically) unlimited energy/power (and I do mean unlimited), could we effectively, cheaply and practically heat all our streets from 0 to say 24 degrees c, or would it be too noisy, costly on parts, or otherwise impractical?

    Specifically, I was either thinking of some giant fan assisted heaters (which are probably too noisy), or more likely, a giant network of underground heaters which continually pump out heat upwards so you feel it above ground. I realise it would have to be a lot of power, but I'm not sure how much (I'm guessing several megawatts for a typical 100 semi-detached house street?). Living in that kind of setting is another tiny step towards a nicer place for all imo.

      If you had hypothetical unlimited labor to maintain and patch all the leaks (assuming a hot water system here...)

      All you "really" need to do is heat it to 1 degree C for fairly obvious reasons.

      You'd have serious animal issues. You'd have snow free roads but they'd be covered in snakes and reptiles.

      If we had unlimited power all the other problems are probably solvable through application of more power (for noise reduction, for instance, some sort of active noise-cancelling system, like a giant pair of Bose headphones). It would be a pain in the ass to maintain, and it would probably cause nasty environmental problems in the colder parts of the world (barring further application of our hypothetical unlimited power source).

      Oh when I said from 0-24, I meant what would otherwise be zero (without any heating), and then having the streets at 24 degrees (i.e. very warm).

      I doubt a water system would be very maintainable, and there could be come limits there. I was thinking of something more solid-state (i.e. giant versions of the "cooker hob rings", but underground.

      As long as heavy traffic, regular wear, thermal cycles don't destroy anything you have buried, like resistive heating wire in the ground for example. Even if power is free it is still quite expensive to bury that stuff.
      Since we are assuming power is free, I think having directed infrared radiant heaters (solid state, of course!) on every lamppost would be cheaper in materials and in labor.
      In my town, cameras are increasingly being used to trigger traffic light changes instead of buried-wire car (metal) detectors, so maybe they are on to something w.r.t. cost-savings. Or maybe the traffic authority is getting kickbacks by camera manufacturers or installers. <tongue in cheek>
      You don't even have to worry about hobo roadkill, because if power is free, some benevolent charities can provide cheaply heated fields to camp in.

      It's not like they have an official PSYOPS division whose job it is to make these things. For all you know, it could have been created by an Anon to be deliberately poor in quality.

      That aside, that's the real beauty and real danger of the group. They're only motivated by what seems to amuse them, but occasionally they've been shown to mobilize towards something they perceive as an injustice - put a video of yourself abusing a cat online and see how long you last before they Sherlock Holmes the high hell out of you and find out where you live.

      They're highly unpredictable, highly random, and hugely difficult to take down as a collective because there isn't a collective per se. It's more like an open forum - someone proposes an idea, and if it's good enough to tickle the fancy of most people who follow the right information sources then it will expand and grow into something both beautiful and horrifying at the same time.

    Anonymous was blamed for taking GENESIMMONS.ORG and subverting that Jew's retail, then the administrator for that domain tried to divert DNS to point at ThePirateBay.

    Website is still down, yet Anonymous or "Inernet Terrorism" was blamed. This gives me the idea, just puting this out there, that Anonymous mind be a legislative Strawman being used to blame on bad sales and bad operation of eCommerce because these domains were allegedly only targeted for a couple days yet they are taken offline indefinitely never to appear again.

    I think Anonymous isn't a 4Chan nomer anymore: with how bad the economy is today, I think it might have become a property-owners thug to help collect Insurance.

    Living in Minneapolis/St. Paul, I have always enjoyed the beginning of this book in which the Northern Suburbs are being eaten by a Glacier. Then there are the microwave satellites keeping Winnipeg clear of Glacier. Driving in Minneapolis this morning and other current events make me think I should think about becoming a cheese-jacker.

    Because it's a completely autonomous collection of individuals, anyone can CLAIM the group says, or will do, something. Until you see something actually happen, don't assume it's anything more than trolling. Operation Payback is an example of how the group will sometimes come together to focus on a goal, but other than that, it's like a fancy party where everyone wears the same costume and mask, and everyone is really, really drunk.
